2022–23 Canadian Pairs: News and Updates

Also, they would be eligible for GP assignments based on Trennt's Worlds finish last year, as a "Return of a Split Couple", and I could see them getting 2 assignments on the initial round, even if they don't wind up as a seeded team from Worlds.
That works if they don't compete internationally this year. If they do, they won't qualify, because they've already returned.

If they don't compete internationally this year, they wouldn't have to meet the GP minimums, and they could decide whether a post-Nationals international competition makes sense for them, or if a eligibilty for two GPs makes sense to take a pass to the late summer internationals in 2023.

I don't see any reason to believe they won't meet the GP minimum score if they do compete internationally this year. And, based on which teams were assigned 2 GPs out of the gate this year, I'm pretty confident that if they can go out and score 160+ at a Challenger or an ISU Championship they would get 2 next season right out of the gate. Zukova/Bidar, McIntosh/Mimar & Smirnova/Siianytsia were in the 156-159 range and they all received 2 assignments on the initial list. They are much better off competing at Golden Spin and getting the 4CCs or Worlds TES mins and then aiming to improve their score at one or both of those competitions after they've had more training time.

I think they might have a shot on their own if they are somewhat consistent. They just couldn't use the "return skater" option if they compete internationally this season.

I was more thinking that they should get the minimums because they would have a very good chance of getting 4CCs and Worlds assignments (especially if they can upgrade at least one of their throws to a triple) by placing well at Canadians, and would get WS points this season. Waiting for GP assignments based on return skater status doesn't make sense if they're ready to compete this season (and they should have more opportunity for pairs training now), particularly given the current lack of depth in pairs both nationally and internationally.

I viewed the protocols and the FS for P/M - perhaps they wouldn't get all the maximum levels with an international panel , but imo, there isn't that much "home cooking" with that score.
While they show a lot of promise, they would never get those levels at an international competition, nor would they get scores anywhere close to the "home cooking" ones the local judges gave them. I did a double take when I saw their FS score.

I agree, they did seem cautious. Rightly so being a new team and lack of competing the past few years. Her jumps are solid, looks like she may push him to expand his. Now it’s just to see if she will choose her singles over pairs or put full focus on pairs, putting full focus on pairs they have potential IMO.

So it seems obvious that mastering the throw triples is probably the hardest thing for a skater transitioning to pairs.... What are the chances that P/M or P/N will have at least one triple throw by Nationals? Or is that highly unlikely?

I think it is possible that both could have one by then - but consistency is always an issue with that element even for the best teams.

Lia was a pair girl for a season I wonder if she had a triple throw with the last partner?

Nic Nadeau I’m impressed. I hope he don’t outshine her, it was a beautiful skate. But it’ll be interesting to see how they develop into the bigger tricks.
if we are comparing Pereira/Michaud vs. Proft/Nadeau really no comparison...former much, much better technically. Realize this board (and skate watchers in general) have been focussed on the latter but apparently that a distraction,

Nic Nadeau was a charismatic, entertaining skater when he competed in singles and people are excited to see him return to the ice. It's not any kind of a slight against Pereira/Michaud. Realistically it's foolish to compare the two teams at this point, with Proft/Nadeau both being new to the discipline and in the process of recovering from injury. Personally I'm just thrilled to see the pair numbers growing, and beyond excited to follow the progress of both teams. :)

Proft/Nadeau have been training together for what? 18 months or more now?

Just because they didn’t do a throw triple in this event doesn’t mean that they haven’t been able to do one.

It‘s their first competition coming off an injury.

In other words, it’s a bit too early to tell yet exactly what they will become.

But it’s all very exciting to have four good pairs to watch this season.

The former I’d assume it’s Purkiss et al., as with his previous partnership.
I think it is Yvan Desjardins...Nadeau's singles coach & a woman I could not recognize going by the Kiss n Cry for Proft&Nadeau. He does pairs as well... Lubov has been around their rink as well although I have seen no pics of her there recently.

The Skate Canada press release about MK John Wilson mentions an injury: https://skatecanada.ca/2022/11/nine...cross-the-pond-for-the-mk-john-wilson-trophy/
Pairs team Lori-Ann Matte and Thierry Ferland were assigned to the event but have pulled out due to injury.

I thought that Brooke & Benjamin did a nice job in both the short and the long. Physically they match very well, both have a long and slender look. So congratulations on the medal.
Their throw jumps are up there with best of all Canadian teams and their triple twist is excellent. Still lots of growth to come as well but very promising.

I was impressed as well at the quality of the elements that McIntosh/Mimar executed. There’s a good foundation there.

Hopefully she didn’t hurt her shoulder too badly on the throw. They did not skate in the gala; I’m assuming the shoulder was the reason.
