Anybody seen the British miniseries Doctor Foster on Netflix? I believe it aired on Lifetime as Doctor Foster: A Woman Scorned because Lifetime doesn't believe in not spelling things out in the most ridiculous ways possible, but the miniseries is actually a really excellent showcase in acting. The writing is a bit uneven as some things are great or even powerful while other parts seem unfinished or written just for convenience, but I'd highly recommend it just for Suranne Jones' performance as the title character. I also enjoyed seeing Bertie Carvel as her husband in a more serious role after last seeing him in the musical Matilda.

We're watching Halt & Catch Fire on Netflix (I think it's Netflix) and the 3rd season was just released. I am confused. At the end of season 2, we saw Annoying Husband (Gordon) totally flipping out and being carted off to jail. Then season 3 starts up with absolutely no mention of the incident at all, as if it never happened. Did I miss something?

Saw documentary called Seven Five about former police officer Michael Dowd. He was called the most corrupt cop in NYPD history. The documentary is very chilling. One of his accomplices was interviewed and said something of the effect that Dowd's reputation never bothered him and he was proud of never having ratted on anyone. That's language mobsters use.

I watched "Z: The Beginning of Everything" on Amazon. It's about Zelda Fitzgerald. I'm in the minority, but I didn't care for it. IMO, the characters are not likeable and are not interesting.

Don't know if it's been shared of not but I just finished watching Rita - a Danish series about a feisty school teacher - really well done. I wish there was more of it.

I loved it too. There's a short series about Hjordis, but it wasn't nearly as good.

We also just finished watching it! Great show and wished there was more, too. Hjordis, although very good in Rita, needs Rita as a foil (and vice versa), in my opinion. The Danish language intonations stuck with me for a while after each show, as if I could actually speak the language. Unfortunately, not. We have moved onto the French show Witnesses, a different genre completely, but not bad.

I've been watching Rita as well. I'm in the middle of season 2, but I'm finding myself needing a break from it. Some of the stories aren't really grabbing me as they did in season 1.

Also, I've finished the Julian Fellowes' miniseries Doctor Thorne on Amazon and though it's not very good, I couldn't help but like it. It seemed like a semi-unintentional parody of British costume drama with Fellowes doing a Masterpiece Theatre type introduction and wrap-up after every episode explaining things that do not need to be explained (he must think his viewers or everyone is too stupid to get things) with even broader archetypes and not much development outside someone screaming their feelings (direct and straight to the point) which actually worked a bit because otherwise I felt the show and the storyline could have needlessly dragged on as what happens with these types of soapy costume dramas. Also the two young romantic leads, Harry Richardson and Stefani Martini were seriously a cut above most British tv actors in terms of pure looks and they had chemistry (though I think Martini was underplaying it though I'm sure on purpose as is the time period) if a bit too contemporary looking. Harry Richardson's curly dark hair seriously looks good in a top hat. If their agents were worth anything, I'd really have them go for movies. Richardson looks like a warmer, younger, more approachable version of Aidan Turner from Poldark and Martini looks like an ingenue more classically pretty version of Greta Gerwig.

I saw Witnesses. I liked it. I thought it was a good international murder mystery.

What's Rita about? I like international shows.

I liked Doctor Thorne. I thought it was fun and entertaining. My favorite characters were the heroine's guardian and the American woman. Yeah, I watched it last year and can't remember names. :p

Those were my favorite characters too! I think the actress playing the American heiress took a trope and made her a fully-realized person. I also think Fellowes probably has a soft spot for American heiresses marrying British aristocrats. I wonder how much of her character in the show was in the original Trollop novel.

As for Rita, it's a Danish show about a teacher who is a single mom, dealing with issues in the classroom and outside of it. I don't want to give away too many spoilers.

For those of you who have been watching Please Like Me on NetFlix, it appears Josh Thomas (creator) will not be producing a season 6 (kind of makes sense given what transpired in Season 5 - tough to really go beyond those events).

I have to say that I am ridiculously excited about Netflix this month. They added Father Brown, The Doctor Blake Mysteries, and new episodes of Death in Paradise and Midsomer Murders! This makes up for them removing Rosemary & Thyme (which I wanted to rewatch!). I was having trouble finding something to watch, and I now I have new stuff. :)

Oooh! I forgot about new episodes of Jack Taylor! Yes, April is a very good month for Netflix. :swoon: I watched the first episodes of both Father Brown and Doctor Blake Mysteries, and I love them both. :)

13 Reasons Why.

Just found this on Netflix yesterday. I heard an excerpt from the book it is based on read at a Banned Books Week event I went to back in the Fall of 2015. I always meant to read the whole thing and never got around to it.

Let us know how it is. I read a review of it in The Guardian, they said it's good but extremely dark.

It is. High school girl commits suicide, but before she does, she records a series of tapes, each one directed at an individual who did some sort of damage to her that pushed her towards suicide. Not hard to see why this book was banned, even though suicide as a result of bullying is a reality (but then, IMO people who want to ban books are trying to keep everyone's heads in the sand, including their own). Each episode of the series coincides with a side of one of the tapes, starting with tape #1. It looks like this may be split into 2 seasons, because the episode list ends with tape #7. I am up to Episode #5 at this point.

I don't know when I will get around to reading the book. I still want to, because I have a habit of watching the film first, and then doing a film-to-book comparison (left over from my English course days - my B.A. is in English, with the literature courses far outweighing the writing/grammar courses).

I didnt realize Father Brown was a new show. It feels so dated to me. I had trouble getting into the random episodes that turned up on TV but maybe I'll give it another try on Netflix.

I watched the whole of Vera (so far) on AcornTV and love it. Brenda Blethyn is obviously a national icon at this point, and the writers and camerapeople do her justice. The other actors change a lot. It was a big jolt when her sergeant disappeared without warning at the end of season 2 (I think) -- their relationship was very touching and the writers seem to be struggling with how to make something special, but different, out of his successor. Two female constables also had to be written out of the show. (Maybe Blethyn is as hard to work with as the character she plays?) The older detective with the incomprehensible Scottish (?) accent remains, thankfully, as does the epic and empty (in a beautiful green way) landscape.

I believe it's set in the 1950s, which probably contributes to its dated feel. I like that it's lighter than other shows.

For light detective work, did you ever see Pie in the Sky? It's fun, especially if you like cooking. Possibly only if you like cooking, or gourmet food (or whatever the current term for that is... "gourmet food" sounds so 70s).
