2018 Summer TV New/Returning Shows

I was laid up for awhile and developed an appreciation of "The Goldbergs" and the youngest son (and narrator's) love for eighties movies. Fun show. Also I love that the intro listing the cast of "Mom" is female. Usually it is male, male, male, female, male....

"Dietland" I am watching it and I'm not sure where it is going but it has held my interest. One thing I like is the Verena/Plum psychologist/patient relationship. It is interesting to see Plum, who has walled off of her feelings so she isn't hurt by the fat comments and rejection, open up to the range of emotions she has suppressed. Welcome to the world Plum. Now this "Jennifer" terrorist group....if they really existed Harvey Weinstein should run for the hills.

Caught up on Picnic at Hanging Rock - ugh. Not familiar with the previous movie or book, I didn't realize the ending would still be ambiguous for the girls. That just made me feel like I wasted 6 hours.

On the other hand, I can see why Killing Eve was getting so much buzz, I'm in for the season.

Its very quirky, and just plain silly, quick, HA HA humor. The premise is like they are making a "documentary" following Josh as he defends his client. No laugh track. Its weird and silly and sarcastic, but its still actually telling a story! Its funny.

A not related but funny to me part is that I work with a lady who is a dead ringer for Kristin Chenoweth, just like 10-15 years younger. She is a tiny wisp of a girl, blonde hair, wears sky high heels, and has a sing-songy cheerful voice just like Kristin, looks exactly like a young Kristin Chenoweth and every time she walks by or I hear her talking all I can think is 'omg its Kristin Chenoweth!'. If that old wives tale about everyone has a twin somewhere in the world is true, this girl is totally Kristin Chenoweth's twin. And her name is Bambi. True story!

10 p.m. - CASTAWAYS - ABC

This one looks interesting:

The human need for companionship under extreme circumstances is tested when 12 diverse individuals are dropped alone throughout various islets in Indonesia and challenged to survive among washed-up luggage, scattered resources and abandoned structures while knowing there are other castaways out ther… MOREe but unaware of how many, their locations or when they will be rescued. The only way to leave the remote islands is to persevere long enough to be rescued or to quit. As dramatic situations unfold, the series flashes back to the real lives of each participant in documentary fashion, demonstrating haunting parallels to the lives they left behind.

A trailer from youtube:

Castaways - New Series TUESDAY 10|9c

I'm not the biggest connoisseur of reality TV but this one does look very interesting. I'm sure a concept like this would attract certain people who feel they need to go through something like this because of whatever is missing in their normal lives.

I agree that it looks to be interesting and plan to check it out.

I have a confession: I watch the CMT Network's "Making the Team." Their new season just started. There are so many reasons not to watch this show. But those women (Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders) are wonderful dancers (most of them.)
But I am annoyed that they are not paid well, the issues with weight (and these are fit women imo), the strict rules and of course the fact that 400 women are competing for 13 spots this season means if you don't like the rules there are hundreds who are happy to see you go for their shot. And then I think some of the choreo needs an update. All of that and I'm still watching. Sigh.

I thought Castaways was beautiful. Not just with the incredible scenery, but the stories of all the people involved. And how nice it is to see people in these strange situations just being people instead of conniving their way into winning a big prize that they will lie, cheat and steal to wrestle away from another person. Can't wait for episode two. :respec:

Castaways is being re-aired on ABC tonight (Saturday) at 8pm if you missed it but were interested. :)

I finally got around to watching my recording of Castaways. Agree that this is going to be very interesting to follow. I will probably watch episode 2 a lot sooner than I got around to watching episode 1.

I'm watching too. Guilty pleasure of mine.

Good to know...I see that some of the women never made it to the first game; I think of the last few candidates cut and wonder about their feelings. I do hope some that were cut at camp make the team this year.

I have started the first season of "Better Call Saul" and I have to admit this isn't the dark "Breaking Bad" sort of series yet. Saul (or Jimmy) is really a good egg when you scratch the surface though sometimes you really have to scratch hard. Apparently this series is set six years before the "breaking" episodes so I'm curious to see how he evolves. I love Michael McKean's performance as Jimmy's older brother.

Whatever you do, do not search out spoilers and close down or skip over anything if you stumble across them as Season 4 just started and ssssooooo much has happened! In fact, try to catch up as quick as you can so you can jump into Season 4 while its airing. :D Just keep in mind it is a very different type of story telling than Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad they was killin' people from Day 1 and the story moved at a break neck speed. Better Call Saul is more slow and methodical and building a backstory and history that flows so smoothly to Breaking Bad you would think this show was written first. Some people complain about the pace of the story because they are expecting 'Breaking Bad', but this is a totally different type of story telling and it all pays off in the end! It is freaking brilliant!!!!!!

Monday, August 20
8:00 p.m. - CBS - Carpool Karaoke with James Corden and PAUL MCCARTNEY

I kept seeing commercials for this happening on the late night show originally, so I recorded it and watched it and kept it to watch again. It made me laugh and cry.

This is supposed to have additional footage because it is a full hour show - minus commercials, of course. I'll record it and watch it and laugh and cry and keep this one.

I'm really enjoying Castaways. It's very strange that it follows Bachelor In Paradise though, because in tone, the two shows are pretty much the exact opposite of one another. Castaways feels serene and poetic to me, but somehow spicy as well in that we see how much loners will put up with those they meet up with (and how those who really need to be around others are completely oblivious to how they might be invading another person's space), where males are succeeding or failing in being with a female on a more level playing field, how it looks like all of the people of colour are either being shunned or ostracized in one way or another. The telling of each story is very beautiful as well as informative. When each episode ends, I find myself craving more and knowing that I will have to wait a week to get that.
