Apparently the U.S. Men hit except for one during TF. I hope they keep building off of this.

I think there were two misses - Mikulak on pommels and Modi on p-bars.

As for the women, I know it's too soon for this kind of talk at the Olympics are two years away, but it seems Simone is definitely a lock for the team so long as she remains healthy. Are there a bunch of juniors coming up by 2022 that will make the WAG team look incredibly different from this one? What are the chances of the other members of this World team being strong contenders for the 2022 team? I know this is a stupid question because we don't know how the juniors will turn out and we don't know if any of the current team members will upgrade by 2022.

Maybe, but injuries make it so hard to predict. The juniors making a lot of noise last year were Maile O'Keefe, Emma Malabuyo, and Gabby Perea. They were all injured this year and none of them competed at nationals. McCallum and Eaker did all right last year but were inconsistent and I don't think anyone would have predicted either of them to be on the world team last year (McCallum was 3rd at Classic and 12th at Nationals, Eaker was 5th at Classic, 3rd at Nationals).

With that giant caveat in mind, the big four juniors this year were Leanne Wong, Sunisa Lee, Jordan Bowers, and Kayla DiCello. If I had to pick one out of this group, I'd go with Lee as she is the one with the highest difficulty, especially since bars is her best event and that's the area the US typically needs to beef up a little bit. But it's totally a crapshoot. If O'Keefe, Malabuyo, or Perea could get healthy, they could also make noise, but I've seen this happen too many times before to get my hopes up too high.

Also, what was up with Hurd's Qualifying Round placement? It was like they were setting McCusker up for the second AA spot and Hurd ended up overperforming. It just seemed a bit odd since Hurd did place second at Nationals and is the reigning World AA champion.

Are you talking about her lineup order? Hurd said she likes going up first, so that could be part of the reason. I also think they might have wanted a strong leadoff.

That's really good to see. Winning titles together is a lot more fun than having unneeded drama, and Simone makes winning team titles a lot easier.

Was watching on BBC2 when they switched, in rotation 5, to the red button to allow coverage of the budget 😡 It was quite an exciting competition till then and the Russians looked very good and I assumed they had gold sewn up. So I was surprised when I seen the results and they had lost by .049. The Chinese had a really strong PBars. Good to see Uchimura back competing.

I was really annoyed with the Americans. I found them very disrespectful to the other competitors. During most routines all I could here was them shouting and roaring, I found it very distracting. Still Mikulak looked good.

Not so sure that Doha was the best venue, a very small audience in attendance.

Liang Chow, who coached Gabby Douglas and Shawn Johnson in his West Des Moines gym, smiles brightly as his gymnasts make their way around the competition floor.

Valeri Liukin, who led daughter Nastia to the Olympic all-around title in 2008, offers corrections after his athletes finish on uneven bars. Mihai Brestyan stands near the vault, watching as he did when Aly Raisman and Alicia Sacramone were sprinting down the runway.

Yet the three longtime staples of the U.S. team will not be with the American women Tuesday as they seek their fourth consecutive title at the world gymnastics championships. Chow is now head coach of the Chinese women’s team. Liukin is working with the Brazilians. Brestyan is Australia’s coach.

I'm actually happy about their moves even if it was spurred due to the dumpster fire known as USAG just because Womens' gymnastics needs to be truly competitive again. I'm all about cheering for the US Team, but I'd like there to be real competition.

When are women's team finals and AA finals? The Doha Worlds website just says "Finals" on their schedule charts. :P

Kara Eaker is a truly beautiful beam worker:

Could she have won BB finals last year with Simone absent? She floats into her leaps and moves with fluidity I usually find missing with American gymnastics as the preferred way of moving under Marta was to just do sharp moves. Simone actually has a semi-fluid quality too on beam as she does body rolls and stuff.

AKA: They have been socialized to each other and worked out the pecking order.

