I'm just thinking because of the nature of the state-sponsored doping where a blanket ban was a real option (not just a theoretical one), the process they adopted to allow OAR athletes to be invited to compete was a much more stringent one than simply being clean enough to compete in the past four years. They had to under take all sorts of tests and meet a big list of requirements, and the results had to past more muster than being deemed clean. Some how Bukin fell short.

But Stepanova didn’t?

I'm not saying that this is the case, but I don't think that's implausible. They are a team but they all test individually and are individually responsible for their own compliance of the requirements.

I know that. If he failed a test or some other doping related issue, why are they still competing?

I really don't know. I just think there had to be some sort of failure on his part (whether it was something actually within his control or not) to meet the requirements for OAR athletes to be invited. The requirements may be stupid and beyond what is required for him to continue to compete, but I really don't see this just being an arbitrary decision but one that is by the book and strictly followed with zero tolerance for failure. When that harsh of a stance is adopted, there will be situations that will be seen as unfair.

I can see this going to CAS.

We still don't know about alternates either, so take that with precaution.
(I'll stop with bad news now, sorry)
Zahorski/Guerreiro are now officially named for the Olympic team and they are on the full list of Olympic athletes from Russia, which was published today.
As I already mentioned in the GSD, Pozdniakov was speaking about all disciplines in general. For example , in biathlon only 4 athletes were allowed to compete in Korea, so their federation would have to replaced too many athletes for the weaker ones (and the IOC should have approved those names).

He competed at the Universiade -don't know correct spelling before Sochi which was supposed to be the test event for the sponsored doping program. What was he? 16? Anyways he could have been given a substance without his knowledge although coach must have known which is his father...so that is really sick if that is what happened. If so of course Bukin did not know and his father/coach would deny it. That would totally be awful...ruining your son's love and passion of a sport that he worked to hard to excel, nevermind the harm to his body.
It could have been doping or medication for his injury that season. He was dealing with many substances that season potentially.

Chock/Bates have been ahead in the FD amongst the US teams, so maybe it will be based on that. The Shibs seem a sure bet with the SD.

Seems like the Russians will have no choice but to have Bobrova/Soloviev skate both segments now that Stepanova/Bukin can't attend :wuzrobbed

The justification for this can simply be that they are going with nationals' results. H/D won the event overall with two second place finishes...

The team captain thing has nothing to do with the team event. It's a position the other athletes choose to determine who will be the "leader" of the team. Team captain is symbolic and also shows who the team thinks would be the best person to lead and rally the team and cheer them on, be their representative, or whatever they expect from the team captain.

Being chosen the U.S. team captain (Bates) is not necessarily an automatic entry into the team event. It is more of an honorary title... But, let the politiking begin. :blocjudge :soapbox: :mitchell:

:drama: :drama:

Does anybody know, if on Olympics athlets will be drawed only inside their groups (1-5, 6-10 couples, 11-15) or between two strongest groups (1-10 could be in two the last groups), as was in Sochi?

Thank you!

No, being voted team captain wouldn't place an athlete on the team.

I would think, though, that team members selected an athlete from among a pool of members already named to the team. Could be wrong. He could just be a cheerleader. We've never seen that happen, but the team event has only been held at the Olympics once so that's not much of a track record. Evan is the only athlete from the full U.S. team that is competing in his third Olympics. It's a nice honor regardless.

But, let the politiking begin.

You must be kidding. The politicking has been going on at least all season.

The Russian Olympic comittee officially replace Stepanova/Bukin by Zagorski/Guerreiro on the list of athletes competiting at the Games. Bobrova/Soloviev are competiting as planned.

This list has been approved by the IOC (all the 169 athletes on the list), which means that the chance that S/B compete in Korea is pretty much close to none now. And still no explanation.

Oh boy, so sad for Stepanova/Bukin. S/B looked so good at Euros in both programs. Zahorski/Guerreiro, while sad for their compatriots, must be over the moon to be going to the Olympics.

What is the consensus on judging of ice dance at 4CCs? Quite a few teams getting season's best marks in the SD. Lots of talent, but lots of politicking for that talent too, I'll bet (especially for those skating here who will also be at the Olympics). Very interesting, the jockeying for position of this tier of ice dancers, while the big guns are setting their sights on the Olympics.

I am absolutely in love with Soucisse/Firus, but those were really high scores for them at 4CCs. Bad luck for the Parsons with their unfortunate twizzle mistake again in the SD. The Parsons are certainly better than both Muramoto/Reed and the Chinese team of Wang/Liu. While M/R and W/L show a great deal of improvement and competence, hmmm. I don't think Soucisse/Firus are that much better than McNamara/Carpenter nor the Parsons either. But with the glut of ice dance talent in the U.S., Soucisse/Firus are likely to get their shot of rising up in the senior international ranks sooner than McNamara/Carpenter and the Parsons, and even sooner than Hawayek/Baker too if none of the top 3 U.S. ice dance teams call it a day after Olympics and Worlds.

I say that about the talented S/F because V/M are surely not continuing, and surely Weav/Po will not continue for the entire upcoming quad. Gilles/Poirier may or may not continue for the next full quad, but hopefully they will stick around another two years at least. Skate Canada is obviously happy to see their next generation of ice dancers anointed at this 4CCs golden opportunity for S/F, coming off an exciting showing at Canadian Nationals.

And with a margin of victory of 0.19 over the Shibs and 0.52 over C/B, their Nats win wasn't overwhelming. They won fair and square, but with the 3 teams so close, and with C/B winning the FD, I don't think it would be crazy to choose teams based on individual segment, rather than overall, results.

I suspect, though, that the USFS will be more likely to split men and ladies and use 1 dance team, which I would assume would be the Shibs. But we'll see. I hope they'll give C/B a chance.

The top 5 teams, as determined by the ISU rankings, will skate in the last SD group. Teams 6-10 will skate in the next to last group. So both the Shibs (#6) and C/B (#7) will skate in the next to last group. H/D are ranked 4th so will skate in the last group. The difference between the U.S. teams is less than 50 points...the Shibs and C/B did not compete in any Senior Bs this season, so they 'lost' points relative to other top teams.

With the earthquake of the Bukin news seemingly locked in now, that of course is probably going to affect what happens in the placements at the Olympic.

What are your latest predictions for who gets in the top 10 now?
Top two: P/C and V/M
Bronze contenders: S/S, H/D, W/P, C/B, B/S, C/L (I ranked these where I think they would finish if everyone went mostly clean.)

That’s two spots remaining for top 10. The likeliest in my opinion are G/P and G/F who should finish pretty close to each other scorewise.

The wildcard? Coomes/Buckland. Their Europeans result sure doesn’t look good for them to challenge for top 10, but they did have that amazing Boston Worlds where the SD/FD combo propelled them higher than they had been looking at all season.

If S/B were competing, I think they would have been easily ahead of both G/P and G/F, so one of those two latter teams would have missed out on top 10. Both of them are still scoring significantly better than Z/G.

I think the Bukin removal has made a clearer top 10 with a significant separation from teams ranked 11-15. Of course, there is usually a big mistake or two in the top two flights, so that will determine the final top 10.
