Mikulak didn't fall, but he missed a catch with one release and ended up hanging from one hand. Womp.

And Mikulak does it again.... WHYYYY!!!?????

He was almost a lock for the bronze medal, even a silver was a reality, 3rd place going into the final rotation, HIGH BAR his event!! and what happens?? MISTAKE :(

Why Sam, why you always do this????

Another american all-arounder who is going for the big thing coming the final rotation at a world championships aa final and implodes

Sam will finish 5th, with a mistake on one of his strongest event so the outcome of this though painful to swallow is good, just keep your mind together, you almost did it this time and well maybe next year he can finally take an all around medal

Have he not take that mistake and he would have won the bronze.

The other good feedback was his pommel horse that now is scoring well (when hit) so this is something good for Sam too

Xiao Ruoteng and Artur Dalaloyan TIES for the same score but silver goes to the chinese!!!

Difficulty score was the tiebreaker

Wow, after Dalaloyan crushing himself with the silver team behind the chinese by a narrow margin this happens!

and Nikita Nagorni bronze

Oh wow, a tie for 1st place, but Artur Dalaloyan wins over Xiao Ruoteng in the tie break. 2 Russians on the podium, good for them.

Oh, Sam! :(

I thought I was done getting my hopes up for Sam but of course he makes me believe only to falter as usual... :(

I’m so pumped for Artur though!! So well deserved! I really wanted Nikita to medal so I’m glad that he did as well!

He has another four shots at event finals to keep crushing us :(

I hope he can at least win one, I only ask him for ONE

Sam :(

Great final though and wow at a tie at the top.... it's tough enough to lose by fractions of a point, gotta be gut wrenching to lose on a tie!

What’s the tie break procedure again? Is it still eliminating the lowest score? I don’t like that because it punishes someone who was more consistent on all events while allows someone who did worse on one event to win because of a higher score once that score is dropped. For an All-Around, it should be rewarding the person who performed best all-around on all events.

I believe it’s still eliminate the lowest score, which is the stupidest possible tiebreak procedure for an AA competition. If you have to do it that way, eliminate the highest score and then it won’t be the case that whoever made the biggest error gets to strike that from the record. The fairest way would be E scores across all events IMO, which from a quick calculation I think today would’ve still favoured Russia over China (E score would’ve still given the 2012 AA bronze to Aliya over Aly too, the other big example of this weird tiebreak system)

I think they should just allow ties in all-around while doing tiebreakers in event finals. All-around involves so many more components so if you tie at the end, it is really a true tie. I get why they don't want 4-5 people tying for a gold or a bronze on an individual event though (four people tied for the gold on the uneven bars in 2015 I think, and I remember a massive tie for bronze on some event in the distant past that might have involved even more people).

It must be new too because I thought ties were allowed at Worlds and the tie breaker procedure was only implemented at the Olympics because the IOC does not allow ties for judged sports. Maybe after that ridiculous 4-way tie at 2015 Worlds Uneven Bars final, they changed the rules.

Sam’s interview here was sad to watch.

Chin up, dude. You have four event finals - two of which you have a good chance of medalling.

His chances
Floor Exercise: Qualified in 8th; a 3rd place finish at his best, perfect tumbling and no steps needed. But since the two russians are so strong plus Kenzo Shirai, will need some help, maybe a 5th place at best.

Pommel Horse: medal is a long shot, 14.300 is his best score thus far from today's all around, still if he scores like that as do the top 3 contenders he will finish 4th-5th, but he is 2 hit 1 miss on the apparatus. I think nerves will come here specially if he doesn't have a good floor competition that is same day as pommel.

Parallel Bars: a bronze medal potentially, given he scored a 15.4 today at the all around that same score would give him third place behind Zou Jingyuan who can post a monster 16.200 like in the team final or Oleg Verniaiev who carries a 6.700 D score.

High Bar: the one that took away the medal today in the aa is maybe the real option for Samuel to take that elusive world individual medal from a major championship. He will need his usual form and A game, what he usually does on high bar and the Silver is almost a guarantee and if stars align for him and the King Uchimura falters then he could become world champion. BUT if Sam stays loyal to his usual business he can be world champion or 8th place.

So, we will have to endure and wait until Saturday final competition to kwow if Samuel proves us wrong for once.

SAM....WHY does he do this to me ALL the TIME?! Such a great guy but its SO hard to be his fan. :fragile:

Simone great on UB though. Her dismount flew so high. I wonder if she's not feeling great though. She doesn't seem quite as sharp as usual maybe?

...watch her prove me wrong in the next 2 rotations.

Maybe her body is finally catching up since she had kidney stones removed. She's never performed like this before. Can anybody really take advantage though? It seems she's still so far ahead of everyone else.
