I think to earn 3 entries for next year's event, if there is 1 skater, he/she needs to place in top 2.

As a 30 plus year fan of figure skating, to want a skater to hold a move/position for longer than a second isn’t a matter of taste or preference. It’s simply what every skater should strive for. It’s one of the qualities of a complete program. This fine quality doesn’t appear to be important in Tutberidze rink, and therefore, most of their programs are forgettable and borderline unwatchable to me. With exception of Alena Kostornaya.

The problem may be with the scoring system. I too want Alina to hold her positions longer. For example, Ina Bauer like Shuzuka’s or Spiral like Michelle's show maturity, artistry. Alina’s movements look too frantic- being held for a second. In trying to cram as many mo es as possible, the finer points of FS are completely lost. I am not sure what kind of rule changes would fix that tendency, but Yuzuru can hold positions and he scores high points, so I am not sure why the ladiesdont strive for that.

Tuk is an ethnic Udmurt, a Finno-Ugric tribe in Russia. In case you remember Buranovskie Babushki who represented Russia at Eurovision 2012, they sang in Udmurt and wore traditional clothes.

Zagitova is from the same region, but her parents are Volga Tatars.

There is a reason why Mishin and Moskvina still have their rink and workplace after 50 years and their pupils have decent results, and Tarasova hasn't.

Wow! I guess for This Very Reason in 90s Mishin and his students had lighting on their rink in Petersburg? Tarasova says there was no lighting on the Moscow rink where she was supposed to work with Kulik, nobody did ice resurfacing there. It was such a time: breakup of the Soviet Union was a breakup. Tarasova did return to Russia later, but she can friendly explain why most of the coaches didn't return.

Tarasova: Only Lena Vodorezova said to me: "You can come to help me." I said: "I can come to help you. Don't worry, I never will take your athlete from you." A year and a half later we still worked together, we were happy together, but my sister Galya turned sick. After that I couldn't come to the rink every morning and every evening. If she felt unwell, I could miss a training. A coach shouldn't do so.

Tarasova worked with Denis Ten, when he was a small boy, not a champion. Tarasova: He used to say what he would like to do. I also used to bring music for him. I had a feeling, that I worked with an adult person. Not with a kid, but with an adult person.

If she wanted to really coach, and not be a "Start Consultant", she could EASILY gather a new group of younger pupils and would be given space and ice time

What do you know about the reality, Tinami Amori? You know nothing. First of all, Tarasova is not young. She admires Mishin now, because she knows he is not young too.
She is not a victim. Such is life: we manage to do something, we don't manage to do some other things.

Kazakhstan doesn’t need to limit themselves only to those who didn’t compete for a year. Even if someone still have to sit out a season or two, it would be worth it. And Europeans would be more exciting if Russia shared some of their ladies with other countries.

Overall, no they don't need to limit... But they have 3 quotas for next season, and no guarantees they will have the same quotas for the year after, and the year after that.

Yuzu is a great comparison. I wish Alina's team would study his FS. If he can do a 300-pt Lp with a 4T-3A etc etc and still fit in a glorious Shiz-style Ina Bauer there's no reason Alina can't do the same. She has a lovely one and it's frustrating to see her throw it down, so to speak, and not hold it. Every time I see it I hope this will be the time she holds it for a few seconds but nope, she has to move on to the next transition. I wonder if we'll see the ISU crack down on that, as they did with the backloading of jumps this season.

First, i don't think Alina has "glorious" Ina Bauer, like Arakawa, or Sasha, but hers is very good, but not "glorious".

Second, while i love to see Ina Bauer, not just held longer but skated across the rink, end to end, i realize it is not an individually scored element and part of "moves in the field". It can be incorporated into a foot-work, a sequence, or serve as a jump or spin entry. If done well and the position is hit, it is not measured (score wise) in terms of length it is held.

If in a sequence or a footwork one can fit in 4 elements and show higher level, why waist extra fractions of a second on 1 element, and end up instead of 4 elements, with only 2 elements, which affects levels and complexity?

So in "Carmen" she does Bauer and transits immediately into a cantilever, it is a combo move of 2 elements. If she held Bauer, she would not have time for cantilever.. so it would look like "less complexity".

And in POTO she is also not doing Bauer as an individual element, but an entry element into a flying camel.. I also remember in earlier years she used Bauer as an entry move into a jump..

It is an element which does not earn points individually..... why spend time on it more than necessary IF the scoring system does not reward it for duration of time held? When Bauer will be scored on its own, believe you me... Eteri will make the girls do it perfectly. She adjusts to ALL rules and rule changes quite well.

Alina holds its longer in her show programmes. And held it long enough in DQ...

Yagudin wants to make a FS school there probably with full support from the state.. Interesting I remember he didn't want to be coach he wanted to leave the figure skating totally...but he thinks other way now..

Well Kostner never flapped and flailed her limbs and still got high PCS. So quality is awarded.

You just summarised one of the biggest problems with the judging system for me. You ask why spend time on things when the system doesn't reward them. Because figure skating should be more than mathematics. Because figure skating is an art as much as a sport. Because PCS and not only elements, count. Because you skate to music and you should interpret that music instead of using it as background noise. Because holding that Ina Bauer at a specific moment in a programme could be as much of a highlight, or even more so, than a quad. In my humble opinion, Daniil's programmes should be penalised because they are not balanced. They have crazy transitions but they are seriously lacking choreographically and as a result in interpretation and performance. Just look at someone like Miyahara. She has the transitions but her programme also allows her to use the music and actually skate to it! It's doable. My dream is to see Eteri's beautiful skaters like Kostornaia skate with less busy choreography, but I can dream on.

Lisa Tursynbaeva competed for Russia first (in novice I think and I'm not sure if she represented Russia internationally) but then switched to Kazakhstan. Her father is from Kazakhstan. Now she was ahead of two Russian skaters at Worlds.

She got out early enough. At the time she wasn’t among the top Russians of her age, so she wouldn’t have any problems getting released.

that is right. Lukashenko, when making his offer, referred to that as well, and said something like - we're not asking for your top skaters, only the ones in the 2nd rank, they will have a chance to compete, and we'll have better than what we have now.

There is no stigma towards Tursynbaeva and clearly it worked for her. There was no stigma towards Ovcharova or Shelepen, although it didn’t work for them because they got injured and stopped. There is no stigma towards many male pair partners who skate for various countries (e.g. Souza-Kordeiru), although it didn’t work that great for them because they are not that great skaters. And there is no stigma towards Alexandrovskaya and it did work for her, so it is clearly not true that it would work only for Zagitova or Medvedeva.

Tarasova is gorgeous. She looks happier too. It seems like the tension is gone between her and Morozov. They have so much going for them, if they only could put it all together and ATTACK their FS. So frustrating to see them not to be able to fulfill their considerable potential (yet).

well... looks like it is official now in Russia's media. Zagitova will no longer be placed behind Medvedeva in the press, and media will not be forced/instructed not to mention her Olympic title and put her 2nd in events and interviews.

To be fair, they are still relatively young. For example, Duhamel and Radford started getting decent results only much later in their skating careers. So I would say, Tarasova/Morozov still have time, unless they are going to be overtaken by freshly eligible Russian seniors, but that won’t happen the next season yet.
