Josephine Lee won the Junior bronze medal at Tallinn Trophy today! :) Per Sportity: 174.02 (120.75 1st in FS) - landed 3Lo, 3Lz, 3F+2T, 3S, 3Lo<+2T, 3F<+2A+2A, 3T; 2 level 4 spins. She came back from 7th in the SP.

Unfortunately, Mia Kalin withdrew (ETA) reason unknown at this time.

She said something about being sick in the kiss and cry yesterday. 😢

That's right - I remember that now. Thank you.

2 other Eastern Sectional highlights so far for me today:

Sophie Joline von Felten leads Junior Women SP by almost 10 points (62.27) - "Sweet Dreams": 3A (3turns)+3T, 2A, 3F - she looked sharp and strong today.

Intermediate Women SP is still in progress and Deborah Liu, coached by Olga Ganicheva and Aleksey Letov, leads by 10 points with an impressive skate (3F+2T, 3Lo, 2A - all big jumps for her small size!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cm5KwVFaijs

Wonderful for Lee to earn a medal!

Finishing behind EST #2 and SUI #1 with continued underrotation issues does not bode well for Junior Worlds selection IMO.

Would that she was the only US lady with rotation issues.

She was about 5 points out of first.

Ting Cui only did triple toe double toe and triple salchow in the short. But the quality was lovely. And I am sooo happy she is coached by Skornikov now. Her jumps looked so much stronger. Can we PLEASE
send Lindsey Thorngren to that camp? 🙏 Lindsey needs to do something to shake up the rut she is in…and she is too talented a skater not to try.

Also I thought Sarah would have been higher than Gutmann…start order?? Although the judges need to give Sarah incentive to improve her expression. But she has become such a solid competitor! Admirable!

@mtnskater you should join us in the U.S. Sectionals thread in Kiss & Cry. :)
Also how many skating Hilbelink sisters are there!?!?
Three. But Keira, the youngest one, is injured and unable to compete in Senior at Sectionals this year. :( From the Kiss & Cry section:
Keira’s left foot/lower leg has been in a boot in the Instagram posts/stories I’ve seen lately - this one is dated Oct. 22: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DBcVeXPxOlY/

Her training group Ten80 posted a reel of their Pacific Coast Sectional qualifiers 3 days ago and Keira’s older sisters, Tia (Senior) and Maile (Junior), are included but not her so hopefully she will heal fully & well and come back strong next season:

Wow! Sherry Zhang was fantastic in PAC Sectionals senior short, scoring 67 and change! Great jumps, spins, expression!! On track for junior worlds if she can stay healthy. She is a good competitor too.
Did you look at the protocol? She got a 67 with a 3f+2t - that is NOT a score she would get internationally. The Nats-flation has hit early and is in full conflagration at Pac Coasts today.

💯 this. But, the inflation was most glaring for Sherry. Katie Shen skated clean program with triple toe triple toe combo, triple lutz and 2a and scored 61 and some change.

Sophie Jolene did 3a3t combo and still scored what, 63?

True, it will still fetch a decent score at junior worlds and that sp is good enough for her to be considered for jr worlds for now. (will wait for free of course)

The rest of her skating…spins, steps and expression were superior to the others. But I hear you on the triple/double. Thought the combo was textbook gorgeous though.

122 in the fs for Sherry with 2 falls , one fall into the wall with little performance. 190 combined. I am at loss for the inflation towards this skater. Gifted every time. Correct me if I’m wrong, she has yet to compete 2 clean programs in any competition.

The judges and technical panel officials are not necessarily all Nationals level qualified, though - some are Sectional-only qualified.
sometimes it's just the vibes they are recreating

Honestly, it doesn't matter why they're doing it. It's insulting to the intelligence of the actual fans of the sport and it is just so unrealistic about what any of them would score if they were ever sent out to compete internationally it ultimately harms the reputation of the US program overall. At what point do international tech panels just assume, because it's a US woman, that they DO need to take an extra bit of scrutiny with the rotations? At what point is that reputation so completely baked in that people start seeing rotation issues where there were none previously? Look at how long it's taken the Korean women to shake off that reputation that got built in for them with their talented women coming up through juniors post-Yuna Kim.

Many of these skaters are not isp skaters though. The scores just need to be correct relative to each other. It would be nice if they are like international scores but not necessary for the comp. Also it seems many of the judges are not trained to judge internationally

I would say because of the way the nationals selections are, there is an incentive to inflate, because the highest scores do matter beyond the top two, do I get that right?

I honestly don't think it's that big a deal. Every country does it. When my faves get massively overscored for their free dance at us nats, I'm just going to be like "yes this seems reasonable."

Usfsa needs to identify and deploy some kind of technology to coaches that "calls" underrotated jumps. It's endemic with our skaters.

I honestly wonder how many coaches and domestic judges can correctly identify a UR jump and offer helpful technical corrections. Seems like a rude question but it's been 20 years of this.

When will they start judging based on the actual day of performance and not based on reputation, coach, team USA etc. for example; alena budko has some very good skating skills and glide. But they never reward her with deserved components.

Starr’s under rotations got -4 goe but Sherry under got -3. Why? Is there a better > than the other?

Just so insulting to the hard working skaters!

I thought Sherry was the class of the field. Not that I'm an expert...
She can be the class of the field and still not be given a score that would be laughed out of any JGP she was entered in.
