Final season of American Idol AI15

Aaaaddddaaammmm reprise!!!! Why didn't they let him sing that whole song!

I just had to stop quick to say that the Cookie Monster commercial was damn funny. :P

Overall I think this has been a bad night for everyone.

Except for Adam Lambert. He was really good. The contestants all paled in comparison to him.

ETA: Worst performance goes to JLo. Mackenzie's performance of "Billie Jean" is the most special one we've heard? No. David Cook's performance was a pivotal moment in Idol history. At least Ryan had the good sense to mention David.

Wow! The females been dropping out like flies. I knew that was gonna happen. Now there are more males than females. Sonika is toast next week. So it will be just 1 female in the top 4. Dalton hasn't lived up to his audition. He's been regressing the last couple of weeks. He's next to go after Sonika. LOL! Was there a glitch in the production? They showed the wrong back story prior to Dalton's second performance.

Weird. I saw a story about him being bi-polar. It was sad, especially since Dalton said he hates thinking about the period when he was initially diagnosed. But, clearly, Idol is all about the sob stories.

Voice is even worse. It's like if you gotta a sob story u have a better chance of getting on the show than someone who may be a little better, but with no sob story.

America, your song choices suck! LaPorsha was my favourite, but the songs were too similar. And No More Drama is a five and half minute song that builds into fierceness! To make LaPorsha try to bring that to a song in one minute and forty five seconds is no fair. But she did quite well considering.

Glad they chose Sonika over Tristan to continue. I agree that Sonika will be gone next week, but if it were up to me, she'd come in third. Dalton should probably go, although his Sounds of Silence performance was way better than Numb. And MacKenzie made me think of watching paint dry. His version of Billie Jean suck all the life and soul out of the song. Some songs can be stripped down into an acoustic version, but that song is all about the pulsing beat. I'm listening to David Cook's version right now and he makes the most out of this kind of version of the song. But it's like listening to a man perform the song versus a boy doing it.

Trent's song selections didn't serve him well at all. America, you wrecked the show this week!

Unless you're Sonika. I'm sure she has had someone in her family with an illness or who died. She just chose not to go that route. I'd be the same, I just don't want my sorrow broadcast to a national audience.

Is there any reason to watch, other than Glambert? I have it taped.

Not really. But DO watch both of Adam's performances ... his reprise of "Mad World" at the very beginning and the debut of his new single, "Welcome to the Show" in the 2nd half. He was fantastic! I never cease to be amazed by the purity, power, range and pitch-perfect quality of his voice. His good looks certainly aren't going downhill either!!

WTF? Last week they did the most overused songs in the Idol playbook & this week they let the fans choose? And in neither week did the songs fit the singer. By this time we should be getting a sense of what kind of artist they want to be but how can we if they don't let them choose. Most of them were a really bad fit. And there were a lot of off-key moments. Even LaPorsha was pretty bad. I could hardly understand a word of the lyrics of her 2nd song but she really got the chosen one edit. Her 2nd styling was an improvement though.

These judges really suck. Most of the top 10 should have never made the top 10 but if they were going to choose them why not mentor them & match them with the right songs? (This is my gripe every year.)

I'm not happy that AI is going off the air but I mean by that that I miss the good AI. JLo has ruined it for me along with a number of things. Harry pontificating at every opportunity, the producer manipulating who makes the live shows, no mentoring or ineffective mentoring of the contestants, tongue baths for weak performances, the list goes on & on. None of the remaining singers will be a worthy bookend to Kelly Clarkson. Trent & LaPortia have really good voices but I don't see star quality in either one. Sadly AI is going to end with a whimper, not a bang.

Keep in mind that none of Kelly Clarkson's earlier performances made it on to the show because it was thought she lacked star quality. I believe we only got to see her first audition years later when they did the "American Idol Rewind" show. I remember something Simon Cowell said about not being able to see something that was right in front of his face. I thought that to mean that normally he can spot someone with great potential right from the get-go, but he missed it with Kelly. :)

I didn't think she had star quality either. I thought Tamyra Gray had more star quality. I think Kelly became famous because she sang decent pop songs. As much I wanted to not like her songs I kinda do. Because in the beginning I thought she was a diva, biting the hand that fed her. She wouldn't let AI contestants sing her songs. But later she allowed it. Other winners mostly sang crappy songs, even Carrie Underwood. But she looks like a Barbie, so that's why she's famous.

That may be true but by the time there were only 5 contestants left she had really pulled ahead of Tamyra & Justin. Jordan Sparks had a lot of vocal problems early on but by this time she had worked a lot of them out & started pulling away from the pack. Neither LaPortia or Trent have an upward trajectory. They aren't wowing us more than they did 6 weeks ago. I vote for Trent because I like his voice (and there's no one else) but he's no David Cook or Adam Lambert. He's more a Nick F. And LaPortia isn't singing the kind of songs that attract teens & 20 somethings. She's more like Mariah & Celine -they may pull big audiences in Vegas but neither is a pop star.

Kelly won Simon over with Stuff Like That There. Prior to 40s night, he was firmly in the Tamyra/Justin camp.

From the way back machine, remember how much Simon hated Nikki?

I thought Kelly was strong from the start and that's where she separated herself from everybody else, although it was along with Tamyra, who was equally strong. They were the two that everyone thought would be the final two, so when Tamyra left in fourth place, the audience booed for about thirty seconds. Kelly faltered during the final five as her voice wasn't trained well enough to handle what was required of her. I Surrender (top four week) is an example of a really bad performance from Kelly.

