A shame for Asuka Teramoto. Hoping for a full recovery, even if that means missing Tokyo.

I think she has a chance given she is an all around gymnast.

However, last year seemingly the gymnastics of everybody around her matured while her consistency, difficulty, and execution degraded.

Morgan also had (elbow?) surgery late in 2018 IIRC, which impeded her training going into 2019 I believe, especially on the arm events like vault and bars. A lot of her errors seemed like mental glitches too. Hopefully she has left all of that behind her and will come out swinging in 2020.

Going by what was shown on the recent episode of the All Around series, Morgan's working on bringing back the full twisting piked double back dismount on beam, the Fabrichnova tucked double-double dismount on bars, and a Van Leeuwen transition. It seems per FS Gym's Instagram she's also working on bringing back the Moors on floor. I think in the series she was also training a front layout to double twisting front layout on floor. It will be interesting to see if she shows any or all of these upgrades at the American Cup. She can't wait to 'peak for Worlds in October' like last year. This year the Olympics are in July so she's going to have to try hitting it out of the ball park each time - especially at Trials.

ETA: Errr ... Despite Laurie having a different body than in the last Olympics, her Ring Jumps are still better than Kara Eakers :shuffle:

Seems like Jade Carey will be first to qualify to the Olympics with her wins on vault and floor at the Melbourne World Cup this past weekend. Just 2 to go and she's in 1 of them.

Jade has maximum points... no need to compete unless she wants to. The only possible reason would be to increase her vault total score to put it out of reach of the Chinese vaulter who didn’t get to travel.

I just saw the World Cup where Jade Carey won floor and vault. I'm happy for her, but I was thrilled to see Vanessa Ferrari. She's 29 years old now and finished 2nd. I was glad to see her perform to something other than an Italian opera! She looks great, very fit. She's not as old as Chuso, but she certainly has earned my respect.

That would actually be the reason to compete - to ensure that Yu Linmin does not get maximum points and then she ends up in a tiebreaker. If she goes to Baku and beats Yu, then she would be mathematically guaranteed the spot.

Al Fong still having trouble getting his gymnasts to hit their leaps? That was one huge reason Terin Humphrey was so deduction-prone and scored low in spite of her difficulty.

Hernandez has her FIG license, so maybe she'll be getting a chance to compete at one of the upcoming events (Gymnix, Pan Ams, Pac Rim)
I am really looking forward to seeing an entire routine. She's killing me with the Instagram posts. Not that I don't appreciate seeing them, but she's teasing me!

Jade Carey deserved her placement.

The way she holds her neck hurts me.

She posed beautifully on the floor but she looks not into it.

She has a huge block on vault, but her air position is wild even when not obviously an error.

That is my honest balanced opinion.

It would be fascinating if Laurie made the Olympic team for the second time without ever competing at a World championships.

I can't see how she gets there from here. With only four members on the team, everyone needs to be an all-around this time (unlike Rio where you could have a specialist), and we haven't seen any bars or vault recently, right?

Laurie cutting it close. She’s not going to National training camp until April.

Just saw Jade Carey's FX from Melbourne. I've been saying for like the past ten years how although it kills me to say it as a fan of the golden age of gymnastics and lover all things dance and artistry that they should just get rid of the music and choreography because the women just can't seem to do it anymore with the tumbling they're doing and how harshly judged the dance elements are now for the most part with some exceptions. But nobody made that case better than Jade Carey there.

Rodionenko (sp?) is the source, and she has tried to retire Mustafina a few times.

Team size is 4 for Tokyo, but up to 2 additional individuals can qualify.

Yes, I read this

At first I read she retired but the information (from Rodionenko) is not training as of today and with 5 months till Tokyo things look complicated IMO

Team Russia appears to have withdrawn from American Cup. Coronavirus I suspect. Why travel in the Olympic year and risk illness.

Well, they are probably going to lose an Olympic spot on the women’s side as a result of withdrawal from that meet and also the Tokyo World Cup. Russia was in a good position to earn one of the three spots from the AA World Cup. Now they won’t be and also are not in a position to earn one from the event World Cups either. So at best, they can get one extra spot from Europeans and will have a maximum of five for the women. The men are in a better position, with a leading qualifier on p-bars from the event World Cups, but with the AAers they had at the World Cups, they gave away a pretty certain spot for a less certain one at Euros.

All that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Tokyo AA World Cup is either cancelled or relocated.

I’ve heard that the travel worry is more about getting stuck somewhere and the impact that might have on training. No one can afford to be away from the gym for 2-3 weeks this close to the Os.
