2024/25 OES News

Belgian Nationals (always the earliest Nationals in Europe?) took place on November 17-18, 2024 in Mechelen. Since it's over, I'm not going to create a separate competition thread in the National Championships 2024-2025 subforum in Kiss & Cry.

ETA: Thanks to @Hindernisse for pointing out that I missed seeing 2023 on the above results page! :slinkaway

New pairs team representing Iceland - Julia Sylvia Gunarsdottir & Manuel Piazza!
His last competition for Italy was 2023 CoC, so he should receive his release in mid-November!
Iceland's federation published a happy news article on the new pair after they debuted at the NRW Trophy Senior B in Dortmund last month and got the CTES minimum score of 75 (75.18) for 2025 Europeans in Tallinn! :):
Google translation of the 2nd half:
Júlía Sylvía, who is 19 years old, has competed for Iceland throughout her career, but so far in individual competition. She has achieved good results there and was, among other things, the first Icelander to win gold at an international tournament in the adult category.
Manuel Piazza is a 24-year-old skater from Ortisei in northern Italy. In recent years, he has been training with his former skating partner, Anna Valesi, at the International Skating Union (ISU) Performance Center in Bergamo.
The pair train in Bergamo, Italy at the ISU Performance Center under the guidance of Rosanna Murante and Ondrej Hotarek.
They train partly in Iceland under Benjamin Naggiar, Fjölnis' head coach, but he has been Júlía Sylvía's coach since 2021. Benjamin Naggiar is the choreographer in the team and has written both of the pair's competition programs.
Next on the pair's schedule is practice in Bergamo, but it's a short stop because the next tournament is next weekend when they compete in the PGE Warsaw Cup in Poland.
The Ice Skating Association of Iceland congratulates Júlía and Manuel on this impressive achievement.
Go Iceland!
Icelandic Nationals took place in Reykjavik, Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2024 - news item published beforehand: https://www.iceskate.is/2024/11/28/islandsmot-iss-2024/
Google translation:
.. About 40 competitors are registered from the Skating Club of Akureyri, the Skating Club of Reykjavík and the Youth Club of Fjölnir. There will be competition for the Icelandic championship in girls, youth and adult categories.
For the first time, a pair will win the title, but Júlía Sylvía Gunnarsdóttir and Manuel Piazza started competing on behalf of Iceland in November and have already reached the minimum level for the European Championships, which they will compete in in Tallinn at the end of January 2025. Júlía Sylvía Gunnarsdóttir is the reigning Icelandic champion. in the adult category, but it is clear that she will not defend her title in the individual competition.
Lena Rut Ásgeirsdóttir, the reigning Icelandic champion in the youth category, will now compete in the adult category for the first time, and Sædís Heba Guðmundsdóttir, the Icelandic champion in the girls category, has also moved up a category and is now competing in the youth category, but she took part in the Junior grand prix series on behalf of Iceland this fall. . It is therefore clear that new champions will be crowned in all categories.
At 12:30 on Saturday, ÍSS will hold a presentation and discussion meeting for parents/guardians. The talk will be given by Ashley Wagner, who competed on behalf of the United States and has won numerous medals, including at the World Championships and the Olympics. We strongly encourage everyone to attend this unique event!
At the end of the tournament, ÍSS will award recognition to the skaters who excelled during the year.

Thanks to SkatingScores.com I found out that the 2024-25 Lithuanian Figure Skating Championship (Senior, Junior, Advanced Novice and Basic Novice groups) was scheduled to take place this past weekend, Nov. 30- Dec. 1, at the Kaunas Ice Palace.

The Lithuanian Skating Federation's website has not published the results online in their Results section yet (https://www.lcf.lt/rezultatai/), but I did find a nice writeup on almost-15-year-old Luka Imedashvili (his ISU bio: https://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs00115480.htm) on ther News page with his JGP Gdansk videos embedded - "In total, Imedashvili scored 178.67 points and improved his career achievement by about 20 points. This result is the highest in the competition of this rank in the boys' category in the entire history of Lithuanian figure skating.":

Luka's ISU PB/SB score in the FS (119.27) came after Gdansk - at the JGP in Ljubjlana, Slovenia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTwIuQ0xNTk

Good lord Belgium had their nationals in November? What’s the point? I don’t understand these countries having their 2025 nationals in the year 2024. Especially when worlds are half of a year away lol.

