UPDATED: OMFG . . . Adam Rippon, Tonya Harding and Mirai Nagasu are on the DWTS' all-athlete cast

Forget about home wreckers. What about defending a brother ‘s actions that precipitated your father’s death?

Do you really want to judge a sister and a mother for asking for leniency for a family member who may have had mental problems and needed help and was also probably grieving and dealing with the guilt of his actions? It was obviously a complicated family situation, and though you probably would have sat back and let justice do it’s thing, is it hard to comprehend why someone else would act differently?

Sometimes the best defense isn’t a good offense on somebody else just to deflect attention.

And Tonya and Jeff didn’t have a complicated and volatile relationship? My point is, everyone reacts to a situation based on extraneous circumstance we on the outside can’t know all about.

Can you imagine if a video of Dan Kerrigan’s “assault” aftermath existed and was played ad nauseam on the nightly news? Would opinions then change? And perhaps Nancy’s husband was “separated” before they got together. Or maybe he figured he was sitting on a future endorsement goldmine and made his move. Again, it’s all conjecture and our opinions say a lot more about “us” then all of the parties involved.

Fixed that for you.

I think people need to recognize that concurrent disorders is a complex issue and emotionally charged situations can lead to physically acting out. Nancy's brother had been struggling with his issues for awhile.

I can not even imagine what Nancy and her mom went through with what her brother did and her dad's death. Though imvho, letting her brother off without any punishment is also not right either because he did hurt her dad. I am only on the outside looking in. My opinion is solely based on my experiences with people who are struggling with these issues. Seeing that side, it is so complex and so much bigger than many can even begin to comprehend.

The regret, guilt, shame etc is hard for many to overcome.

Not sure how things are going now but I hope they are doing well...

I have not been this angry since what happened to Ross Minor when his body was called non-sufficient by the FSUSA.

Guys like us know Ross's body is VERY sufficient, right!?

I will boycott all programs on this network and ask my neighbors to do the same and come sit with us and pray in the dark during prime time hours.

I don't think you're taking a strong enough stance here. Plus, how will you watch Roseanne? :p

I swear, y’all 90’s folks and Tonya Harding . This is exactly why ABC did this, not only is she one of the first Ice skaters the everyday U.S. public can think of, the hardcore fans make such a fuzz about anything she does, it seems like her and Rippon were the obvious choices. Y’all post about your outage and how you will not watch but you just continue to play into the hands of ABC. The more :EVILLE: you try to make Tonya, the more you justify ABC’s selection, and come on, it’s like the a$$hole ex boyfriend that the skating world can’t ley go of. You know you will be watching, after all FSU has an affinity for trainwrecks :p

I believe I do have a strong stance in general! I have many years or practicing it every time I use a urinal. The Walmart in Albuquerque still had the trough style urinals like many stadiums have up til 2013, I miss those.

I swear, y’all 90’s folks and Tonta Harding
Is Tonta the same Tonia uses when she dresses for Halloween as the Lone ranger's friend? I can imagine her straddling a horse and riding through a dusty area of the western USA, a bit west of New Mexico where my wife and I live. Maybe the Dancing with Stars will give her a Lone RAnger program and she will be the Man in the couple, but I will never watch it so I will not know unless I hear or read about it from other's!

Not only does Tonya get another 15 minutes, but so do the fans who remain her apologist central and who will never accept anything other than the idea that she was a poor, manipulated angel who was thrown under the bus by truly eville horrible people. Including that horrendous homewrecking beeyotch who defended her murderer brother and worst of all, was ungrateful for an Olympic silver medal and who actually punched out Mickey Mouse in a parade in her honor (really, her hypnotized agent lover altered the video). Oh, the HORROR of it all, the HUMANITY!!!! :drama::wideeyes::wuzrobbed

I know there have been football, baseball, basketball players. Has there ever been a hockey player?

