I don't know which I would prefer - I think there are benefits and drawbacks to both. But I don't really get the sentiment some people seem to have (not necessarily people in this thread) that it's crazy to have the team event first. It's not uncommon for team events to happen before the individual medals, is it?
I'm thinking of artistic gymnastic and the equestrian events, for example. Now the major difference is that the team event for those (from what I remember) is combined with the qualifiers for individual finals, not completely separate like in skating. And the scheduling is different. So I'm not saying it's a great comparison. Still though, the individual medals come at the end.
In gymnastics, isn't it normally:
1. Qualifiers (for both the team final and individual finals)
2. Team final
3. Individual all around final
4. Individual event finals
In show jumping in Rio, for example, Eric Lamaze did:
1. Round 1 (only counting for individual)
2. Round 2 (also team event qualifier)
3. Round 3 (team final)
4. Round 4 (individual final round A)
5. Round 5 (individual final round B)
They've changed the format since, I believe.
So obviously having the team event combined with qualifiers for for the individual stuff removes the some of the concern about the team event burning you out for the individual, since yo'd have to do it regardless. And that structure doesn't make sense for figure skating. But still, I never felt that it was weird for the team event to be done first when watching those events over the years.
