Saw ‘Saving Mr.Banks’ on dvd. I had seen it in the theatre but forgot most of it. I really enjoyed it. Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, Paul Giamatti were all very good. Colin Farrell was good too.

IIRC, there have been movies for which two actors were nominated for the same category.

Heres an article about lead roles specifically:

Every Time Film Costars Were Both Nominated For Leading Role Oscars

https://m.ranker.com/list/movie-costars-nominated-for-same-leading-role-oscar/kevin-jacobsen

Seventeen times, mostly really old movies. Nothing since Thelma and Louise in 1991. Movie studios have since learned that more nominations means more wins which means more money. I wonder if Terms of Endearment was released today if Debra Winger would be moved to supporting actress instead of lead actress.

Just watched the Mamma Mia sequel. I found the first film hot garbage. I think less Meryl Streep made me like the sequel more. Also, I think Lily James is a fantastic actress.

Watched Glass yesterday, what a bad movie that is. Nothing is solvable, the non existant plot dragging on forever, the filming, the editing, the meaningless plot twist and some sub par acting too except for McAvoy who is fun but does an unnecessary amount of characters which brings absolutely nothing to the story imo. Just pure overindulgence on Shyamalan part. I really liked Unbreakable which was very edgy at the time, dark, with a layered story along with solid acting. Split was interesting enough thanks to McAvoy but not as gripping but this is just Shyamalan at his worst. While watching it, it actually made me both angry and sleepy if that's even possible.

Interesting. The first film and any of the live shows are my guilty pleasures. :) I was eagerly looking forward to the sequel but felt it was a disappointment. I think the number of cast members was part of the problem. There were too many to focus on.

On another note, we just watched the awesome Cool Hand Luke (1967) for the first time last night on DVD, and then I noticed this morning that it's one of the movies being shown at Harkins theaters this month as part of their $5 classic movie series. I enjoyed this film immensely, such great performances, especially from Oscar winner George Kennedy, and I think we'll be going next week to see it on the big screen. We may see some of the others as well. Harkins Tuesday night classics

Probably the best thing about Big Stone Gap is the cast: Ashley Judd, Patrick Wilson, Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Krakowski, Anthony LaPaglia and Jenna Elfman. There's a few other people you might recognize as well. The story itself is kind of by-the-book, but it does take on some unexpected turns later on, which were appreciated. The movie is basically about Judd and Wilson's characters and how they've been friends who haven't been able to move past that into a romantic relationship. Probably a movie to watch if you enjoy a big, talented cast. Otherwise you might want to skip it.

I personally never found the first film to be hot garbage, I liked it well enough but I don't particularly care for Meryl Streep, subsequently I also prefer the sequel and I know it's at least partially because Meryl Streep isn't in it as much. I love Lily James so even though I do agree there were too many characters to focus on, I found myself preferring the sequel because of how good Lily James was in it.

Recently I saw a 2-part documentary ‘Hitler’s museum’. Very interesting. It showed how the Nazis had robbed famous paintings, hid them at different places while they bombed Europe, and how the allied forces discovered them.

I saw ‘Aftermath’ this afternoon. Very good. Somewhat predictable but it still kept me interested. Good screenplay, acting, cinematography. Sadly there were just two persons in the theatre, one of them being me. Sad to see good movies being ignored by the audiences.

Tried seeing Hotel Mumbai today but unfortunately there was a fire in a resturant under construction in the mall so we had to evacuate. I waited 30 minutes in the rain before giving up and going home. Guess I will have to try and watch it went it comes on Netflix.

Saw 'The Wife' on TV. I thought the acting was brilliant.

I did have one issue, however:

I found the premise that Joan wrote all of her husband's books for so many years without taking any of the credit a bit unrealistic. The film tried to explain it away when she said 'I'm shy and I don't like people looking at me'. And it's true that it was harder for women to publish in the 50s, when Joan was a student, than it is today. But even so. . .there were women writers at the time, and lots of women writers have been shy and introverted.

Count me as someone who saw Shazam and enjoyed it. I'm seriously considering seeing the Pikachu movie, I'm trying to decide if that is a sad idea or not.

The Legend of Barney Thomson is a weird movie. And the actors have strong accents and the DVD which does not have a subtitles option. And it's a movie that I couldn't take my eyes off of. Robert Carlyle stars in and directs the movie about a man who seems to have a life that has gone all wrong over and over again. He murders a co-worker accidentally. And then he murders ANOTHER co-worker accidentally. Luckily, his Mom (played by Emma Thompson, dramatically aged for the role, but not as dramatic as her accent) has some unusual skill which provide helpful.

This movie is too much to talk about in any greater detail. But if you like dark comedies that are more than a bit wacky, I think you will love this one. :D

We watched an excellent movie last night: the Rider. Such a captivating story, yet a simple one, and a mesmerizing performance especially from the lead. It is a peculiar one though because it is a true story shot with the real people who experienced it, so no actors and yet, it has nothing to do with a documentary or some type of reenactment. It feels like a great indie and quite artistic motion picture. The cinematography is breathtaking at times, those landscapes... one can only get a sense of those amazing old western. The humanity of the characters too, I particularly enjoyed the moving and joyful relationship between the lead and his sister. Frankly, I don't know if Brady Jandreau, the male lead, is interested in acting but with his charisma and capacity to say so much with his facial expressions I say he should give it a try. As for the director, Chloé Zhao, it is only her second movie and I'm definitely gonna checked her first feature Songs my brothers taught me. Her filming greatly reminds me of the Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven, whose movie Mustang is a must-see and has the same intimate yet intense quality with a great love for her inexperienced actors who seems to thrive and shine under whatever type of directing those women are doing. They basically see through them and let them tell the story very organically. Slow burn but always fascinating.

I watched the Kirk Douglas/Vincent Van Gogh movie ‘Lust for life’ last night. It started well but it became torture to watch his suffering, particularly after the ear cutting scene. He was such a tormented soul! I felt quite disturbed after the movie ended. So I started looking for something light to watch from my collection. I picked ‘The cutting edge.’ I didn’t watch it, but just putting the dvd in the player made me feel better. I was able to sleep after that.

Apparently someone has leaked a copy of Endgame online so now there are all kinds of spoilers out there. So I am going to stay away from all things related to the movie until I see it.

I find this to be a really good policy in general... ever since I got spoiled on the ending of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which ruined the movie for me. Still haven't seen it.

Saw Hellboy today. Got a last-minute invite from a friend, who recently had a birthday. So I thought I could pay for his dinner afterwards for his gift. Didn't know much about this movie, so I watched the trailer and it looked decent. :( I had pretty much lost all interest by the second half of the movie. None of the characters were very likeable, and none of them seemed to like one another. So that was a downer and then there's the "world might end" theme as the cherry on top. One to skip.
