DWTS S26: All-Athletes Edition! (i.e. the DWTS thread for NOT yammering about what happened 24 years ago)

Yes, his citizenship is Australian, but he is not Australian (ethnically).

But when speaking of ancestral ethnicity, quite a few Australians are ethnically British, since many of their ancestors were deported to Australia from Britain, except for the native Aborigines, and immigrants who came to Australia from other countries (like Farber's family arriving from Russia, and Mel Gibson's family moving to Australia from Peekskill, NY USA).

Um, anyone who doesn't happen to like or love Adam for whatever reason doesn't mean they are "clueless." I post this as a longtime fan of Adam's who has been bemused, but not surprised, at the wider audience he has been/is reaching beyond...

 Eh well, apparently not in your opinion. Color me 'not surprised' either about Adam Rippon's widespread appeal and popularity post his Olympics appearances and global media exposure. :D

Adam is charming, talented, witty, genuine and fun to be around. More power to him! :cheer2:

I'm going to whip out a tired but true fsuism and claim that public reaction to Adam "says more about us than it does about him"

20 years ago the general public wasn't ready for the jelly of a battle of the openly gay Brians. More loss ours, as the top two skaters in the world were both privately out gays and the media didn't celebrate it at all. They were both true to themselves but not publicly out, and although not the personality of either, had they gone the witty and flirtatious route of Adam the backlash would have been harsh.

Adam is very likable but he's also somewhat of a basic 2018 gay boy, so the fact that he's a media darling and widely popular says more about the general public's acceptance of gay culture than it does about him being the Noel coward or Oscar Wilde of our era.

But thus far I've never laughed harder than when an average person claimed on the internet that this famous celebrity who's enjoying tons of media attention has nothing for them to be jealous of. really queen?

My belated comments: Overall, not bad for week one of DWTS. There were a couple who were clearly at a much lower level of dance performance ( I won't name names, everyone who watched knows who they were). Mirai did very well and even though I expected Adam to do well, he exceeded my expectations. :respec: Tonya's bio narrative annoyed me, but her dancing was really quite good. And like almost every football player who has been on the show, Josh did very well.

@rfisher, I won't cry if he wins if he keeps on dancing well. He has an added advantage in having Sharna as his pro partner -- she is a very talented choreographer and a popular pro who has yet to win DWTS. For infrequent viewers this won't matter, but some fans of the show vote for their favorite pros as much as for the "star" contestant.

OMG I love Sharna! She's such a great dancer as well as a truly lovely person (and gorgeous; total girl crush here!).

@jkl As a girl who can't walk in heels whatsoever, I agree. Wear whatever makes you comfortable!

All three, Mirai, Tonya, Adam, are outstanding dancer, almost look professional, and likely because of ice skating, etc. Kristi, Meryl, Nancy were also outstanding dancers... I wonder if it is fair to invite ice skaters to a competition where required skills closely resemble the sport they come from.... (i am enjoying their dancing, none the less).

The required skill to win this competition is popularity with a bit of dancing.

yeah, let the couch potatoes, who know very little about dancing, judge ... that's another reason why i am not watching these types of talent shows, except for skaters' dancing... Letting non-professionals judge a professional activity is a bad message to society: impacting results without learning/knowing the subject.

Thanks for your reflections.

I'm going to take my further comments to the GSD thread about Adam being honored as one of TIME's 100 Most Influential People, as this somewhat OT discussion is probably better discussed there and not in this DWTS thread.

Aren't many of the celebrities in other seasons actors? And many actors have considerable dance training.

I still think ice skaters, especially from ice dance, have a great advantage, since dance/ballet is a regular part of their training.

week 2 press release: https://www.disneyabcpress.com/abc/pressrelease/dwts-athletes-episode-2602-57/
In round one, each couple will perform an individual dance: quickstep, foxtrot, Viennese waltz, cha cha, paso doblé or salsa. Then, in round two of the evening, the athletes and their pros will be grouped into two teams – Team 1950s Tennis and Team 1970s Football. The team dance scores will be combined with the athlete’s individual dance scores along with the previous week’s overnight votes for a final tally to determine the eliminations at the end of the night.

Adam and Tonya have quickstep, Mirai has foxtrot
Each couple will dance to the following songs (in alphabetical order):

Woooooow.... I can’t believe they gave Mirai a foxtrot with A Small World! Even if it’s a lullaby, it’s such a poor match. Foxtrots are typically boring, and also simultaneously hard! Everyone needs to vote for her this week!

Quick steps are easy to do on DWTS if your a lady. Just stay in hold for a minute and use a long dress to hide any mistakes. Adam will probably do just fine.

Ugh. Mirai will probably be voted off just because of that song. :(

IIRC she quit coaching because she couldn't get enough students because she couldn't take them to competitions.
That what she says now. That's not what was said at the time. She was coaching little kids and the parents loved her but then she threw a hubcap at her boyfriend and very soon after that she stopped coaching. I was more involved in the skating world then and people who skated at the rink she coached at said the parents took their kids out of her charge because of the hubcap incident.

She claimed in her book to only losing one student due to the hubcapping incident. Though any pro-skating deals certainly dried up. IIRC, she said she quit because of a foot injury sustained after a car accident to an already infected foot. Later she said it was due to “not being able to attend competitions so what’s the point.” I always thought she could survive on being a jump coach, but who really knows.

Reminder: This thread is "the DWTS thread for NOT yammering about what happened 24 years ago"

There's already one DWTS thread that's been turned into a "let's debate endlessly all things Tonya" thread. So please take any further discussion about kneecaps and Tonya's coaching career or whatever there.

PLEEEEEEAAAAASE!!!! :wuzrobbed :wall: :wuzrobbed :wall:

I think Mirai's skating to an instrumental version of the song, but it doesn't seem very Foxtrot-y...I believe someone also mentioned in one of those instagram stories that the blue dress that Mirai was seen wearing was just her dress for "practice", and not the actual dress that she will be wearing. I noticed on the first night that many of the athletes did not seem to have flattering outfits, but Mirai's was one of the exceptions? Anyways, if she gets voted off, it probably won't be due to the song (or due to how she actually performs her dance, tbh).