I know often the judges talk about people improving so much week after week, but for the most part I've rarely seen much dramatic change from anybody in the course of what ends up being a matter of days, really. Sure, there's improvement of course, but off the top of my head, I can't think of anybody who was a significantly different performer or singer from their first to their last performance on American Idol.

Trent is a much better singer than David Cook, but doesn't have the cool factor. Or as clear a vision of being someone who could have some success on the pop charts. Nick probably has a better chance of hitting the charts than Trent, but the difference in vocal ability is night and day. (Nick can only dream of being able to sing like Trent.) As for La'Porsha not doings songs that would attract 20-somethings, here are some of Kelly's choices:

At Last
Walk On By
Without You
Save The Best For Last
I Say A Little Prayer
(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman
Stuff Like That There
You're All I Need To Get By

If song choices dictated where a performer ended up, Kelly would be performing at a bar in Corpus Christi as part of a Motown oldies night. La'Porsha needs to pick songs that will be smashes on the pop charts. In other words...do the exact opposite of what Candice Glover did.

To be fair to the AI1 contestants, once it was down to the top 10, the format required 6 straight weeks of oldies - Motown, 60s, 70s, big band, Burt Bacarach, and 80s/90s.

It's not so much the songs (since the contestants have very little choice) as it is the way the song is sung. LaPortia stands there in her version of diva gear (let's just say she has different taste than I do) & throws in 50 runs in every song. She has a beautiful voice but I don't hear anyone on the radio even remotely in her style.

Did anyone watch last night? Trent was fantastic on both songs. He's really pulling away from the pack. LaPortia had her worst night which was still good but not exceptional plus she flubbed her lyrics in the 1st song. Of course the judges didn't mention that. If any of the others had done that they would have backed up the bus & run over them again.

I thought Mackenzie was pretty bad for both songs & Dalton was bad on his 1st. I had thought MacKenzie would outlast Dalton but after Dalton's 2nd song, I think he will be safe next week. Dalton's 2nd song wasn't perfect but it was very emotional & heartfelt. 1st time I've liked him in a couple of weeks although that's the fault of the wrong songs that they've been making him sing.

Not this again. That was never true. When that rumor started Kelly went on record and said she has NEVER been asked to clear her songs and it would never have been her decision anyway since the label is the one who owns the songs. When she found out about it she began making a lot of noise and the people who had the power to release the songs did but they also said a request was never made from Idol.

Trent's "Chandelier" was exceptional. La'Porsha's voice was great, but both performances were possibly her two weakest performances of the series. But I'm sure there is very little (if ANY) classic rock in her music collection. At the end of the show, as Dalton broke down over his emotional performance, I noticed he kept hiding his face. When his face was visible, I noticed it was completely dry, no sign of a tear, not even moist eyes. (Unlike La'Porsha, who cries almost every time and you can see the tears pouring down her face.) Which made me wonder if Dalton wasn't really emotional, but did some acting for us in order to get some votes. I think it might work. It helped that the producers put him last and Ryan introduced it by saying, "and now...an emotional performance from Dalton". Maybe it was in rehearsal?

I predict either MacKenzie or LaPortia will go home next week. Mackenzie because he had the weakest night or LaPortia for several reasons. For the 1st time she didn't win the night, she made a visible mistake, & she didn't have a "moment" like Trent & Dalton did. BTW I felt like Dalton was really crying. I noticed his dry eyes but it looked like he wiped them before he stood up. Either way, he had his best vocal last night & it being the last performance of the night didn't hurt either. I don't really like his voice but until last night he had the best stage presence IMO. Trent has improved so much ever since someone suggested (was it Scott B?) that he practice in front of a mirror. Last night I thought he was the epitome of an American Idol type.

My ranking of the top 4 over the whole season would be:
1. LaPorsha
2. Trent
3. MacKenzie
4. Dalton

But, based on this week's performances only, I would have them:
1. Trent (by a LOT!)
2. Dalton
3. LaPorsha
4. MacKenzie (thought he was really boring on both songs)

I think Dalton earned his spot in the final 3 this week and MacKenzie should go home. And, I'm now thinking that Trent should win the whole thing. We shall see ...

trent's 2nd song last night was the best thing i've heard on idol in a while. yet, it isn't one of the songs available to buy on iTunes. they won't even take my money.

And then there was one female left. So much for having the females outnumbering the males in the live rounds. La Porsha still has the best voice, but boring performance. I wouldn't be surprised if she got the lowest votes, but it would most likely be Mackenzie. I liked Trent's and Dalton's 1st song better than their second.

Last night the show aired for the last time from Studio 26 so there were some emotional moments. The top 4 got their hometown visits & then sang songs they got to choose. MacKenzie was eliminated after singing Hallelluiah, the most overused song on the planet & his version was probably the least memorable. IMO Trent stole the show with all 3 of his songs & LaPortia received her 1st critique for her 2nd song. Dalton's 1st song was great (for him) but his other 2 had vocal problems.

LaPortia's hair was in braids & then wrapped around her head like a huge beehive. It was back to that caramel color & didn't really look like hair. It looked like strips of burlap that had been braided. I know that has nothing to do with her voice but :scream:

I'm looking forward to the finale next week when all the past idols come back.

^^ Agreed .. I would've bought all of Trent's songs if I still bought AI covers. LaPortia was good, but not the standout for me. (And I actually watched this live and PVR'd the free dance. Hmmm ... :slinkaway )
