Royalty Thread #16: the best of times, the worst of times

I think it would be very difficult to be on the public stage when ill. Close ups, everyone trying to see you and see if they can detect a change, people speculating about this or that, etc etc
It would be bad enough to have cancer but then to be on the public stage with it...........I would not wish that on anyone
Exactly. Even now, many people believe that she was not sick at all. That she just had plastic surgery, that’s why she looks great. And she should be ashamed of deceiving everyone. But many people are also sure that Kate is dying. She has lost a lot of weight, she can barely stand and walk. The Crown should be ashamed of taking advantage of a terminally ill woman. And, of course, we don’t forget those who continue to be sure that this is a double, and we will never see the real Kate again.
I think that for Kate herself all these conversations are unpleasant, but she can ignore them. But she has three children who are already old enough that all this could be hidden from them. For children, their mother’s illness is already stressful, and such conversations make the situation even worse. The fact that they chose privacy is one way to protect children too.

again, it's not Kate or the BRF. It's the author's use of "lesser mortals".

There are treatments that do not cause loss of hair. There are preventative treatments- like colon resection/temporary ostomy, with reattachment procedures done later. There is radio isotope specfic/localized treatments. Or other care.

Having never been a royal or ever will be, I don't know the toil some of those occasions might take.

But again - the author who I assume also does not have insider info - the use of "lesser mortals" did no favors to Kate

Also, remember when royal watchers were faintly scandalized that Diana was a big Elton John fan? Times have changed thank god.

They were? I wasn't a big Diana follower but I don't seem to recall royal watchers being scandalized by Diana's love of pop music.

Yes they didn't want him to sing Candle in the Wind:

That's not the same thing as royal watchers being scandalized by Diana being an Elton John fan in general. That's more a question of whether or not it was an appropriate song for a funeral service in a church.

I met him more than 30 years ago at a LA event for the Holocaust Museum. One of the nicest celebrities ever. Wrote my daughter, who watched Happy Days on Nick at Night, the warmest note. She still has it!
Love hearing this. It’s so disappointing to meet a celebrity you admire and they are rude/not friendly (I’m looking at you, Valerie Bertinelli).

I have Henry’s book on my to-be-read shelf.

The Royals are having a rough year.

The Princess Royal has been admitted to hospital with a minor head injury and concussion thought to be caused by a horse.

Princess Anne, 73, is expected to make a full and swift recovery after an incident at her Gatcombe Park estate in Gloucestershire on Sunday, said Buckingham Palace.

Sources suggest her injury is consistent with an impact from a horse's head or legs.

I never got the appeal of horses. There used to be one here that came to graze in front of our house. God it stank.

I know there are many who disagree with me, but I've always thought it is cruel to breed a horse to race and be a stud for future race horses.

I think stallions love love love to be a stud. Also many horse love to run. I think this because if their riders fall off most horses finish the race. Racehorses live a pampered life before & after their race days.

If they’re not drugged. :( They have even less say in how they’re treated than adolescent figure skaters.
Is it not the usual practice now to drug test the top horses, like the top 1-3 or 4?

Some racehorses live a pampered life after their race days. Many are sent to slaughter. Some end up emaciated and abused.

Not an expert, but didn’t 8 horses die at Churchill Downs last year? I don’t follow the sport because I can’t stand to hear of things like that.

Sorry, if someone has to whip someone/animal to run faster - not kind, not treated respectfully.

It seems that those who are most vocal about animal abuse, support horse racing. Being whipped to run appears to be abuse to me.

These animals are given pampered lives because they excelled at doing something humans wanted/benefited from.
