The Dance Hall 5: Ice Dance Fans 2017-2018

H&D rarely skate clean competitions (SD+FD). I don't the team event would have made any difference.

That's a generalization, based on H/D's problems at Nat'ls one year, at Helsinki Worlds, and now in the final moments of their fd at the Olympics. Winning the bronze was not assured as they were not ahead by many points in the sd. With the Shibs skating first and receiving a very good score, it placed added pressure on H/D. It's inaccurate to say H/D 'rarely' skate clean competitions. That's just as bad and unfair as the negative generalizations often said in petty fashion about the Shibs.

Plus, it's easy for you to say that H/D skating in the team event wouldn't have made any difference for them getting a jump start and working through their nerves. It certainly helped steady the Shibs. We have no way of knowing what would have happened with H/D skating in one of the team event segments. Just as we can only speculate how it made Madi & Zach feel to be left out of the team event altogether. In fact, fans were all in favor of seeing the Shibs skate the team event sd, and Hub/Don the fd. That scenario had been mentioned quite often. It was a difficult choice for USFS because of the constraints placed on the team selection process.

They do need to get the silly mistakes under control. Maybe another coaching change is in order.

I think that's a very silly comment. D/L and their training camp, backed up with all kinds of expert help has revolutionized the ice dance discipline. If not for D/L's creativity and advanced training methods, P/C would not be where they are today and H/D certainly would not have improved to the point where they won U.S. Nats and are contending for World and Olympic podium! In fact, an important reason why V/M solidified their decision to come back is because of what they witnessed D/L and Haguenauer achieve for P/C. Watch the promo feature on P/C where they are dancing in the streets of Montreal, and M-F speaks about them being the best young ice dancers she'd ever worked with, and P/C speak about how much they learned immediately in Montreal.

Haguenauer did not decide to move P/C and his other teams to work with D/L in Montreal for nothing. Watch the French language promo documentary on V/M's process and the reason why they selected Roxanne. It's chock full of insights and details about the great back-up team and amazing organization that D/L have put together for their skaters.

M-F did not allow H/D to feel sorry for themselves after Helsinki. She got them on track right away. It's a very positive, forward thinking training camp, clearly. I detect some sad feelings from P/C, and H/D must be devastated, but I don't think either team will be wallowing in those feelings for very long.

and it is certain that this helped to USA team to get the bronze medal

The Shibs did not single-handedly get the team medal. Their performances were surely important, but it was the Knierims stepping up after Nathan didn't do as well as expected that made a huge difference. Then, it was the Shibs' solid performance in the sd (despite the tech panel), along with Bradie's solid performance that kept Team USA in good stead for the second round. And it was Adam and Mirai stepping up big time in the second round that made a huge difference.

With the singles scoring better than anticipated, the Shibs sealed the deal with not as much pressure on them. And they got the opportunity to rock their latest fd changes. They seemed a bit tight in the team sd, but were seemingly more relaxed in the team fd. Since U.S. fed could only select one ice dance team, they went with the Shibs which reinforced US fed's confidence in them, and likely bolstered the Shibs' slightly shaken confidence as well. It was good practice to get out there and experience the nitpicking from the tech panel. No amount of tech panel nitpicking could throw off the Shibs. It only made them stronger.

Shibs are still the darlings for the USFSA. No doubt that skating in the team event helped the Shibs quite a bit with their nerves and confidence.

Madi and Zach did not skate to their ability and they've haven't gained any ground. They may have to be content with being US champions as their only major boon and perhaps move on to retire.
OK, let's not be overdramatic, their careers are far from over. They're excellent skaters, they just need to shake of these mistakes because they know (and we know) what they're capable of.

I agree about the great school D/L have in Montreal. I wish the German team would train there. However, the team shown in Tessa and Scott's "Roxanne" documentary is the Canadian B2ten team which has nothing to do with Gadbois and is an organization which supports carefully selected Canadian Olympians.

Gadbois and is an organization which supports carefully selected Canadian Olympians.

Since the documentary was in French with no English subtitles (and only English spoken by V/M and a few others with French translation), I would have missed any explanation about B2ten. It almost looked like a full-on management agency backing V/M. So then P/C and H/D aren't getting that same help?

