ISU 2021-22 Junior Grand Prix announcement

5 Russian ladies. Is it already determined how the JGPF is handled?
There are extra Russian entries in the other disciplines too - part of the "reshuffle" to make up for their lack of participation in the two events in France.

There may or may not even be a JGPF, according to earlier posts.

Lol - I'm kind of loving how the USFS isn't sending our top jr ladies to Krasnoyarsk, same with Canada.

Men are always a crapshoot, especially at the junior level, but even here, neither the US nor Canada seem to be sending our top prospects.

Also interesting is that the USFS doesn't seem to be sending any of our pairs teams out on the JGP - none at either Kosice or Krasnoyarsk.

Dance is the only field where there are any teams who might challenge the chances of an all Russian podium.

It seems extra slots given also to 1 Belarus Man and 1 Great Britain Woman.

Canada also have a second Dance couple but they would have entitled to it based on normal reallocation procedures (Georgia doesn't have 2 entries they were entitled to).

Still no Japanese skaters. :(

ISU press release Young talents back in action as ISU Junior Grand Prix kicks off the Olympic season (Aug. 16): https://www.isu.org/isu-news/news/1...kicks-off-the-olympic-season?templateParam=15
Excerpts:
Due to the situation, the ISU Council concluded that it is impossible to implement a fair and consistent ISU Junior Grand Prix ranking for the 2021/22 season and therefore no ranking will be applied. Depending on the developments during the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating series, the ISU Council will evaluate if and how the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final (scheduled to be held on December 9-12, 2021 in Japan), could be held by applying alternative qualification criteria.
The Global Prize money per individual event of the ISU Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating is
US $22.500,00 (15.750 for events without Pair Skating) awarded to the medal winners in each category as follows:
Singles (Ladies and Men) Pair Skating and Ice Dance (per couple)
1st place US$2.000,00 US$ 3.000,00
2nd place US$1.500,00 US$2.250,00
3rd place US$1.000,00 US$1.500,00

...

Yeah, we don’t want to waste our top Jr Women’s energy with this one, Lol, since the GP system is all about points awarded in podium placements.

For many new JGP skaters, finishing top 10 gives WS points and an entry to the WS list. So it's not just the podium placements---even making top 5 will be tough.

I doubt I will even watch this one as it is 11 hours out of whack with my time zone, and all the events take place at a time when I am normally sleeping.

[she elaborated in the comments] withdrawal from JGP coz the government in HK has just imposed new COVID measures this morning that any arrivals from France will be quarantined for 21 days instead of 7 days so I needed to get back before the deadline.

Oh, that is rough! Poor kid! Hopefully she can get another JGP.

There are no singles Korean skaters in JGP Russia. There were supposed to be one man and two women competitors.

Recently, the Korean government imposed two-week quarantine regardless of vaccination status on travellers from Russia. This new rule affects coaches and KSU officials on their return trip to Korea.

I think KSU/ISU moved the singles skaters to other JGPs. JGP No. 3 has two Korean male skaters instead of one. Let's see what happens to female entries in other JGPs. Fans expect JGP No. 7 may have four Korean females skaters instead of two.

China is not sending any skaters either.
I would suspect that China's problem is similar to Russia in that their main vaccine, Sinovac, hasn't been approved by the EMA so their skaters would need to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in France and many other EU nations. I'm not sure what their status for traveling to and from Russia is but I don't think we'll see their skaters on the JGP this season Russia is the only non-EU JGP host nation.

Doesn't China also have very strict quarantine procedures? It might also be about how long they would have to be off the ice when they returned to China.

For reference, here are some notable standings for US/CAN and a few others before JGP starts. I will likely find RUS, JPN, and others later.

I just noticed that the JGP Courchevel #2 women's entries were updated today (Aug. 22) and Seoyeon Ji has been added: https://results.isu.org/events/jgpfra22021_JuniorWomen.htm
11 Seoyeon JI KOR - 4th in Courchevel #1 (originally assigned to a 2nd JGP #3 in SVK & is still listed there for now)
12 Chaeyeon KIM KOR - also listed for #3 SVK as of 8/17
13 Ahsun YUN KOR - 5th in Courchevel #1

Ji is still listed on the JGP Kosice entries list.

It seems that Team Ji decided that they'd rather stay in Courcheval one more week and reduce number of international trips.
Or they don't want to put her up against 4 Russians and Kalin, plus Thorngren again...

Call me cynical but I think the Courchevel 2 field is a bit more wide open than the Kosice field - Ruiter, Levito, Yun, Kim, and Pinzarrone (and maybe Lee but probably not) - Ji's chances of medaling are far better this coming week than they are in Kosice.

Looks like Flores/Tsarevski was removed from Kosice too, so I am taking this to mean we might only be sending each skater/team out once this season, and JGP final is either cancelled or being decided by top score only. I could be wrong but the next JGP entries list (Slovenia) will tell us a lot.

FWIW, Lindsay Thorngren said in her Courchevel winner's interview with Ted Barton that she would be getting a 2nd assignment but she hesitated when he asked her if she knew where... probably (my guess) because she already knew she likely was going to be shifted from #3 Kosice to a later JGP.

JGP Krasnoyarsk entries have also been udpated:

Junior Men
ADDED 8 Oleg Melnikov KAZ
REMOVED 5 Denis GURDZHI GER
REMOVED 15 Andreas NORDEBACK SWE

Junior Women
REMOVED 7 Dora HUS GER
REMOVED 18 Weronika FERLIN POL

No changes to either Pairs or Dance.

Similar for Wolfkostin/Chen: they said they were expecting a second assignment but weren't allowed to talk about it as it hadn't been announced yet.

Flores/Tsarevski being pulled from Kosice seems a bit odd but perhaps USFS wants to give them the same second assignment as their training mates Neset/Markelov or else there's some other logistical reason why back to back assignments weren't going to work.

I'm not sure we can read all that much into the US assignments re: whether or not the JGPF has been cancelled or the ISU will be using highest scores, etc, especially for our women. We have so many great junior women right now that it's going to be impossible for all of them to get 2 assignments. For example - is anyone else surprised that Kanon Smith hasn't received an assignment yet? I think, after the Skate Milwaukee Jr Cup, the conventional wisdom was she would get 2 assignments (along with Levito, Kalin, Thorngren and Seo) but so far, nothing.

I'm more interested in why the USFS hasn't assigned any pairs to Kosice or Krasnoyarsk and why we only had 1 dance team listed (and no alternates, IIRC) for Kosice.
