The Dance Hall 5: Ice Dance Fans 2017-2018

I agree with a lot of the recent comments here. Virtue & Moir ubers (and most of their fans) are pretty disgusting these days. It is a shame as they are such an incredible team, and for the most part pretty good people (especialy Tessa, Scott is a bit of an arrogant douche like Chan but like Chan not rotten to the core or anything) and deserve better fans than they have. The last 6 years have been the worst, thrashing any team who dares to challenge or occasionaly beat their goddess, especialy Davis & White and Papadakis & Cizeron. P&C are all the more comical when they have only beaten V&M a mere 1 time in 5 meetings (and most objective observers believe they should have atleast 2 times out of those 5 in fact, so in fact if anyone was victimized by judging in the rivalry it would have been P&C) and yet V&M have still been going on ad nauseum with conspiracy and martyr theories of how the fix is in for P&C and how poor V&M are so victimized. Atleast D&W were beating V&M often at one point. It reminds me of MK fans, who in her prime were an awful bunch, although post her retirement most of the bad have dissapeared and her fan base is now pretty good with only the odd rotten apple like giselle left, who used to thrash Lipinski and Slutskaya and anyone who dared to challenge or heaven forbid ever beat Kwan relentlessly. It also reminds me of the entitlement and arrogance of T&D fans in their return that one season of reinstated pros, but atleast that blissfully lasted only one season, but with V&M and their ubers it has lasted 6 or more. And I consider myself a V&M fan but some of their ubers the last 6 years have become embarassing, and almost make me feel less excited about their historic win than I otherwise would have been.

I love how you have generalized all fans of V/M to be “disgusting” and then proceeded to write out the rest of your post...people in glass houses should not throw stones. That post by extension you are far from being a model fan sharing your opinions on this board. We have some wonderful V/M fans in that thread...I take offense to having all of us reduced to being tinhatted Uber’s who’s behavior is seen as “disgusting”.

cue to @Ka3sha post on Jr Russian teams to move on the discussion to the next event :p

Well, I usually watch all Russian comps and some small events and also don't have my fav dance team among them all.
S/A have great basics and I was truly impressed at last year Junior Nats with their blues (their synchronization and lines were to die for), but they need better packaging for sure
Shpilevaya/Smirnov are great but he has to heal his injury first and I have a lot of doubts about Zhuck as a coach, her girls usually can't skate and their knees are pretty stiff
Shevchenko/Eremenko (I know, @SmallFairy will :lynch: me), I luuurve their material and their looks, but she can not skate :wall:
Gorshkov's teams (Ushakova/Nekrasov and Kinking with her parter) are just not me "taste" , I don't like their packaging and programs , they're sooo 2000-ies:shuffle:
But, I suggest you to check this team: Khudaberdieva/Nasarov, who were 5th at Junior Nats this year, but were second after the SD. His name is Nikita and he usually katsalapoves his twizzles, so I have some I/K flashbacks from them :fragile:

I'm sorry, this post would be more appropriate in the Dance thread. but I got too carried away :)

I find this post to be disgusting tbh. Have you read stuff that PC fans have said? Talking about VM maybe tampering with the costume, the audience reaction to VM from the arena on TV being "canned", VM winning because of cheating and so on. I would say that that are some crazy conspiracy theories, very sane... There are some crazy, over the top ubers in every fandom, I would say. So to call "most of their fans" disgusting is at least equally disgusting.

Agreed. surely he/she would change his mind of how extreme V/M fans are if she looked through the comment section on any V/M/shibs/H/D/ video on youtube and see a bunch of broken English deranged paragraph after deranged paragraph of mentally unhinged P/C french ubers body shaming, calling everyone who isn't P/C overscored,Calling the females sl*ts and wh0res, threatening to kill people and calling people the N-word. people like Marika fasola, Marie mogeineau, Christian margaric and french fries are prime examples of that. I'm sure if your an ice dance fan of any current popular team besides P/C you know how notorious they are for their repulsive comments directed toward everyone other dance team.

I very much hoped, that after Dance competition it will be possible again to visit dance threads, particularly this one, which is not dedicated to a special team.

It's so exhausting to see all these battles. Most of us dance fans love a lot of teams, sometimes favour one or two or putting one or two in the category "not my cup of tea".

Assuming teams continue next season, what sort of things would you like to see some teams do going forward?

I'll start. No more Coldplay from the Shibs (loved both of their FDs though) and to continue consulting with Renee Roca and maybe have Evgeny Platov or someone similar work on choreography with them (just one program to see how it goes). I'd also like to see more of Massimo Scali's influence in their movement.

I think that they’re finished with Coldplay. I greatly admire their vision for their trilogy. I see is artists why they want to do that

I know they're still in juniors, but I'd like to see Carreira/Ponomarenko with more interesting programs. Tangent: the first time I saw the Shibs was when they were in juniors (2009 JW) and I picked them and Hanyu as future favorites. I will make sure to tell all of you in a few weeks who's going to medal in 2026.

