American Cup Time! :D :cheer2:

Women’s AA live on NBC right now. Men’s AA will be live on NBCSN at 5pm EST.

Shallow question: Has Tim Daggett lost A LOT of weight? He looks almost as slim as Terry Gannon now.

Giorgia Villa had to go from Milan to Paris Paris to Detroit Detroit to Milwaukee
Wow that might explain why she had such a rough meet. Poor Giorgia.

It was good to see Morgan Hurd with a clean comp, and there were lots of nice things. Gadirova is such a star. She casually beat Morgan on 3 pieces, and the fact she got the highest DTY score with 2 US gymnasts also doing DTYs in the same meet on home soil is a credit to how much the judges value her gymnastics. It's very rare.
It will be interesting to see if she's able to progress on UB, because she's got the potential to be the best non-Simone gymnast in the world IMO.

And lovely to see Hatakeda do so well, she was so happy with her bronze.

It would have been nice had NBC shown some of that. All that I saw was Gadirova's FX, which was a shame because she was impressive.

I'm glad Morgan won. That was great for her confidence. I was also glad to hear Tom Forester say that there would be 2 automatic qualifiers to the Olympics and that 2 were going to be selected, most importantly saying that those 2 had to be all-arounders. At least now we have some solid criteria for selection.

Now if the federation can get the rest of its sh*t together....

I am so spoiled by OlyChan and NBCSports Gold, NBC’s broadcast coverage of ANY sporting event is always a big downer for me. Fer gawd sake, the following event was golf without any big name Americans in contention and it wasn’t even the round that counts. It wouldn’t have hurt their revenue stream to extend the time slot and show the other high scoring routines at the end. It was nice to see Morgan do well, but I needed to see more of Gadirova.

Beam: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc90SuDOW14&list=PLJBt-Bl-D7nbHSUB1kl80I_WAheCVcUiP&index=30&t=0s
And if you want to see it again, floor: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PkvelMZFeeU&list=PLJBt-Bl-D7nbHSUB1kl80I_WAheCVcUiP&index=40&t=0s

I first saw her at junior worlds last year and loved her. Great to see her making the transition to senior so well. She has upgraded her difficulty a lot since last year - very impressive.

Thanks! The one labeled beam keeps bringing up bars, fwiw.

On the bars - I hope she can clean up her handstands. I also have absolutely no idea how she could pancake like that off the bars and get back up and finish the routine so well. These athletes are amazing.

I may have been sloppy with the copy and pasting. I think it is fixed now.

Bars was her weak event even if she had hit - however, her other three events would be very useful for GBR. She would also be a good choice to send to the European Championships to try to get an extra spot for the Brits.

Thank you! That beam routine was worth watching. I'm a sucker for interesting beam mounts. Loved hers.

I’ll admit that I like the idea of 4. At times, that 5th spot seemed like a 5th wheel. I think omitting spot 5 will help to make a more well-rounded, competitive athlete. Not that I don’t support specialists, but it is good to see a gymnast seriously train to viably compete 3 or 4 strong disciplines. It also makes for a more exciting and interesting AA contest.

The Brits are the most useless at strategising when it comes to the Olympics.
They could have been smarter with their World Cup assignments, and had a chance at the extra spot through there. But no. Instead, Ellie Downie is the non-scoring athlete at the Birmingham Cup :wall:
At the Olympics, I'm fully anticipating that in TF, everyone will do watered-down vaults and UB because they don't realise they're in with a chance of a medal only if everyone goes full-out.
And at Euros, I anticipate that they will take Gadirova, but that she won't compete bars....

But hopefully you're right.

This showed up as a recommendation:

I have to admit I was confused at first because I thought she did two double/double tucks.

 I can see why, although that camera angle doesn’t help with the first pass.

That said, this is a risky strategy because it a D panel really wanted to be tough, they could credit it as two double-double tucks and not count the second pass. I don’t think it’s super likely a US panel would do that but you never know.

But this early, team Myk already knows it’s a potential problem. She’s got time to make it clearer or swap it.

Yes, she could have broken her leg by hitting it on the low bar. or it's possible that hitting below bar could have caused her to have some kind of very dangerous fall.

She showed a lot of toughness getting back up there after whacking her heel and doing a good routine.

I remember when Jennifer Sey broke her leg doing a release move on bars during the World Championships. She hit her leg coming down. I won't post it, but I know it's on YouTube somewhere. It was really bad.

That was awful, she hit her leg, then landed sideways on it. But here she is now:

Jennifer Sey's autobiography made her gymnastics experience seem quite horrific and even the chapters about her post-gymnastics life made her seem quite bitter and also still very damaged by the experience through the way she talked about her body image and other issues. I'm glad that it seems like she has found success and hopefully happiness in the business world.
