Chinese Skating News, Pt. 4: Fresh Noodles for Milan 2026

David is another skater in the Yan Han mold, I hope he stabilizes his 3A and builds more stamina. Best presentation and skating skills of the boys who skated here. Guess this means there are four potential men coming up after Jin Boyang (Yudong, David, Tonghe, Zhiming).

Yudong is going to take this, still hope he changes coaches.

I'm in love with Li/Wang, please let them make Milan ?

Next up, Pairs free skate!

Well pairs SP scoring was kinda iffy wasn't it... No way Zhang/Huang should be that far behind the first two. I though they should've gone into first... It's been like what 20 years and Luan Bo pairs are still getting the Luan Bo treatment.

Need to wait for the protocols but I think Wang/Jia was even ahead of Zhang/Huang in TES??? How on earth did that happen when Wang/Jia had a fall on the throw, 2A vs 3T SBS, and Zhang/Huang having a maybe a slight edge in the twist.
I tried to cram a rewatch in before the free skate, but honestly I don't have any thoughts, I am just happy China has three potential pairs after P/J.

Hmm, actually, no. Yes, I agree that Zhang/Huang should be leading (best throw and twist for me). I think Wang of Wang/Jia also looked the least comfortable out there, of the six of them (it was particularly visible next to Jia who seemed to be going for it).

Please someone give Li of :scream: a job at a corporate just so their coach and Sun's mother can't make him skate with her anymore...

Zhang/Yang 181.64
Wang/Jia 181.09 (wow, awfully close)
Zhang/Huang 169.26

Good top 3, prefer Zhang/Yang and Zhang/Huang to Wang/Jia though. Zhang/Yang and Peng/Jin should be able to hold China Pairs up for a bit.

:scream: is 4th, and we're probably going to be "treated" to them for some more years, maybe at least till she turns International Junior age...

Women's free skating next!

Nini's going to win, hope to see her do very well in the future, she's going to be China's shot at a team medal in Milan. I wonder if Hongyi will (be allowed to) do the grand prix next year, only finished 6th.

Huge cheers for the girls from the crowd, well deserved.

I wonder if Hongyi will (be allowed to) do the grand prix next year, only finished 6th.

None of the girls who finished 2-5 will be senior eligible next season (Ruiyang was born in SeptDec. 2007, both Ruotang and Ruichen were born in 2009 and Shuxian was born in 2011) so I won't count Hongyi out now.

Oh, I need to explain that I wrote this post assuming that you @On My Own meant the host spot of CoC (if there is one). If there's no CoC then I don't think Hongyi will even be in the selection pool.

Xiangyi seemed to be wearing some special makeup? But I don't know what the story behind is.

Yeah, it was a vague question on my part, sorry. I meant it more like "Is Hongyi going to even be allowed to throw her name in the selection pool for the GPs at all, even if there's a host spot, with this finish, or is she just skating for pleasure and to maybe make bilibili videos about it?" I don't think anyone's going to pick her if she's okayed to register for the senior GPs though, unless, as you said, CoC host spot exists.

Women FS protocols: https://weibo.com/7725475508/Mo9B8bhkU and a small correction to post #375: Ruiyang was born in December 2007 not September.

An Xiangyi https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1hW4y137o2/ Would LOVE to see what Tom Dickson could do with her.

Looks like Cfed has their heart set on making Zhang/Yang the firm number 2 this season... they were saved by their lead from the short (imo, slightly overscored), and somehow won despite aborting a lift entirely in the free... To be fair Wang/Jia did lower their sbs jump difficulty. Still, Zhang/Huang's PCS is nonsense, they shouldn't be significantly behind Wang/Jia in any category... I also agree that Wang/Jia is kinda lacking in performance. Their 3FTh is still one of the most frightening yeet and pray Chinese throw of all time and always seems like a complete dice roll on whether they land it or not.

I just saw more crazy douyin comments from :scream: yesterday (which were apparently from last year). The girl's going for world champion yall and doesn't sound like she'll settle for anything less... her (or her mum's, idk) comments was stuff like "yes I want to be world champion" and "yes I want to be even better than the world champions, what's wrong with that?". Umm sure dream big but maybe get an age-appropriate partner first?? And when people said that watching :scream: made them uncomfortable her reply was "don't watch Sui/Han then, they also have a 13 year age gap" like WHAT. I would really like to know how old she thinks S/H are...

I'm fine with Zhang/Yang winning here, even though they had a bad lift. Their program is better, their SP performance was much better, and they're the better skaters overall, even if she seemed kind of nervous here.

Wang/Jia remind me a bit of Zhang Dan/Zhang Hao. I always thought he outshone her performance-wise. However, here they were both ill-suited to the long program. I'd give them a lead in the LP and put them behind Zhang/Yang overall too, so it shook out the way I wanted, even if I felt it was too close.

Zhang/Huang are good (@Gris gave the wrong video there by the way, here it is https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1FT411m731/), and I liked their presentation the best. Fantastic throws and twists, even though I think she's going to experience a growth spurt soon so we'll have to see how it holds up. Need work on SBS. Firm number 3 for me, might be number 2 if they hold up next season, but if not Zhang/Yang are still there to pick up after P/J. Huang impressed me greatly last season with his performance quality at Nebelhorn too, hopefully this pairing works out for him.

Good to see Nini's videos gaining a huge number of views in a short while, she's very much their women's hope. Her movement quality is fantastic, it's almost unbelievable she's only 16. I just hope she goes to a choreographer who doesn't make her writhe so much, she doesn't need it.

Good to see the boys spazzing in the stands after various skaters, lol, it's a sport, and I like those shots.

Zhang/Huang aren't going to be number 2 or even number 3 for the next few years at least though because they can't compete internationally ?

And yes Jiaxuan will only be senior eligible in 2025-26 season.
I did forget about the international age eligibility criterion, so I guess we're only going to be seeing P/J, Z/Y, and W/J for the next two seasons (and what's remaining of this). But I'd still rank them the same way in terms of pure talent within the Chinese pairs for now.

ETA: Can they do a round in juniors next season?

What's going on with Peng/Jin? Jin Yang was at Nationals and this interview he gave sounds like subtly dropping bad news. He said they are 60-70% recovered and his position now is athlete-cum-coach and in charge of planning their own training, which just confirms that they don't have a coach lol. And Peng is back home in Harbin for spring festival presumably, with just 2 weeks to go to 4CC do they even plan to go? :(

Kind of strange they wouldn't even tap Luan Bo, Yu/Jin was hers. Maybe they just want to take it easy.

No way they'll go back to Luan Bo, internal politics... they would burn too many bridges and neither of their affiliations would allow that. Luan Bo is at Qiqihar now and P/J are Harbin/Beijing.

But if they don't even have a coach, what is the point? Maybe they'll skip 4CCs, but this is so disappointing. No bronze in 2019, no world medal yet again in 2022 even though it would have been a cake-walk, and now seemingly no coach? In fact if their federation had allowed them to build momentum, they'd have contended for an Olympic medal last season too, they were underscored in both the team and individual events.

Well, I'll hope they escape China next season, in case they're actually wishing to compete.
