I was blown away by Lizzie, a dramatic thriller about the life of Lizzie Borden. Played brilliantly by Chloe Sevigny, who steals the show even amongst an amazing supporting cast which includes Kristen Stewart, Jamey Sheridan, Fiona Shaw, Kim Dickens and Denis O'Hare. The direction and script are also amazing. I don't know how much of the movie is based on fact and how much is fictionalized, but it's captivating either way. A must-see.

Just came back from Captain Marvel and it was really good! Not Marvel’s best but definitely worth the watch. I’d say it is on par with Captain America 1. Brie Larson was great and so was the rest of the cast. 7.5 out of 10

I saw ‘Run the Race’ yesterday. A football/religion movie produced by Tim Tebow who has a cameo at the end. Good story and movie. Not at the Oscar level but likable. Some people were bothered by the religion. & prayer focus. It has very low scores on RT and Imdb, so I was hesitating but some positive reviews encouraged me. There were just three, including me, in a big theatre.

Just watched Boy Erased. I am bummed. Sad, but hopeful at the end. Still. Bummed out. Excellent acting throughout.

I just saw a star is born. And I was loving it. I’ve seen several of the Oscar nominees and this one - for plain pure enjoyment factor - was topping them all. Can’t deny the appeal of the chemistry and star power of the leads. Straight up hollywood. But I have never seen the original (or what I thought was the original as I now realize there are four) because I hate Barbara Streisand movies. So I didn’t know what was coming.

And.....this is exactly why I hate Streisand movies. Because they are ultimately sad stories surrounded by some nice gilding.

Boo. Hiss.

But Bradley was hot as hell.

I finally saw ‘Crazy rich Asians’ on dvd. I am sure it was a lot more fun in a theatre. I wish I had seen it when it was running here. At home I tend to fall asleep and have to watch it again the next day. It is a fun movie.

Two light movies, just for fun:

Tag - What you expect, but also a nice movie about friendship. For me the best part was
the end when the women are included in the game and everyone is running around the hospital playing. It felt relaxed and natural and fun just like how children play. And then we get to see real footage of the men playing the game over the years and that is also great to watch. So watch until the very end!

Goosebumps - very creative and good for all ages. The highlight for me was the performance of the best friend, played by Ryan Lee. He's an amazing comic actor and cracked me up! :D

Just watched Blackkklansman. It was pretty good. I didn't learn a lot and the lead actor lacks charisma. My favourite parts were the Black Student Union gatherings. There was a bit where they were boogying down on Too Late to Turn Back Now. It has such joy, reminiscent of the opening scene of She's Gotta Have It. I think Lee should do a musical.

I saw Woman at War at the theater yesterday, an Icelandic movie mentioned earlier in this thread about a female eco-terrorist and her attacks on the aluminum industry. I loved it. A lot of kooky things going on, but utterly charming.

I saw it last November at the Scottsdale international film festival. I too loved it.

Just got back from seeing the documentary ‘Apollo 11’. It is based on real footage of the first lunar landing. It is very good. It was refreshing to see the real stuff after watching the mushy movie ‘First man’. It was exciting to see the real life astronauts and the huge number of NASA employees and contractors involved in making JFK’s 1961 vision a reality in July 1969. There are clips of JFK’s speech, the astronauts’ conversation with President Nixon, the return to earth, etc.

Didn't want to open a new thread for this, but one of W&M's most famous graduates will be speaking at this year's Commencement ceremonies for the College and receiving a rare honor as well:

ETA: The linked article mentions an honorary degree she received in 1989 - she is first and foremost a 1974 Phi Beta Kappa graduate with a degree in Theatre and Speech (now to be earned in Theatre only, per the College website).

I enjoyed A Royal Affair with Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen. I don't know why they didn't film an English-language version of this at the same time they shot the Danish version as both leads have done English language movies. Then this movie could have reached a much wider audience, which it deserves. No surprise it was nominated for best foreign language film at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. The movie is about how the Queen of Denmark falls in love with the royal physician, who happens to be a radical and wants dramatic changes for his country. He befriends the King and the three of them make pretty much all the changes they want, but those who they kicked out of power have their revenge in the end. This one's a definite must-see.

Another excellent documentary is on the subject is In the Shadow of the Moon from 2007.

Us is on our list but my SO won’t go see a movie during opening weekend. So we saw captive state instead. It was worth seeing just for the ending. But I will say my bf was going to walk out half way through - for holes in the story or something.

I saw Swimming with Men today. It is a British film about a synchronised swimming team. Kind of in the same vein as The Full Monty. Very enjoyable. Stars Rob Bryden and Jane Horrocks.

Hotel Mumbai will be released this weekend. I want to see it but the reviews say it is brutal, so I am not sure it is for me.

I saw a screenshot of Dev Patel for a trailer for Hotel Mumbai and at first I thought it was the third installment of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel franchise.
