And I don't mind expressive pair guys! Sikharulidze, Dmitriev, Grinkov, and Trankov all had their own distinct look on the ice. I like when the guy isn't just "a prop in a black shirt and pants". But occasionally for me, Trankov became a little "much" on the ice. OTOH, some of their programs were amazing and I enjoy rewatching them many times.

I also don't mind when the guy has a strong presence but doesn't get in the lady's way (e.g. Fedor Klimov) or when the man and the lady create a nice equal balance (Eric Radford to Meagan Duhamel, Morgan Cipres to Vanessa James, or Cong Han to Wenjing Sui). Bruno Massot, Vladimir Morozov, and Chris Knierim all remind me of huge strong towers holding their tiny girls up in the air, which I also love. I think each pair has their own unique chemistry; they just need to find their groove. There is no bad pair, only bad packaging.
Tell that to the former partners of legends like Sabina Imaikina.

In which programs do you find Trankov is a little "much" on the ice?

Trankov is probably one of the most expressive male pairs skaters in history along with the likes of Anton Sikharulidze, Artur Dmitriev and Sergei Grinkov.
With all due respect, Maxim Trankov and Sergei and Anton do not ever belong in the same sentence, puhlease and thank you.

Maxim Trankov is sloppy and way too over the top. The trump card in that partnership was and is his wife. When he pays attention to her and actually skates with her he begins to be impressive. When he's being his usual self it just comes across as showboating, IMHO. Having Robin with him will be a saving grace for T/M.

There is a reason Tatiana picked Trankov. He was one of the best if not the best male pairs skaters of his era.

He was available and more than adequate but considering that the men of his era with the exception of Sui's Prince are okay, this doesn't make Trankov something special. He was adequate, she is special.

I think he had something to do with that gorgeous twist. I also thought he and Maria were a beautiful pair
And would have at least made a world podium if they stuck it out.

There were a lot of skaters Tatiana could have had success with but same goes for him. I didn’t care for the packaging but I think skills wise Trankov was excellent.

I have difficultly with argument that he was lucky when he was propably the best male pair skater of his generation and he left a top four pair in the world. I think he and Tatiana were well matched.

Just Jesus Christ Superstar - wasn't really a fan of that one. Most of the others were okay. I don't have a problem with V/T in general - they had a beautiful technique - but my favorite Russian pair has always been and will always be Stolbova/Klimov.

I think you are selling him way short. There is something gorgeous about Trankov. Can't put my finger on it, but he's strong and interesting to watch. Whatever it is, he was a perfect setting Volosozhar's diamond.

Trankov bashing continues, I see. Some of these comments are completely out of line (yes, you @Bigbird). Why don’t have have some common decency and respect.

To each their own... I've always rooted for Trankov. He stood out with his theatrical talent, and I agree with posters saying that he made Volosozhar shine, doubly so as he provided drama to her potentially cool perfection. They were matched perfectly. I also like him as a human being (from little that I know)- thoughtful, volatile, sometimes not objective... a bit of TAT persona there, so I wish him TAT accomplishments as a coach.

V/T were skating to that Bollywood program one year, and I'm not even sure I really liked its construction or anything, but IMO it was so great to watch because he was selling it. IMO when he's on, he's got this joy and confidence in moving and performing. Which is cool to see. And agree that it's well suited to Volosozhar, since she's rather closed off in her performance persona. They complement each other well and create chemistry that way. I mean, for some "stoic" works, it would be obviously inauthentic for Trankov. I wish they had gotten better programs in general throughout their career. Every time they had good material, like the 2014 SP, they really delivered.

Agree!

Traditional, uninspiring choreography happened to Sotskova. I liked her material way better with her previous coach, much more interesting. To me right now she's just meh.
I don’t think Sotskova’s problem has been her choreography. There are skaters like Radionova who would manage to make Sotskova’s programs much more inspiring. I think Sotskova’s problems are that she concentrates too much on the technical side and hasn’t learned to project out to the audience. When someone is projecting, their brain doesn’t concentrate as much on the technique, and it may be that Sotskova thought that it is not worth the risk, or it may be that her past coach never made her do that. I used to think that projecting comes (or doesn’t come) naturally, depending whether someone has introverted or outgoing personality, but then I learned that it is a part of the choreography. A good coach or choreographer tells the skaters where to do even the tiniest moves with head, where to look (into audience), even where to smile. My coach used to scream at me when she couldn’t see my teeth accross the rink (when the program required smiling) and initially after the program the muscles around my mouth hurt because I wasn’t used to that much smiling. Like with make up, the smile on the ice must be much bigger than the usual smile (stage make up versus day wear make up). Until it suddenly becomes a part of the program and the skater doesn’t even know he/she is doing it.
