U.S. Ice Dance 2017/18 season news & updates

Since you saw it it in Regina, how did H/B compare in terms of ice coverage or lobes with the likes of Virtue/Moir, Weaver/Poje, and Hubbell/Donohue?
H/B's FD was superior in those aspects to all three, IMO. I dislike the music -- unfortunately, many of my all-time favorite programs are to music I dislike  -- so I was already predisposed to not like the program, but TV doesn't do it justice at all, and I was gobsmacked by how wonderful this program was live. It was like a CD on steroids.

I thought H/D's FD was the best overall in Regina, because their performance was so freaking amazing, and I love the rhythmic aspect of the program.

Ice dance selection likely to cause controversy

"The Shibutanis are doing the short dance, and there might be a decision on the free dance, but so far I think it was (decided) the Shibutanis would do both," Dubreuil said.

If that holds true, it means that Dubreuil's charges, U.S. champions Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, would be left out in the cold, a decision that could be hotly debated.

They could still be left out if they decide to substitute Chock/Bates in place of the Shibs. It's nice that there's still a shot that one of C/B and H/D can do the TE, but what do others think about the idea of waiting till after the Ice Dance SD portion of the TE and having the USFS look at the points to see whether they should do it? I think it will depend on how confident the USFS feels about Mirai and/or Karen and will look at the points accumulated. Like if some how the U.S. is seriously within striking distance of gold (this is purely theoretically obviously) I really do wonder if they would change their mind about Nathan doing the LP even though the idea of him doing a quad-filled LP with lack of notice is scary though he has been practicing.

The musicality of the sweeping, deep lobes of the step seqs in that FD is exceptional, a really memorable highlight.

I'll have to see the bottom of Madison's dress first, but at this point it seems like an improvement.

@laviemn I have to agree. This one looks rather off-the-rack. The old one was really unique and eye-catching. Then again, I was always worried about the sequins - if they fall on the ice some judges my put in a costume deduction. I've never seen a costume deduction for sequins/rhinestones/feathers falling on the ice - even in a case where a synchro team had literally dozens of feathers fall onto the ice at Nationals right before a team that would go on to have a ton of falls - but I still wouldn't want to risk it.

After last night I expect the Shibs will do both short and long at the team. Adam will do long (Nathan didn't make a case for himself) and the women will spilt as USFSA won't be sure of the "consistency" of either of them.

Are we sure that's actually a new comp dress for Madi H? She does use practice versions that look pretty fancy sometimes. Anyways, it's pretty, but not really latin at all.

I don’t know why Hubbell has such unfortunate costumes. It shouldn’t be hard to dress her; she has a great body.

Chockolate’s dress is an improvement. Reminds me a little of Cohen’s OG malaguena dress.

I didn't love the color or embellishment of Hubbell's dress, but the cut of the dress looked amazingly hot on her. A few guys actually sat down with me and watched their entire SD to gawk at Madi in that dress. This new one? Um, no. I actually prefer the first one her mother made.

I am really picky: The black and bright pink color of Maddie Hubbell's new short dress totally goes beautifully against the purple background, blends right in. Madison Chock's black and red dress sort of clashes with that background. And Evan's chest, gaaaaaa.

Also I was worried all fall that too much of Maddie Hubbell's skin might have been exposed, I think there's a percentage. We can't see the back here, I bet it's fabulous.

Evan's hair  :scream::yikes:Evan's deep V neck  :scream::yikes: He's not an unattractive guy but someone is making him look bad! Also not fond of the bird on Chock's shoulder. Hubbell's dress would be better without the demure neckline.

Madison designs her costumes, so I guess she is the one in charge of his look. I guess he just wants to please her.

I think expecting the skaters to coordinate their costumes with the color of the rink boards is a bit much. It's not as if the color scheme was publicized in advance. That's probably why costume-rink color coordination is not one of the program components.

I think the purple makes the ice look too dark. I preferred the brighter colors in Sochi and Vancouver.

I liked Madi C's green and black dress even with the fabric strips. I thought the coloring suited her and Evan well. Not sure about these colors.

The V neck wouldn’t be bad if he wasn’t so pale on the chest.

Yeah, I think that's what bothers me - after all, most other male ice dancers have a V-neck shirt for the SD this season - some self-tanner or spray, a la DWTS, would improve the look. Otherwise, I think the new colors look fine. They looked great in the previous costumes, but I can't help but think of Wicked when I see black and green together, lol.

Crossposting from the Shibs thread:

Cheering on the Shibs today! Have fun out there, guys. That's what Latin is all about.

Also, for anyone who doesn't read the fan threads and/or want to weed through the slew of pre-Olympic articles, this one is probably the best we've seen about Maia & Alex. I don't think it's been posted here yet, though I've been skimming so may have missed it:

Yay! The Shibs have changed their program music back to what it was at the beginning of the season - no more awkward Fix You section!

Edit: Spoke too soon. Darn it, Tannith! I trusted you

They changed the music. Before it was like the live version with a violin instrumental version done by their friend Jun Curry Ahn, but they decided to use the album version of the song. I think that was a wise decision.

I'm so happy for the Shibs! I've enjoyed their FD all season but last night I felt like it had a little extra sparkle in it. The twizzles were rock solid and I loved the music change too. I actually think they can skate even better so hopefully they take what they learned from the team event and apply it to the individual event. Really great dance event last night! :cheer:
