Royalty Thread #16: the best of times, the worst of times

I know. My point was that I didn't understand referring to Sophie as not a royal.
Yeah sorry I quoted you but should have quoted taf2002.. Once you marry a Royal then you are Royal.

Diana’s father though (I had to google this lol): John Spencer was raised in close proximity to the royal family; his godfather was King Edward VIII (also known as the Duke of Windsor), and he attended Eton, and Sandhurst. In 1975, upon the death of his father, Albert Spencer, he became the 8th Earl Spencer. (Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, is now the 9th Earl Spencer.)

Oh yes, there were royal connections, and they were both Earls' daughters and thus had the courtesy title of "Lady" , but they were still commoners. Only actual title holders, (peers) are not. And in some continental countries a peerage title was still not considered good enough to marry royalty. Franz Ferdinand married a Countess, but it was still a morganatic marriage, as she wasn't royal.

I don’t really follow other royalty honestly so you’re more knowledgeable then me.

I am definitely a very common person though in 🇨🇦.

I recall at the time of their wedding that it was noted that Diana was actually more British than Charles, given her family's long history in Britain and that so many of the royal families are intermixed with other countries. I think Kate as well - I believe her ancestry has been traced to prominent figures in the Tudor courts for example.

Fun fact I've surely mentioned in years past - through marriage, I have a third cousin (who I've never met and has no idea he's related to this humble Canadian) who is a fourth cousin of King Charles III. He's one of those Germans whose ancestors lost their titles and claims to royal lineage when the house of Saxe-Cobourg Gotha was converted to the House of Windsor during WWI.

Lady Diana Spencer was a descendant of Hugh Despenser -- supposedly the lover of Edward II, and even if they weren't sexually involved, Edward's support of Despenser would cost him his throne (and, maybe, his life)

That book that Charles Spencer wrote about his time at private boarding school sounds pretty heavy. I may also have to check out his Rabbit Hole Detectives podcast. Thanks for the link.

I think the press was snobby about Kate at first because her parents had actual day jobs. Her mom was a stewardess and later owned Party Pieces. Dad was once a flight dispatcher.

It kind of speaks volumes that Kate's parents working was actually something to be really snobby about. I guess British nobility are expected to just hunt and play polo?

I believe anyone reading my post knew that my "not royal" meant "not royal by birth". Way to nitpick for no reason.

I wasn’t nitpicking you personally but I was confused by your post. Understandably confused.

Huh? If we're only talking about royals "at birth" then we're limited to the Royal family. No Prince Philp, no Diana, no Queen Mum, no Kate, no Meghan, no Sophie, no Fergie ... Weird flex but you do you.

Technically speaking, Philp was royal at birth ... his paternal grandfather was King of Greece (when Greece still had a monarchy)

True. I think he was the closest living relative to Anastasia so when her remains were found they were compared to his DNA.

One of the victims of the New Orleans terror attack has been identified as Edward Pettifer, stepson of Tiggy Pettifer (nee Legg-Bourke), the longtime nanny of Prince William & Prince Harry. The Prince & Princess of Wales issued a brief statement.

Discuss.
Well, obviously, the Greenlanders and Faroese should decide their own fates. Given the geopolitical importance of the former to the U.S. (I think we have a base there), Canada and Russia, I think they would be safer sticking with Denmark and the EU. But it’s up to them.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who live about 90 miles north of the L.A. area, visited the World Central Kitchen in Pasadena, Calif., to help distribute food and supplies to victims of the Eaton Fire on Friday, Jan. 10.
PEOPLE understands that they focused on discreetly supporting wildfire relief efforts, witnessing both harrowing stories and strong community spirit. They donated essential supplies, served meals with World Central Kitchen and connected with affected families and elderly individuals.
Alongside Jennifer Siebel Newsom, California's First Partner, and Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo, they thanked first responders, including L.A. County firefighters and police.
Later, they met with World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés at the food stations to praise relief teams. Through their Archewell Foundation, they’ve also contributed monetary donations and plan to continue supporting recovery and rebuilding efforts with future visits.
In footage published by local news outlet FOX 11, the pair were joined by Andrés and were seen with conversing with Gordo and fellow volunteers.

Meghan is accused all the time of having to constantly be touching Harry, also grabbing every photo op. In the video above she's not touching him & also walked out of the frame for awhile, came back, & then walked out of the frame again. Of course haters are going to find something bad.

I think the settlement says more about what's going on with the Murdoch family than with the Mountbatten-Windsor family. There is a thread about the Murdochs in PI.

I think it was also important that they acknowledged intruding on Princess Diana and the impact of that. They admitted the phone hacks on the royal family. However they said the other intrusions were done by the private investigators (whom they hired and whose information they used).

The royal family has announced the birth of Princess Beatrice's baby daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose. She was born several weeks premature and is quite tiny at 4 lbs., but the announcement says mother and baby are healthy. Trying to find a link that isn't to social media.

If she was due in early spring, that is a pretty premature baby. How is she home already?

She probably was due before early spring (in late winter I’m guessing end of February) but the Royal Family only announces the season to avoid paparazzi.

Otherwise the timelines make so sense as you said.

There were reports at Christmas that she had been warned not to travel by doctors, she was originally going to spend Christmas in Italy with Edo's family but they ended up at Sandringham with the royals instead. It's possible she has had a difficult pregnancy. The delay in announcing the birth (she was born a week ago) might also hint at some complications. All seems to be well now, wishing them the best. I note they have given both of their daughters the middle name Elizabeth, which is interesting (not bad, just unusual). I share a middle name with a cousin (in our case also for a great-grandmother, as I assume Elizabeth here is for her late majesty, who would be great-grandmother to Beatrice's children) but it's a bit unusual for siblings. Of course, William and Kate gave George the middle name Louis and then used it as a first name for their next son. 🤷‍♀️
