The Dance Hall, Part 4: To Helsinki & Back -- Seeking Rhumba Magic ...

So how long will it take fans to change the abbreviation from SD to RD in the 2018-2019 season...if the ISU Congress approves the name change.

For me there was never anything to hate about their Free Dance. Maybe because I love the music so much, and I thought they gave it justice. I disliked their SD but at Worlds I tolerated it.

I liked both of their programs this year..Their speed and skating skills also improved...Can't wait to see next yr's programs.

Wow, Weaver & Poje WTT FD!:

Can they skate like this forever?

No! I am so glad that program is done. I love this team, and it is my least favorite of any of their FDs. Love the lift at the beginning. Several positions early in the program. But I really dislike the flat foot lift during the climax of the music. And I cannot like Aranjuez, even from these two. It should be done, done, done. And may someone other than Morozov please choose their music for next season. That said, I'm very happy to see W&P looking happy and strong at this competition. And it was great to see the short performed so well here. I loved it at Cup of China, but I wasn't sure if we would see it reach its potential.

I'm not a fan of W/P's FD either, but I really enjoyed the way the skated the program. Confident and happy with themselves and the program. They really sold it. Hopefully now that they have it done it again, they can carry that mental space into next season.

Weaver & Poje are becoming a serious threat for bronze next year! Morozov has done wonders for them on the technical side. It's really the PCS marks where they're still lagging a bit (need 9.5s instead of 9.2s). All depends on the program next year. As Tanith & Charlie suggested previously, they need a "Je Suis Malade" type dramatic program to catapult them into the medals.

I trust Morozov to work his magic again in Olympic year. ;) Secretly hoping they strategically chose the safe Aranjuez this year so that judges will go WOW when they see their program next year. A dramatic type of FD may give them the PCS edge they need to beat the other bronze medal contenders.

I've been really impressed with Weaver/Poje in these last 2 competitions. They are looking so much better--I'm really surprised!! I feel like there is much more glide, flow, speed, and smoothness to their skating now. The lifts are also smoother and improved. Over the last couple seasons, I felt like a certain stiffness and cautiousness had crept into their skating--a lack of spontaneity and flow and enjoyment. Now all that is coming back. Like @Dobre, I find the Aranjuez program rather dull; but still, they skated it very well at Worlds and WTT. Let's hope they can keep this improved level next season, but with a more interesting FD.

Read the last several pages of the For Russia With Love thread. One derailed thread is enough, I think.
Oh, wow... just read the thread. That's awful, I had no idea that happened but somehow not surprised. Nikita has long had a reputation for having an overdose of ego. Hope Viktoria is okay... emotionally & physically.

Can they skate like this forever? Are they finally back from whatever no-man's land they were in all season? Fingers are crossed!!

Still hate the program and choreography but they skated that miles better than any other time this season. The lifts in particular, which I found very jerky previously, were very smooth and flowed so much better here. The whole program was smoother overall. There hasn't been that much time between Worlds and this event so I wonder if the issue with them lately has more to do with nerves and less to do with peaking. This is just a fun event for the skaters and a chance to make a lot of money but it doesn't carry with it the esteem and pressure of other ISU championships.

W/P looking very smooth and relaxed at WTT! They must feel stoked and positive about their finish at Worlds in Helsinki. With V/M back this season and G/P as inventive and dynamic as ever, it was crucial for W/P not to lose ground with the top teams in the world, much less with their own compatriots. It had to be a tough off-season for them. But they hung in there and continued to fight with everything they've got. Bravo!

And, in other thoughts, I'm so confused by all the love I keep seeing for Weaver/Poje on this board. Am I the only one on here who thinks they are terrible?

Take a chill pill @twizzletoes76. Your thoughts are uncalled for, particularly at this juncture. You must not have eyes to see or an open mind to realize that we are talking about W/P's obviously very well executed fd at WTT, and their commendable fight against the odds this season. No matter what you or anyone think about the program or about W/P's talent overall, please stop with the unnecessary hater attitude. Giving credit where credit is due should not be that hard, even for you.

Not even the most gifted humans or skaters fall out of the womb excelling at everything, eh persnickety naysayers! It takes a lot of dedication and hard work, plus getting up time and again, learning from failure, overcoming the odds, keeping one's eyes on the prize, and above all focusing on self-belief to the point where divine inspiration might help you enter the zone and give you the wings to fly .... if you're lucky. That's figure skating, and it's not about to get any easier for anyone.

Let's hear it for the underdogs and for all those who fight tooth and nail with desire and fire (which includes most but certainly not all skaters these days). Especially so for W/P (and some others this season). :40beers:

BTW, keep the faith Madison and Zachary!!! Continue with the Quiet Assassin-tude Maia and Alex!!! Go with the Dancin' Fever Piper and Paul!!! :kickass:

Probably not. But then, I'm likely not the only one to think this post is terrible.

By the way, how many international ice dance medals did you say you have? I seem to have not a clue how fabulous you are compared to Weaver and Poje.

I mean, I'm sure they are nice people but...

No good knee bend, no natural style, no innate sense of musicality... no deep feeling whatsoever. Everything they do seems very dull/vapid to me.
Everything they do? I rave about them all the time, so I won't ramble on with a re-iteration. Not sure how long you have been watching them but here are 2 of my favourite programs and performances that are anything but dull/vapid, to me at least. If you have seen these, my apologies. :)

G/P: I've always loved the fun and originality they bring to ice dance. There is not another team quite like them, which is a really good thing. But they have always been lacking in the details and basic skating like matching deep edges, lines, and so on. Their SD was a really fun program, but was a little flat on the blade and missing some quality. It hurt them in the scores. But their FD is really the very best program they have ever skated. It was perfect for them. And I was so happy to see them leave the gimmicks and kitsch aside and concentrate on the skating. I feel they were underscored in the FD. To really take their skating to the next level, they need to get a new perspective and spend some time in boot camp, just like W/P have done a number of times, and V/M did since their comeback, to really improve those basic skating skills. If the very best like V/M have to do this, why is this not necessary for G/P? This is clear weakness for them, and the right "boot camp" would help them maybe really fix this. If they can improve these weaknesses, combine with their wonderful creativity, they could be huge threats for the podium. In a world of schmaltz, they would be a breath of fresh air.

You make some good points about G/P.

I wonder if they would benefit from a coaching change? They've been with Carol Lane for a long time. And Paul has been with Lane since he skated with Vanessa Crone. A different coaching team might be able to provide them with some new input and give them the "boot camp" you refer to.

If G/P decide to stay for another Olympic cycle, they should definitely consider some type of different training environment. If they want to move up into the top tier, they should consider going to Montreal and training with Marie-France & Patrice or somewhere else where they can get a different perspective on their skating skills to allow them to get to the next level.

I don't know if it means anything, but James/Cipres posted a photo with their coaching team and Weaver/Poje are there too. Just training or getting choreography? I hope the latter!

I´m just going by memory here so it could be faulty but I thought one of the issues he had with Vanessa is she wanted to try a different coach and he wanted to stay with Lane.

The advantage of Carol Lane, however, is that she barracks so hard for Piper and Paul and (rumour has it) even turned down approaches from other teams to focus on Piper and Paul. They would probably not get that kind of attention from a coach with a packed roster of skaters.
