Gymnastics News #21 - Tumbling on to Tokyo

So Simone did that insanely difficult new vault and is leading the all around qualifications by almost 5 points with a kidney stone? Are we sure she's human?

There are a lot of reasons why I call her Queen Simone all the time and today is just one of them. I am SOOOO impressed by what she did in this competition. Honestly, I'm in awe! She really is the GOAT of gymnastics and it's not even close. Go take your throne this coming week Simone!! :cheer:

I am also super proud of Morgan Hurd for doing so well and YAY for Grace McCallum to do well on her events too. Bummed that Riley won't make the bars final and had the mistake on beam. Hopefully everything's all right with her. I really need to watch the videos later tonight (I'm currently enjoying Skate Canada on NBC Gold). :cheer2:

So, does anyone here agree with what Dave Lease from TSL posted here during the prelims?

He has issues with Tom Forster seeming so different than Marta or even Valeri? Does he realize that the U.S. women are currently in 1st place - by over twelve points? It’s almost like he think they imploded today.

I do agree with him on his comments about Ragan Smith, though.

TBH if they can train without verbal/sexual/physical abuse and isolation from society on the regular I don't care what place they get. Free from all that and first place by 12 points? Dave's delusional in questioning Tom Forster.

If a couple falls that don't affect the placement is all that happened I'd hardly call it a reason to change anything. It's not like our gymnasts didn't fall or make errors under the Karolyis or Valeri.

Braulio - You have the US women's vault rotation listed for the FX rotation too. Just wanted you to know! Thanks so much for uploading the videos. I've enjoyed watching them tonight! :cheer:

Without Fragapane and Tinkler there this was always a possibility, even with both Downeys there (Ellie still on the comeback from injury) this was a very weakened team that GB was sending.

I cannot believe my eyes for Team Canada. 4th in qualifications in the team, 2 women in the AA final, 5 Event Finals (2 x VT, 2 x BB, 1 x FX). And 4 different members of the team all making it into Event Finals - such depth all around! This has to be their best performance in a World qualifications ever!!!

This has to be their best performance in a World qualifications ever!!!

Yeah, I’d say this was their best qualifying performance ever. Last year was pretty impressive too, with Black qualifying for two finals outright (and getting into a third as the reserve), and Olsen and Moors also qualifying for finals, but Onyshko had misses and I think Moors fell on beam in qualifying.

It’s even more impressive considering the team has been depleted by injuries. Padurariu is limited to beam and bars due to an injury at Elite Canada in February. Many other options for the team weren’t selected and I assume that was due to injury - Rose Woo, Haley de Jong are known to be injured, I assume Jade Chrobok is or I would have thought she could have made the team over Marois and Denommee. Presumably Denommee was injured before podium training, as she was supposed to be competing and Marois was the alternate. I’m not sure if Brittany Rogers retired or is injured. So my expectations for Canada were super low coming into this event after losing so many people and I wasn’t even sure if they could make team finals. (To be fair, they weren’t the only ones in that position...) Glad they proved me wrong.

Very happy for Alexa Moreno, she has been in the world championships vault final before a couple of times but never able to produce a great result at the final, today she qualified in 4th but within real shot of making the podium since her start values are high (both) and her form/execution is better nowadays. Hope she can at least make top 4 in the final.

I think that Canada can make the podium with the 3 up 3 count Team Final, let's wait that all their top gymnast perform solid and consistent just like at qualifying and they have a shot. They can outscore China on Vault and Floor though beam can be the difference, but if China has a meltdown like they did at Rio Olympics (were lucky enough to keep the bronze) the canadians could take that bronze.

Silver is most likely a lock for the russians who are the team most solid and secure after the americans who are just in another level

Was Mustafina always planning not to do vault or is that anything to be concerned about?

She crashed vault a little while ago at her first meet back in Russia and tweaked her knee, don’t think she’s been training it since. But then, she wasn’t supposed to do floor here either and pulled it out as she tends to do.

No words for Simone. She is miraculous.

Heck, if David Price can finally have a successful post season, Sam can. (Not expecting it, however.)

Ugh, gutted for Russia. China had 3 falls that I know of, and the score was so close!

Apparently the U.S. Men hit except for one during TF. I hope they keep building off of this.

As for the women, I know it's too soon for this kind of talk at the Olympics are two years away, but it seems Simone is definitely a lock for the team so long as she remains healthy. Are there a bunch of juniors coming up by 2022 that will make the WAG team look incredibly different from this one? What are the chances of the other members of this World team being strong contenders for the 2022 team? I know this is a stupid question because we don't know how the juniors will turn out and we don't know if any of the current team members will upgrade by 2022.

Also, what was up with Hurd's Qualifying Round placement? It was like they were setting McCusker up for the second AA spot and Hurd ended up overperforming. It just seemed a bit odd since Hurd did place second at Nationals and is the reigning World AA champion.

TF = ?
Vault, Floor, Horizontal Bar, Rings, Parallel Bars, Pommel Horse?
TF team final?

Very happy for the US men. They performed quite well. I’m worried long term as participation rates in boys gym are really dropping. It seems that the kids who enjoy gym are flocking to X sports and diving.

As for Hurd, she’s Ms. Big Meet. The higher the stakes, the better. McCusker probably needs more experience in order to match Hurd.