Brestyan made the most healthy gymnasts among him, Chow, and Liukin, but Brestyan had the right instincts to go to Australia to replace Peggy.

I think the US men need more attack. When the US women go out their it looks like they're ready to kill the competition. When the men go out it seems like they're having fun. I think having fun is a great attitude to have, but I think they need to display more of that killer instinct and confidence do things consistently.

I see no problem with their behavior. Maybe it's a cultural thing for you, but in the US it would be seen as a lot more rude if the US men didn't cheer each other on. You are expected to cheer as loud as humanly possible for teammates in most sports. In some sports (like skating) you're even expected to cheer on your competitors, even if you're not supposed to cheer quite as loud.
I would be a lot more concerned if they were putting down other competitors, but they were respectfully clapping for their competitors and even telling them "good job" after good routines.

Adding that the US men mostly come through NCAA where it’s louder than loud at the better meets.

It's nice to see the US men so close to a medal. Also nice to see Sam perform so well on the world stage - hope it continues in the individual competition.

Hope the crowds pick up as the event goes on. It's clear the organizers didn't need $$$ from ticket revenue...

I hope the track worlds and soccer World Cup Qatar will be hosting soon draw better crowds, but I'm not holding my breath.

It was incredible close between China and Russia but today the russians were not perfect, Artur Dalaloyan missed routine on P-Bars was not the key factor for russians to get silver, they also had a rough uncharacteristic pommel horse rotation, scores way below their average and there you go, they left of the table some 2.5 points after Pommel and with the fall by Dalaloyan add another point (plus deductions for execution)

It was Russia title to lose and yes, they lost it. Have they performed the way they did at qualifications they would have beat the chinese by 3-4 points.

It was sad to see the russian guys crushed, but it is understandable, Artur Dalaloyan (who I find very hot) acted like if it was all his blame to take but no, as a team they had mistakes here and there so... They just were like the russian women's team version of the 90's, 2000 that lost many times to a steady Romanian squad.

Add the fact that chinese guy who scored a monster 16.200 on P-Bars, the highest of all the meet thus far and it was enough to overcome the early mistakes they did on Floor Exercise.

Sam Mikulak started with that mistake on Pommel Horse but after that he was very solid, it was like he re-focused himself and did not let the starting mistake affect the rest of the session, that's a new one! He scored on 5 apparatus around the same range he did at qualifications so if (and it's a big IF) he keeps with this consistency an all around medal is a posibility.

But I consider him like the Sasha Cohen of Men's gymnastics so... who knows what game he will bring wednesday

I don't consider the lowd cheering by the americans disrespectfull at all, this has been going for many years and yes they always do for their teammates, as does the other teams of other nations do, maybe not as lowd but they do.

I remember when the women romanian team members cheered and also SCREAMED for their gymnast.

And it's very sad to watch the stands almost empty, also you can see that the attendance is like bring the closest together to gave the sense that there is some crowd but even then you watch that a great amount of those in attendance are gymnasts who have finished their competition (many with accreditation) and or look like family relatives of those competing.

For the audience this seems like the annual Doha World Cup rather than a WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP meet

One correction...the next summer Olympics are actually in 2020, not 2022 (that's the Beijing Winter Olympics), so its not quite as far off as everyone thinks. It will be here before we know it! :cheer:

I'm really proud of the US guys. They could have let that early error mess them up but they kept fighting and encouraging each other the entire time. I loved reading about all the stuck landings! I think they ended up having a really solid meet, especially considering that three of the guys were rookies! :cheer:

Bummer... no live scoring for the women. We have to wait another hour. I’m impatient!

Haha Nastia using her Russian skillz to translate what Mustafina was saying after beam. Mustafina got an overtime penalty, but she told the coach she took the penalty on purpose because it wasn't worth the risk to rush it. Queen.

Man the scores for2-7 are fairly tight. I feel like Russia is pretty good for 2nd, but 3rd will be very interesting.
