I don't know which I would prefer - I think there are benefits and drawbacks to both. But I don't really get the sentiment some people seem to have (not necessarily people in this thread) that it's crazy to have the team event first. It's not uncommon for team events to happen before the individual medals, is it?

I'm thinking of artistic gymnastic and the equestrian events, for example. Now the major difference is that the team event for those (from what I remember) is combined with the qualifiers for individual finals, not completely separate like in skating. And the scheduling is different. So I'm not saying it's a great comparison. Still though, the individual medals come at the end.

In gymnastics, isn't it normally:
1. Qualifiers (for both the team final and individual finals)
2. Team final
3. Individual all around final
4. Individual event finals

In show jumping in Rio, for example, Eric Lamaze did:
1. Round 1 (only counting for individual)
2. Round 2 (also team event qualifier)
3. Round 3 (team final)
4. Round 4 (individual final round A)
5. Round 5 (individual final round B)

They've changed the format since, I believe.

So obviously having the team event combined with qualifiers for for the individual stuff removes the some of the concern about the team event burning you out for the individual, since yo'd have to do it regardless. And that structure doesn't make sense for figure skating. But still, I never felt that it was weird for the team event to be done first when watching those events over the years.

In Track and Field, the relays come later in the event and the same in swimming IIRC

In gymnastics, the team event seems to be the most prestigious along with the All-Around. Gymnasts who win medals in individual events only don't seem to get the same amount of fame unless they are also on a winning team or are in contention for the All-Around too. So, in that case, I think doing the team event first makes sense.

I never said that having the team component 2nd was uncommon, just that having it first wasn't some weird thing to do. Which I said because I sometimes see people acting as though having the team event first is some absurd thing to do.

As for gymnastics, I don't know much about the history, but was the team event always the bigger deal? Because it looks like it has normally been first since at least the 70s (I didn't check further back than that).

It's been a bigger deal as long as I've been paying attention and I started watching the Olympics in the 60s. :D

Gymnastics has been around a long, long time and gone through so many changes it is a bit hard to recognize.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gymnastics_at_the_Summer_Olympics

Based on this table, it appears that the answer at the Olympic level is that the men's individual events + rope climbing - floor + a team horizontal bar + a team parallel bars competition were introduced first. However, you can also see that only an all-around event was held at the following Olympics, and only a team + all around were held at three of the next four Olympics. In the women's event, the team event was introduced first and was the only event competed in women's gymnastics for three Olympiads before the other events were included. So, on the women's side of the sport, yes. The team event was probably always a bigger deal.

I felt like bumping up this thread that was started last year (after the World Standings were updated for the 2020-21 season) and, as it turned out, the only WS ranking points awarded this season were for 2021 Worlds:

How often does the ISU release rankings?
Usually the World and Season Rankings are updated regularly throughout the season (JGP/GP/Challenger Series/Sr. B internationals) but in 2020-21 the only WS ranking points that counted were from 2021 Worlds.

We'll have to wait and see whether or not the ISU decides to remove the skaters' 2018-19 WS points and reduce the 2019-20 WS points to 70%...

The World Standings get updated after every competition in which World Standings points are awarded, and when there is a season change. In most years WS points are awarded for every international competition in which there are at least two members represented in the discipline and the right number of judging and technical panel members with the right credentials and geographic distribution. For the 2020-21 season, WS points were awarded for Worlds only.

Just now, the WS were updated to reflect the points awarded at Worlds, plus 100% of 2019-20 and 70% of 2018-2019. Sometime between now and the first international event of 2021-22, they will (or typcially would) drop all of the points from 2018-19 and factor points from 2019-2020 by 70%.

The Seasons Best rankings get updated after every event that qualifies towards the SB list: Challenger Series (Senior), GP/GPF, JGP/JGPF, championships, Olympics/YOGs, WTT.

In 2020-21, the only ISU SB scores that counted are from 2020 Nebelhorn & Budapest Trophy and 2021 Worlds (plus World Team Trophy if it takes place as scheduled this month).

How is Zagitova rated so high on the list? I thought she wasn't even competing. Or do scores carry over from the last Olympics?

The earliest seasons in the current WS in which results count throughout the 2020-21 season is 2018-2019, so they don't include her Olympic result from 2017-2018.

In the 2018-2019 season, she was the 2019 World Champion, and she won two GP's and Nebelhorn and a silver at GPF, which was worth over 2000 points before the 70% factor. In the 2018-19 season, currently worth 100% of points earned, she won two GP medals and was 6th at GPF.

When WS are reset at the beginning of the 2021-22 season, she'll lose all of the 2018-2019 points, and her 832 points from 2019-20 will be factored by 70%, leaving her with 582 or 583 points, whichever way the rounding rules work.

It's so nice to see Sui/Han as the World #1, I don't think I've ever seen that before. They also previously didn't compete enough to ever make it there.

Thrilled for Yuma jumping to 3rd place! I don’t know why but I have a certain feeling about him & Beijing 2022. Not that I don’t want Nathan to win.

In tennis they freeze 2020 ranking points for current 2021 calculation to maintain merit and fairness to players who couldn’t and wouldn’t compete in 2020 due to cov1d. They normally drop 2019 ranking points but instead they keep them for 2021 at 50%.