I'd like to see more teams bring in outside choreographers. Also, John Kerr has done some excellent choreo for the pairs, and his own competitive career gives him really good insight about putting together programs that don't rely on romantic/sexual connection. It's fine for some teams to focus on The Sex, but there's more to ice dance than that.

Good idea, I'll continue. Not Dubreuil as P/C choregrapher. As coach yes, as someone who can tweak the choregraphy made by others. Why not Lane's choregraphy ? Haha one can dream.

I want to see Chock/Bates change coach. There is absolutely nothing modern in Shpilband group, except Bourzat's lift. Same old same old, time to change coach. Go to Krylova ?

I'm also curious about Zagorski/Guerreiro. They have some qualities, even if she's better than him and he has a little catch up to make. Better program please ?

I wonder if Penny and Nick will continue - I would have loved to see their original FD this year skated to full potential. I realise that's unlikely to happen though.

Carreira/Ponomarenko are on my radar, particularly Ponomarenko. He's amazing already. I do wonder about how they'll do with Shpilband though. I hope they at least go to some outside choreographers because they have soooooooooo much potential.

I would like them to go to someone else too, but to whom?

I agree with @VIETgrlTerifa that I would like to see Carole Lane choreographing for more teams. She has done an amazing job with Gilles & Poiriers programs, despite their flaws. In fact I would like to see her focus more on that and coaching than her commentary career which I wish would end ASAP as she is utterly atrocious. The one good thing about her in the booth is she is good comic relief, as she is truly that bad. It is strange to see events her teams are at and she is in the booth rather than in the kiss and cry with one of her teams though. At the least there could be someone to replace her for the dance event. I am sure her wonderous insight  in the booth would not be greatly missed.

I'd like to see W/P continue and skate a "bring the sex man-woman" program bring the sex" program as opposed to an "angsty man-woman" program. :grope:

I would love to see them go to Gadbois to train but if not to train then for choreography.

B/S are very upset! They are not happy now. Very bitter actually about all their problems and now nothing to show for it.

They just might do a Savchenko and stay on for two more cycles they could just get that bronze or gold. I mean their federation seems to want that, don't they? Bobrova keeps on hinting that they're just going on a break and they're coming back for 2019/20? So maybe not so bitter as determined. How old was Navka when she won her gold?

She was 30! I mean all soloviev zhulin commentary are all about this was bad or that was bad and they should have done so much better. So there is a great feeling of if only! So maybe determination is right!

I'm sorry I'm totally changing the subject here but is the scoring system changing for next season or not? I didn't see if it was acted... (I'm talking about the GOEs range mostly).

@caseyedwards, do you have any links that speak of Bobrova & Soloviev being upset. I am surprised to hear that. I feel sorry for them if that is the case, they should feel fulfilled and happy skating so well in perhaps their last major event. Maybe a bit miffed that Hubbell & Donohue with major errors still beat them, but that wouldnt have given them the bronze anyway. They do have an Olympic Gold and Silver medal, which is something.
Here is a link of all recent b/s articles that say zhulin upset over missing three worlds! B/s never really had a chance and soloviev upset over his injury. And of Course the meldonoum problem!

https://mrsport.ria.ru/stat/figureskating/person/585692396/585692396/profile.html

It also has the tarasova attacks on their s/d

But article about mishin compliments of b/s

Everything influences, we missed not only the World Cup after the Olympics, but also the next season, we had to get out of the way and make up for everything." The French (Gabriella Papadakis / Guillaume Catherine) were also far away, but now they won the silver of the Olympics, we must cling to everything, but, unfortunately, life develops sometimes so that we have to sacrifice sports and do health, "Solovyov told reporters.

Yes, it is. Here is the link to ISU Communication No. 2019 for rules changes in Ice Dance (it should come up as the first option in Google search)

https://www.google.ca/search?q=ISU+...ome..69i57.19695j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Starting with the season 2018 – 2019 there will be 11 Grades of Execution.

The Sex isn't about sex per se though. It's a sort of a charisma and just because you are a sister/brother team doesn't mean you can't have The Sex. The Duchesnays and the Kerrs had The Sex (even if they lacked a bit in The Skating Skills ;) ).

I totally agree. I thought the Kerrs were smoking hot with their connection to their music and presentation.

Why am I still bugged by H&D losing bronze? I really wanted them to be the next it. And their programs this year really were there for me.

Now we'll see what surprises we'll see next season. Will there be another P&C rise? I can't see any top 15 team that could unless Kustarova pulls something of her hat for Tiff&Jon.

Me too, I liked H&D, where they worked themselves, good programs but they lost bronze 2 times in a row. I wonder how many chances judges give them ... Also, I don't see how can Chock-Bates develop where they are now. For sure, there will be surprises in post-Olympic season, always the most interesting season.

FWIW, Madison Chock mentioned in the post-FD interview that she's been "injured all season." It sounds like it's on-and-off, but it really explains the lack of power from her.

That said, there were issues when she wasn't injured, so it's unclear where they can go from here. But we'll see.