Sean Avery in Season 18. He didn't last long

Sean Avery! Oh man, this guy... I hated him so much (when he played in the NHL), he was a constant pest although actually a pretty talented hockey player. Famous for his "sloppy seconds" comment and for creating a new rule when he screened Marty Brodeur by standing in front of him with the back turned to the play, waving his stick in front of him. It was so weird no rule had been written to give him a penalty. After that playoff series Marty refused to shake his hand since he had trash talked about family stuff on ice. In the interview after he said "Fatso didn't want to shake my hand".

Good times, good times.

ABC would do anything for ratings, but Nancy doesn't strike me as someone who would do anything for money. Surely, she had numerous opportunities during the skating boom to "forgive" Tonya and perform with her in some cheesefest. But she didn't. I can't see her doing it now.

Isn't Nancy already quite well-to do?

OMG, the Mickey dis. How could I forget. She messed with THE MOUSE. Might as well have just burned the United States flag. I shall now forever compare her with Hitler, OJ, Charles Manson, and Pol Pot. Oh, wait that’s the Tonya haters.

I don't think Tonya is an angel, but I don't think she is the devil either. I think she is a very flawed human and the potential for further vilification on this show is very, very high for her. I hope for her own sake that she has thought this through, and that she's grown and matured to the extent that she isn't going to give ABC further rope in which to hang her on.

Here's hoping she wins, apologizes for the 1994 whack and dedicates the trophy to Nancy. If that isn't epic prime time, I don't know what is!?! :D:saint:

Nancy's brother did not get off scot-free. He was acquitted of the manslaughter charge but was convicted of a misdemeanor assault charge (and got the maximum allowed sentence for that).

Nancy went on record as thinking her brother should have not went at all. THAT, I disagree with.I am well aware if what sentence her brother got. My experieces in the field show that many times someone struggling with addiction needs a cataylst to get help and if family continue to enable the problems... why bother seeking it? Her brother did have a physical altercation with her dad.

It’s really messed up that Tonya was involved in an act of violence against her rival. Her ban from figure skating was an appropriate punishment. People are acting like she is part of the Manson family, or OJ 2.0. Many athletes have done far worse and have not become a pop culture mockery the way she has. There are athletes who have committed domestic violence, killed people in DUI’s, subjected animals to cruelty, etc... and they get to go on in life and not have their past affect them. Who cares if she is on DWTS.

This. Thank you.

Tonya has absolutely 100% gone on in her life and not had her past affect her, that is why she’s on DWTS! And until an athlete who’s actually “killed somebody” vs just talked about killing Nancy is cast on DWTS, it’s just nonsense people are spouting about poor poor Tonya and how she has it sooooooo much harder than the rest of us :blah:

Are you talking about Nicole Bobek being on DWTS?

Well, for better or worse, I think it's great that not one, but TWO skaters are on DWTS.

The producers have to think of ratings and, to be sure, there's almost no one in the USA who doesn't know who Tonya is. People will tune in for her. And, for all of Adam's recent celebrity, maybe 10% of the population knows who he is, and most of that is from his post-Olympic appearances on Ellen, Stephen Colbert, etc. Still, that's pretty good.

I love the Shibs and would have enjoyed seeing them on DWTS, but their recognizability is less than Adam's... and almost no one knows Mirai. Not that many people watch the Olympics.

As a non-American I'm clueless & curious about this %. Does anybody here have any idea about the actual percentages or where to look for them?

I tried googling but only found some articled about social media metrics, where Adam was amongst the top performing Olympians. But considering not everybody in USA is active on twitter/IG/FB and not everybody was watching the Olympics (or Colbert/Ellen for that matter), I've no idea how much name recognition he, or other Pyeongchang stars like Chloe Kim & Red Gerard, has among the general population.

Anyway, here are some the articles I came across, in case anybody's interested:

There's this. Q ratings have been around for decades.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_Score
http://www.qscores.com/
Thanks for the links!

So, if I understood right, to calculate the Q score they collect the data about the % of population who have heard about [insert X]. However, the Q score in itself doesn't directly tell that %, because the score factors in whether those who have heard of X have a favorable impression of X or not.

And apparently the data re: the % of population who has heard of X is not available for random FSU posters who are curious about these things because it's a business, and why would they want to give that information away for free?
