The ice rinks in Seoul are closed now. The Metropolitan government shut down all the sports facilities to suppress the second wave. Many elite skaters, including Young You, traveled to Pohang to get ice time. Pohang is an eastern seaport of South Korea and home for 500,000 people and POSCO, a major steel company.

Sunghoon PARK (2020 Korean National Men's 7th) will particpate in I-LAND, a new reality idol project at Mnet:

His figure skating activities will be on hold for the time being.

Sunghoon got selected as a member of the new boy-band at the I-Land final. Congratulations! This is a pretty good news, though this designates the end of his figure skating career.

Korean Ladies may have been excluded from the Grand Prix this season but they are not slacking off because Seoyeon Ji has landed 3A in practice :cheer2:

Also Min-jeong Kwak, 2010 Olympian also appeared on King of Masked Singer (original Mask Singer which FOX bought the rights for).

1st Round

Lion Dance (she wore a Korean traditional Lion Mask so she performed a dance)

2nd Round and Unmasking

She also revealed that she will be marrying Korean professional basketball player Seonggon Moon next year in May. At a complex where there was a basketball court and a rink, Min-jeong hit his car in the parking lot and that's how they met. He went viral a few years ago for this moment during an interview. Best wishes to the happy couple.

Finally, KSU announced the selection creteria for the 4CC, junior worlds, and senior worlds:

(The format of the file is HWP, which is a Korean specific document software.)

Ranking competition - December 2020
Korean National - January 2021

4CC
Determined by the Ranking competition

Senior Worlds
Singles - determined by the Korean National
Pair and Ice dance determined by the Ranking competition
(Yey! It seems they are aware that it will be difficult for Min & Eaton to come to Korea two times in two months, considering mandatory 14 days quanrantine. They do not have to attend the January National.)

Junior Worlds
Determined by the Korean National

One cannot go to both senior worlds and junior worlds in the same season. If eligible, should choose one.

Thanks for the info (the file automatically downloaded for me so don't click on the link unless you want the document).

Can someone translate or summarize the "2020 figure skating national team candidates and youth team player selection announcement" dated 2020-09-25 that was posted on the KSU website? (right now it's the last/6th link in the Figure Skating column)

This notice is about Envelops other than A. KSU was supposed to announce the list last spring, but got delayed for several months due to the pandemic.

In the past, KSU offered seminars and training courses for these skaters, but the notice says Korean Olympic Commitee canceled all the events. :(

For the skaters with ISU bios, I listed their English names.

This is a real senior competition? Like, with Lim, You, Kim, Cha, etc?

KOC canceled 2021 Korean Winter Sports Festival. This competition does not affect entries to the ranking competition or Korean National, which are organized by KSU.

The Winter Sports Festival is an opportunity for college application portfolios, so its cancelation affects young figure skaters by a certain degree.

Feature on YOU Young (includes an embedded Olympic Channel video):

SEO Heewon, the 2020 Korean junior ladies champion who was born in the U.S., is competing at 2021 U.S. Nationals this week and is in 3rd after the Junior SP. I first posted about her in the U.S. Ladies thread here: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...h-adjusted-vision.107389/page-13#post-5908862

An optimistic-sounding article about Korea sending skaters to Worlds (dated Jan. 30):

Machine translation:

With the announcement of the confirmation of the summit of the Figure Skating World Championships, the domestic situation became busy.

The Korea Ice Skating Federation will hold domestic ranking and general championships in the near future to select representative athletes to compete in the world championships.

A federation official said, "This World Figure Skating Championship is an important event that may take the right to qualify for the Olympics."

The Korea Ice Skating Federation was unable to hold an ice rink due to the recent spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) and the closure of the ice rink due to the 2.5 step adjustment of social distancing.

For this reason, the federation gave up participation in the world championships in speed skating and short track.

However, participation in the World Figure Skating Championships is a different story.

This is because Olympic qualifications are not required for speed skating and short track world championships, but each country has Olympic qualifications for the figure skating world championships.

It is not clear what standards the ISU will set new standards at the online committee [ISU Council meeting] on March 3, but first, the players who will compete in the World Championships must be selected.

An official said, "In order to select the national representative, the social distancing stage (in the metropolitan area) must be lowered to two stages."

So, what exactly is the situation in Seoul or other metropolitan areas that have rinks where a ranking and general championship competition can be held? It sounds like the KSU would like to hold one but can they even do so if the social distancing requirements in metropolitan Seoul have all the rinks closed (which is what it sounds like from that last quote)?

The ice rinks are open with limited capacity. However, this does not mean one can hold a competition.

ETD: The metropolitan area is currently in Level 2.5. This should go down to 2 to hold a competition.
