This was the worst time for Ava to get injured and lose precious competition experience just a year before the Olympics. She needed a full season on the GP to prove NHK wasn't a fluke and build a resume to make the team and now she's watching the other US ladies not just Amber and Isabeau but Elyce and Sarah and even Bradie come out of the gate on fire and we haven't even seen Alysa and Lindsay yet. Hopefully she can make it to Nationals but i'm not counting on it.

US Nationals (in the women's senior division) is shaping up to be like Russian Nationals used to be...so close that any mistake can sink dreams. In cases like these (where it is so close), the competitors cannot afford to coast through the Grand Prix (or worse bomb) because BOW becomes even more important to the selection committee.

I predict that anyone who has a bad Grand Prix will be out of contention for Worlds.

I do believe that the bright side of eight women having similar scoring potential though is that they push each other to perform better.

I like Ava a lot and was looking forward to seeing her this season. My concern is how does she qualify for 2025 Nationals? She won gold at NHK, w/d from 2024 Nationals and then placed 4th at 4Continents. She has not competed in any summer comps or any National Qualifying Series competitions, doesn't have a bye from 2024 Nationals so how will she qualify for 2025?

That strategy not to compete at 2024 Nationals has not worked out (lesson to everyone).

In what ways do you think she has improved skating-wise ? Nice to see her back doing what she loves, but her skating looks stiff (she doesn't bend her knee on the landings), and overall uninspired, IMO. But I haven't really liked any of the skating that I've seen so far from The Shanghai Trophy event.

U.S. Women National will be interesting if Amber, Levito, Liu and Bradie all skate clean-ish. I give a slight edge to Amber right now to repeat as champion.

She performed two clean, high, wonderful 3-axels...one in combination with the 3-toe loop. Everything else was clean too!

Congratulations to Sophie for winning the junior Grand Prix this weekend. Wow how amazing 🌠🌠🌠

And I was just complaining two days ago why they waited to the very end to send the two skaters with the most technical potential to the very end of the series and I got schooled because their scores weren’t that high back in June or July. If I was making decisions, I still would’ve sent them out first in the series in case they did score high with their technical content so we could try to get them into the final. I do think it’s a shame we have a skater that actually won a gold medal in the junior Grand Prix series and this would be her only one. But then again, I disagree with USFSA on many things lol.

USFSA, you are on blast, you have two weeks to give us a new kiss and cry. Get on it. There has to be at least one gay around. If not, just DM me! All I ask for is meals and an Amber pop up store 😬

To me, it just did not make sense to send Annika and Logan and the others first out. I would still send them out, but I would’ve sent them out towards the end.

Just to put a fine point on how unexpected this gold medal for Sophie was... The USFS still has not posted anything on their IG celebrating it - they had the "gold" graphic and congratulations to Jacob up within 10 minutes of the Men's FS ending yesterday. SCoB has already thrown together a graphic celebrating it, lol.

I am so impressed with the lift, the spring, height and ballon that Sophie, Sarah and Elyce achieve in their jumps! The improvement in jump technique amongst the younger US women amazes me. I have to think that the change to the age limit for senior competition has incentivized coaches to teach better jumping technique.

Sarah and Elyce get so much height (and hang time) in their 3-lutz jumps that I think if they pull in just a bit tighter in the rotation they could both achieve the 4-lutz.

This reminds me of back in the day when Gracie only got the last JPG of the season and naturally she won. She had been killing it all summer long putting up big scores in summer competitions after not making Nationals and was doing multiple 3-3 combos when most of the top Senior ladies in the world weren't doing them at the time. Instead they gave Ashley Cain two events when she should have had only one maybe if they gave Gracie a earlier event and maybe she could have qualified for the JGP final. Granted Sophie hadn't shown anything like this in the summer unlike Gracie so this came out nowhere. But at least Sophie has a chance for one more JGP event Gracie not getting an earlier assignment was inexcusable.

Not likely. I highly doubt the USFS will switch Mia out for Sophie since they've already published the assignments on their website. Also, it's not easy to get visas for China with this short of a turnaround.

As my rather long winded post down below says they did the same to Gracie when she was one of the few women Junior or Senior in the world to do 3-3 combos and the USFSA knew how well she was skating that summer and how high her scores were and they still waited until the last JGP to send her.

That was back when USFSA stupidly assigned JGP spots off nationals alone and Gracie hadn't qualified for nationals that year. IIRC Gracie was basically the first time they deviated from their strategy of basing everything off nationals.

That was a different time (2011) when many assignment decisions were made "behind closed doors" and Nationals results were given priority (Gracie didn't qualify for Junior Nationals that year, as mentioned above; she won the Jr. title one year later). USFS has since changed the way JGP assignments are made and the U.S. Junior Team Cup invitational has been the primary method for the early singles assignments since 2021. von Felten (7th) and Kalin (13th of 20) in Milwaukee have since competed well in NQS competition and it's very likely their NQS results and technical (jumping) abilities were factors in their selection for the final 2 JGPs.