I think it depends on the support from France or the US. B2ten has nothing to do with D/L. I also don't know what kind of support Gadbois offers. B2ten is an organization financed by wealthy Canadians which supports promising athletes with whatever they need, so they can win a medal for Canada. So they don't get money but a service team (nutrisionist, physio, mental coach etc.) depending on the specific need each athlete has. Canadian athletes have to apply to get support from B2ten and only a carefully selected few get in. This article explains the system https://www.theglobeandmail.com/spo...a-better-run-for-their-money/article38013877/ I wish my country offered something like that.
Tessa and Scott talked quite a lot about how much B2ten's support has helped them and that this team could give them the edge.

Teams obviously can't simply decide to train there. It's not easy to be accepted I'm sure.
I know but one can dream, right? ;) I think Kavita and Joti show promise but I don't know if Marina Zoueva can help them move up. Who knows, maybe D/L's style will be out of favor in this next circle and another school takes over.

I said in a post in the WeaPo thread, that when Tessa & Scott came back, I didn't know why everyone was feeling bad for WeaPo because everyone has to fight with the best if you want to win. Plus they were successful. However, when they got named flagbearers, surely I changed my mind and realized it was a bit more than success in skating.
Now I almost feel terrible for the current Canadian Ice Dancers, because how do you follow that without the expectations ? :p "Are they the next Virtue & Moir ? Oops, no". I'm hoping it's not a GB case when no one was able to follow the impact of Torvill&Dean, because Canada is a nation of skating in this case though.

I think Soucisse/Firus are looking very good and might win a national title - something about him too, he is GOOD. I still have no idea about WeaPo and their future though. Man, do I feel for them because they are in the shadow of their teamates more than ever now, and I did not even care before.

About Gilles/Poirier, I simply have NO idea where to put them in the future

That was a really interesting & enlightening article. Thanks!

Might as well do some copy pasting for the TL;DR folks around here...
Virtue and Moir's B2ten funds combine with government money to reach a total Gauthier ballparks in the region of $150,000 to $175,000 a year. (...)

"They've taken our training and our lives to a completely different level. They're just in it for sport, for the people," Moir said this week. "You don't see that in the world as much as we would like to."
At first, this guerrilla sporting outfit rattled some individual sports federations. But after the float-all-boats success of Vancouver, that territorial friction eased. Now Gauthier says that a few federations – Skate Canada, notably – funnel some of their own money through B2ten, trusting that it will be well-spent.

"We're not claiming we're building athletes from scratch," Gauthier said. "We're a conversion organization. Take top athletes, find what's missing and convert that to medals. Because that's what Canada is really bad at."
That's what Finland is also bad at. So yeah, I wish my country had an organization/program like this, too.

So many great skates yesterday...it is exciting to be a fan of ID

But I really hate the short dance portion of the competition. I feel like SD still fails to interest the general public...
I kinda disagree, or well, at least here in Mexico. We had a public live broadcast on Facebook, and it was the SD the one that made people even figure it out (you know, what was ice dance all about vs. pairs) and eventually made them want to come back for the FD :cheer2::biggrinbo. It's like the perfect little condensed version of what makes it different and what is about. Also it was easier to explain the ballroom references as a way to justify it .

It makes sense that the SDs would go well in Mexico this year.

I just find the whole format stale for the most part. There are some exceptions with programs I liked. But enjoy the FD portion so much more.

Not only México, Simpathy for the Devil and Despacito were world trending twitter, and people on twitter saying they would like if other disciplines did the same. I think a lot of people enjoyed it.

Gadbois has at hand on ice and off ice training...and access (referrals) to great dance and acting trainers physio etc but it is paid by the teams of their federations...When B2Ten decides to help specific Cdn. athletes to go the extra mile they are footing the bill...providing whatever they need and have the huge expertise of seeing what they need.

Congrats to the medalists!
Virtue & Moir AND Papadakis & Cizeron were brilliant. If the French didn't have the apparel malfunction, the outcome may have been different.
Shibs Sibs got the bronze because they didn't make a mistake. Hubbell & Donohue had that small mistake that was the difference between the podium and not.
H/D just did not look good at all. Slow and heavy. I think they are lucky with the placement they have got.
