EPIX is offering a free trial right now through the end of the year (US only, I think) and I've been watching Berlin Station (the CIA in Berlin). I really like it, but I find I like watching each episode better the second time around.

He's not on every season but I am in that group that believes "The Wire" was the very best in television programming. I think it is important to watch it from episode one though so that you understand how this rag-tag group came together. I think the season with the middle school kids (including Jordan) was my favorite.

Getting back to this. Last night we watched the penultimate episode of the middle-school season of The Wire. Certain episodes of this show have kept me awake at night... This was one of them.

Thanks for your reviews. I'd call The Crown "very good" as well. Not nearly as good as I was hoping, but I'd recommend it. Also thanks for the heads up for Good Girls Revolt. I saw it on my Amazon Prime and wanted to check it out but I also didn't want to bother either. It being "decent" is what I expected, so I may pass on it until I have nothing better to watch/read.

I just finished The Crown. I thought one of the most interesting parts was the relationship between the sisters, though apparently it's not that historically accurate. I liked the show, but I definitely preferred Good Girls Revolt. For me, The Crown dragged. It took me several weeks to get through it. OTOH, I ended up binge watching Good Girls Revolt and found it both interesting and entertaining. Try an episode or two and see what you think. I definitely recommend it.

The third season of Mozart in the Jungle came out today. For some reason, I thought it was coming out later this month. I really like this series. I'm going to spend this weekend alternating between Grand Prix Final videos and Mozart. I might go back and watch the first couple of seasons again before watching the third season.

I don't know if this has been discussed here already, but Deutschland 83 is pretty cool. If you like spy stuff and the 80s, this is the show for you.

Alas, it isn't streaming on Netflix, so you will have to get the DVDs. Or you can see if your library has it, like I did. :)
I think it's streaming, somewhere. Yes, I know. Not helpful! :p Maybe Hulu?

ETA I pretty sure it's streaming on Hulu.

ETA2 Yup, it's on Hulu with subscription.

I am really enjoying The 3% on Netflix. It is in Spanish so I have to use subtitles but that means I am forced to pay closer attention.

So I re-watched the whole series Daria on Hulu plus the two movies from other sources, and I didn't realize just how good the last two seasons and the two movies were in comparison to the other seasons. They were all great but from season 4 the show took a serious turn in really fleshing out the characters and developing them. As much as I still love the title character and relate to her, I also love how the show did not shy away from showing the downside and flaws to her snarky sardonic personality where even I ended up finding her to be a drag and way too judgmental at times. Surprisingly, I have to say my favorite character ended up being her sister Quinn. When I watched this show as a teen, I always had a soft spot for Quinn (as is my habit of always trying to find the good in and sympathizing with at times hard to like female characters) but I didn't realize just how well paced her development was in the show until I watched the whole thing in order. I also found Daria's parents to be particularly well-written and developed too with their hearts being in the right place even if they have their own issues and flaws they needed to work out (at times they don't because it's too well entrenched). There were scenes between Helen and Daria towards the end that I was surprised were actually really heart-warming while still keeping in-tone and in-character of the show.

Ahem... Portuguese. :slinkaway I loved it too but my version had dubbing. Has anyone seen Spectral or Medici?

I realized it was Portuguese when I went through the available languages. I certainly didn't mean any offense to it, sounded Spanish-like to me so that is what I went with. I think the point stands. I tried putting the English dubs on but it is too distracting when it doesn't match up with their mouth and for some reason I really enjoy reading subtitles.

A friend recommended The OA and an article said it's mysterious, kind of "Stranger Things" mysterious.

Mom of 15-yo neglected to notice the TV-MA rating <cough> We lasted all of 15 minutes.

We are both decidedly over 15.

Tried to watch the OA based on the stellar reviews. We lasted exactly 17 minutes. Glacial did not begin to describe it. I didn't care how she got there, what happened to her, or why she acted the way she acted. Just. Didn't. Care.

Then again, I am the only person on earth who bailed on Stranger Things because the stereotypical characters were making me crazy, and I don't care about tween's lives in the 80s since I wasn't a tween. So what do I know?:D

You were never a tween? :D

I spent a lot of time in the 80s with people younger than me consuming a lot of pop culture. The 90s were all about being a parent to younger kids and I missed a lot of pop culture at that time so I have a gap there.

Versailles is now on Netflix but (costumes and sets aside) I am not impressed so far. Louis XIV's life was full of TV-worthy incidents/characters, yet the script writers keep throwing those out and putting in all sorts of ridiculous Hollywood-style BS instead. If they they skip or botch the Affair of the Poisons I will be seriously annoyed.

Netflix sent me an e-mail last Thursday with a free month's trial. I had dropped it about a year ago when I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Anyway, I've been reading some of the posts from here. I added The Crown to my list to watch it. I found some other shows that I had added to my list from the last time like Unsealed Alien Files, Unsealed Conspiracy Files, Star Trek: The Next Generation and The Twilight Zone. I also added Fuller House to my list. :)

Good catch!

I'm afraid that "thirtysomething", which on second viewing held up amazingly well IMHO, described my 80s experience. Too young to parent tweens and too old to know them.

But in Stranger Things I actually just couldn't deal with Winona running around like a loon and the "Stand By Me" vibe of the kids. Whatever the decade. I know that makes me a minority.;)

I watched the first episode of The OA last night, and I actually really enjoyed it. Based on that, maybe I should give Stranger Things a try?

I think whether or not I continue to like the OA will depend on where they "go" with the mystery/supernatural element, but I'll definitely give it a try for at least a few more episodes. (And really, it's only 8 episodes. I'll probably end up finishing it no matter what.)

Just finished the series called Trapped on Netflix. It is out of Iceland. Great murder mystery. I haven't looked it up to see if there is some connection with writers but it felt a lot like The Bridge from Denmark.

Also watched a couple of episodes of OA - hmm made me feel like I was working back on the psychiatric unit and every patient would tell me they were the keeper of the ring and pulling everyone into their psychosis.

I loved the OA and I hated it. The beginning kind of dragged and I spent half the time wondering where it was all going(Aliens? God? Psych? Dream?), but as the story progressed, the plot really did start to reveal itself. So many things didn't make a whole lot of sense, but I couldn't stop watching. The side stories involving the kids carried the show IMO. No doubt I'll be tuning in to season 2 if there is one and having the same :wall: reaction watching it.

Without spoiling too much, could you let me know whether one of your above guesses was correct or whether it turned out to be something realistic or something else entirely?

Without spoiling too much, I will say it was NOT something realistic (as in of this world).

As of today Travellers is now available on Netflix. :respec:

I might give it a second try then. I gave up watching it when it ran on Showcase, the excess exposition ticked me off.

I just finished season 1 of The Fosters. It's about a very very blended family -- lesbian mixed-race couple and their multi-ethnic natural, adopted, and foster kids. It definitely has that "ABC Family" vibe to it and borders on soap at times, but it's also well acted, the teens aren't annoying, and generally well done overall. I think there are 3 seasons available.

Oh, and I spotted that the movie About Time is available on Netflix. It's a delightful British film, romcom with a time-travel twist. I'm tired of my usual Christmas films so will watch this tonight instead.

Just a note that the ESPN Tonya and Nancy documentary won't be on Netflix after January 1.

Just finished watching Van Helsing and I really enjoyed it although it does feel like a Walking Dead rip off. It has also been renewed for a 2nd season.
