Oscars 2016

I'm predicting that after Leo (probably) finally wins this year, Matt Damon will become the 'new' Leo. This is his 3rd acting nomination (previously nominated for Good Will Hunting and Invictus) and 4th overall (win for writing GWH, shared with youngest ever screenwriting winner Ben Affleck). This is Leo's 5th acting nomination and 6th nomination overall (he was also nominated for producing Wolf of Wall Street). Pretty soon people will be saying it's time to give an acting award to Matt. After Leo wins we'll need a new Susan Lucci of the Oscars.

Anyone else you think could be the next never-win at the Oscars?

In Original Song, Diane Warren just received her 8th nomination with no wins to date. The song she wrote with Lady Gaga is considered the front runner though.

Brie Larson is likely to win. Picking up additional nominations for Picture and Director show how much Academy voters respected "Room." Rampling and Ronan are the dark horses. Blanchett and Lawrence stand probably no chance of winning.

I want to see who wins the rest of the circuit before the Oscars. I think Ronan has a shot. Earlier in the year Blanchett was on everyone's lips but that talk seems to have died down. I like the idea of someone "new" who has not won before winning so I want Blanchett and Lawrence to relax and enjoy their night while one of the other three walks away with the statue. I like this category this year.

Yeah...Johnny Depp.

People today are saying it would be hilarious if after the Globes 'snub', Gaga won an oscar before Leo. (To be honest, the 'snub' seems like he was shocked to have his arm bumped into. People make such drama about absolutely nothing these days). Actually, even if they both win an oscar this year, Gaga would win one before him, if only because of the order of the awards.

On behalf of my fellow posters in the Let's Talk Movies thread, we wish to put forward Ralph Fiennes as most robbed of winning an Oscar. :) And for myself, I'd like to suggest Amy Adams. And Glenn Close!!!

Waiting in the wings: Michael Fassbender, Michelle Pfeiffer, Joaquin Phoenix and Michelle Williams. And two that deserve more Oscar nods under their belts than just one: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling.

Jeez, maybe after you receive so many nominations you should automatically be granted an Oscar for sustained excellence before you hit the age for the lifetime achievement award.

Ralph Fiennes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He could literally be given an Oscar for any performance. It would always be deserved.

And Glen Close never won?!?! What?!?!?!?!

I didn't realize that Amy Adams hadn't won an Oscar. She's definitely one I'd say is overdue. I also hope that Michael Fassbender gets more Oscar and critical love.

I would give an Oscar to Fassbender just for existing. :swoon:

Has anyone seen Machbeth? Is it good? I can very well see him as Machbeth but I have difficulties imagining Cotillard as lady Machbeth.

I think Brad Pitt did win an Oscar for "12 Years a Slave," though it wasn't an acting award.

Ok, I didn't remember, he kind of reminds me of Paul Newman career wise. Newman was nominated x number of times and finally won one. It was like he
had to prove that he could act as well as be pretty. ;)

But I totally agree with Ralph Fiennes.

Have you heard the accent of the person he portrayed?

He was Nigerian and I have worked with Nigerians for many many years. There is no way that Will Smith's accent was Nigerian (or even at all African). His accent was really bad. He deserved to be snubbed just for that.

Haven't seen the movie or the interviews, but I'll weigh in anyway :) Accents can be very individual, depending on many factors that only start with where you're from. Where you are educated or first learned a new language is a big one, but people are also influenced by the accents of the people around them - parents, teachers, friends etc. Ever noticed on tv shows how some actors seem to pick up the accents and speech inflections of their co-stars over time? And some people deliberately work at changing their accent. I've also known many people whose accents and ways of speaking change depending on who they are with - for example a childhood friend who sounded like all the other kids in the schoolyard, but when you went to her home, she suddenly had the same distinct Scottish accent as her parents.

Bottomline, I think Will Smith's accent in the movie should be measured against the specific accent of the character he was playing, not against a whole country (or continent!).

What the hell is an "African accent"? Africa is a huge continent last time I checked.

Duh, I realise that, but I have worked for years around people from Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Congo etc and Will Smith's accent was terrible.

Here is my 2 cents
I saw MacBeth - it was very good. Fassbender was good, Cotillard was amazing - to me the best thing in the movie, besides the scenery.
I think I went to see the film with too high expectations.
I have previously seen other MacBeths - Patrick Stewart on Broadway live, and Kenneth Branagh & Alex Kingston in a theatre - film of a live theatre version in a church.
I so loved PStewarts' MacBeth. Fassbender was more subtle in the role than Stewart and Branagh, some of it due to theatre vs film.
I saw Steve Jobs - and thought Fassbender was better in that than MacBeth.

I always thought Liam Neesom should have won for Schindler's List. Plus he does have a particular set of skills. ;)
I agree with so many listed should have more noms and/or wins.

Annette Bening is another one to add.
People to add to the list in the future if they do not win (I can see these folks having very long great careers): Benedict Cumberbatch, Alicia Vikander

Wow, I could have sworn Neeson won for Schindler's List. Ralph Fiennes should have won for Schindler's List too!! Schindler's List had unbelievable acting from the whole cast.

Did Annette Bening not win for American Beauty? She's a great actress and much better than her overrated husband.

I don't remember who won but I do remember that it felt like everytime Annette was nominated Hillary Swank was also nominated. And she has two Oscars. Annette certainly fits the profile for "always a bridesmaid, never a bride."

I think Tom Hanks beat Neesom and Benning lost to Hillary Swank.
I think these 2 bug me since they lost to someone that now has 2 each, I rather have all 4 people have 1 each.

Schindler's List is just a perfectly made movie, well done in all categories. Truly a best picture.

Years ago Tom Cruise blew me away in "Born on the Fourth of July." The guy can truly act. But he is also a "movie star" and we see him in so many "Mission Impossible" type of roles. I wish he would take a more meaty role because I think he is actually a good actor. Until then I'm not sure he'll ever be nominated again.

Schindler's List is a masterpiece and Hank's two Oscars bug me, but not as much as Hillary Swank!!! I absolutely cannot stand her in any film and I think she's a terrible actress.
