U.S. Ice Dance 2017/18 season news & updates

I really LOVE the Shibs SD.. The best one of all dancers!!!!!

Their free... well, Ill be glad when Coldplay is over. Looking forward to new material with them.

Hope they medal in individuals and if not them then C&B or H&D

But Im greedy... I still want G&F to have a medal too.......

With the way these games are going for the U.S., I really hope the U.S. brings it in ice dance and skate the way or even better than we expect. They will still only be fighting for bronze, but an individual bronze medal for the U.S. in skating is looking great right now.

I agree. I think it will help the ice dancers to be “under the radar” in their country. It truly is ridiculous that while ice Dance has been the Star(r) discipline in U.S. skating for about a decade they continue to be the red headed step child.

That really was an excellent article and the type of writing/coverage I'd like to see covering figure skating.

Yes, it part was very interesting:

It’s not just the relative ease with which the Olympic hype machine can turn solo virtuosos into icons, or anything as simple as America’s obsession with the individual that makes ice dancing inaccessible relative to singles and even pairs; the sport really is difficult to parse. In singles skating or pairs there are jumps and throws and the familiar suspense of whether a move will hit or not, but the difference between the top ice dance teams is much more subtle. What they’re doing—the footwork, the deep edges, holds done at top speeds—are exceedingly difficult, and that comes through. But they don’t communicate risk the way jumps do; a certain element of danger is missing, and replaced by more subjective elements related to performance quality.

“We don’t make as many mistakes,” Hubbell explained. “So it is hard to, you know, have some breakout performance where all of a sudden, you go from the bottom to the top. Everybody in dance kind of skates, to the outsider’s eyes, like kind of perfect every time.”

It’s the stylistic choices—music, costumes, choreography—more than the intricate movements that the skaters’ feet are doing across the ice that the general audience notices. At this Olympic Games, the Canadian ice dance team of Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the 2010 Olympic champions and the defending Olympic silver medalists, have been the subject of intense scrutiny due to the sensual nature of their free dance, which includes what can only be described as some light face sitting. People are far less interested in discussing their deep, pure edgework; Virtue and Moir might be the best technicians in the competition. But the on-ice passion they exhibited is all anyone can talk about.

By the way, is it a popular website? it has some comments. A few stupid comments too

Great article but I should say it is extremely hard to find a suitable partner - male or female.

And the ones who don't find partners generally don't get much media attention.

Until solo dance becomes an Olympic sport.

Nice article about the three teams growing up together in Michigan

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/...lympics-ice-dancing-pairs-michigan/347779002/
So is it five or six who grew up in Michigan? It's confusing. Anyway, I really didn't know just how well these teams have known each other for so long. That makes their rivalry quite poignant. I hope in years to come when they're all retired they'll still be friends.

And now we know Maia has a sarcastic sense of humor. :D I don't think she lets that out much.

Zach Donohue grew up in Connecticut and started skating there.

So...Papadakis’ wardrobe moment was in that video clip :shuffle: there was enough of the dance to use so that they could have avoided that no?

Didn't know where this question should go, so I decided to use this thread. Does anyone have access to the source that shows the placements assigned to each skater in the Olympic events. I seem to have lost it. The placements in the free dance are very interesting outside of first and second place. Thanks

What do you mean by "placements"?

It shows how each judge by country actually scored a given FD by pair. I have an image but cannot find the original source. It shows that B&S have particularly "curious" placements depending on the judge. B&S had differential placements from 3rd through 9th and this pattern was mimicked by the Turkish as well as Polish judge. I doubt if I should embed it since its source is not properly identified.

I wish there were more videos from the 2006 U.S. Intermediate Nationals as so many that competed would become big names in the U.S. ice dance world. Here's a video of Alex and Maia's winning FD there with some colorful Nancy Kerrigan commentary:

From Sylvia’s post:

“When times are tough, people tend to disappear,” Maia said.

“We’ve experienced it,” Alex said. “When times are tough you don’t get texts back, you don’t hear back from people. But she’ll be hearing back from me for the rest of her life
.”

This quote is so moving. It goes back to what Alex was talking about in his twitter thread after the team event, that sometimes the doubters made their path lonely but that they always had each other, and that’s a big part of the success they have now.

For sure...that is really tacky. I didn't notice it until right at the end when I watched them skate. I am sure there is load's of footage they could have shown.

Haven't watched the video, so no comment on whether they used appropriate footage, but her top broke right at the beginning. It was fall off almost the entire program.

Agreed...but I only noticed anything until the end and the instant replay showed several instances in slow mo...I did not watch the clip above out of respect and I do love this SD so if I want to see it again I will look at their performance at Europeans.