And on top of that especially when November and December are full of tons and tons of other competitions
Almost every Nationals in Europe takes place in December (GBR’s was this past week) - coming up, according to SkatingScores.com:
Denmark & Norway this weekend

Next weekend:
Austria
Spain
Sweden
Finland (will bump up/post info in the Finnish news thread)
Four Nationals (Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia)
Switzerland
Estonia

Germany, Dec. 16-21 - ETA that I just posted Nationals info in the German news thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ews-2024-25-season.111888/page-3#post-6696556
France Elite: Dec. 20-21 in Annecy (info will be posted eventually in the French news thread)
Bulgaria, Dec. 19-22
Estonia Youth, Dec. 20-21
Italy - link is posted in the Italian news thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ting-news-updates.104247/page-23#post-6696191
Croatia, Dec. 21-22
Also, the Russian skating news thread in GSD has info on Nationals entries: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ting-news-in-2024.111670/page-12#post-6695073

Edited to add more info & links above. I hope to begin posting competition threads in the Nationals 2024-2025 subforum in Kiss & Cry but I don't know how many will have free livestreams these days. There's already an Israeli Nationals (Dec. 12) thread: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/threads/israeli-nationals-12-12-24.112307/

I know, I’ve never understood that. Japan as well. And also Russia.

With the Grand Prix final and the holidays for the countries that do celebrate them I never understood why all these countries have their nationals the year before, granted it’s December, but what a weird weird time to have a nationals. A lot of These people are currently competing at the Grand Prix finals so who is even thinking about nationals. Let athletes rest and regroup after all of these ISU championships. And worlds r months and months and months away, I don’t understand the rush for nationals.

Those results are from last year’s Belgian Nationals. This year, the nationals will take place on 17-18 January (indeed much later than usually) in Hasselt.

Thank you for correcting me! I will go edit my post(s) - funnily enough I JUST came across SkatingScores.com's page for Belgian Nationals, January, 17-18, 2025 and was wondering what was going on! :D https://skatingscores.com/2425/natbel/

Well, usually Europeans is held in early or mid-January, so waiting until after the new year to hold Nationals isn't ideal and usually Euros assignments are decided at Nats. Also - look at the KSF - they just held their ranking competition to decide their 4CCs assignments this past weekend, so the timing of most of these European countries holding their National Championships and determining their Euro assignments lines up with that.

Honestly, the US, Canada & Korea are the outliers in the FS season calendar with respect to holding Nationals in January vs. late November or December.

ETA - I believe Dutch Nationals aren't held until February usually in conjunction with Challenge Cup.

For many European skaters, Euros are the most important event of the season, and as Karen-W wrote, nationals are usually the qualifying competition for that (rankings based on multiple competitions, until recently in most coutries the winner of nationals would go to Europeans). Since Euros are usually held in January, nationals should happen before that. Also, nationals in Europe are usually not such a big competition, it's much different than in the US and Canada.

December around Christmas in the Western calendar makes sense for Russian Nationals, because it’s just before New Year’s Eve, which many Russian skaters have talked about as a family holiday, and before Orthodox Christmas, which is in early January.

Entries for Four Nationals are up

A notable absence are Anna Simova/Kirill Aksenov (SVK) in ice dance. There also seems to be a livestream. No idea if it's free, but the competition starts on 13th December, so maybe there will be more info closer to the competition.

I think Simova/Aksenov may be injured, but not positive.

Kucianova/Bidar aren't listed for pairs either, interestingly.

Not a current competitor, but I noticed that the person who shot this video of Jason Brown skating on outdoor ice in Vilnius is none other than former '90's-00's Lithuanian skater Aidas Reklys:
Aidas Reklys coached in the Chicago area for 8 years so knew Jason from that time: https://www.skateuniversal.com/about-me/

Thanks @Marta24 for the Four Nationals (Dec. 13-14 in Poland) link - will create the competition thread in the Nationals subforum by later today (ETA): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...hun-pol-dec-13-14-2024-cieszyn-poland.112389/

Since these 3 Nationals are concluded, I’m posting these 3 results links in this thread:

I´m pretty sure Mia has grabbed the Euros spot now. Selection will be done this week along with Winter University Game and EYOF. It wasn´t given Mia would end up with Euros this season, despite her strong ending at Worlds last year. Nationals was going to play a big role this year since both Linnea and Mia had even results throughout the first competitions. Both of them had some rough competitions. Mias best score before Nationals was 124, and the last international competition 119. She did two clean skates and produced her 2nd highest score in her career. I don´t know what has been bothering her before this season but she looked so much better now - confident and solid jumps.

Kucianova/Bidar have split and Simioli/Zarbo have retired due to injuries, so no Czech senior pairs teams at this time.

Yeeeeeesh... Hopefully Barbora will be able to find a new & better partner. And that Martin will just retire and stop splitting up promising junior pairs teams.

So the Spanish pairs does have Euros min, but the Fed doesn´t want the pairs team at Euros, they would instead want them to get World and JrWorld mins first? Do I understand it correctly? I find it odd. Only reason I can think of that makes sense is that they want to secure a spot at OG and therefor World mins is more important than Euros, but are they even good enough to make it to the final at Worlds? Surely it would be easier for them to reach the final at Euros and start collecting WR points to perhaps build reputation to the qualifying event in China next fall.

Edit: Oh I checked, they don´t have Euro mins, so that explains it.
