Watching today’s short program in pairs from Poland, I love the Ukraine team, although he looks like he should be well into seniors, he has to be in his mid to late 20s no?
ISU raised the maximum ISU Junior male pair partner's age to 23 this season. Artem DARENSKYI (born July 7, 2001) is 23 now.

ETA: Sofiia HOLICHENKO will be 20 in November. The maximum ISU Junior female pair partner's age is 21 now, with a maximum age gap of 7 years being allowed between the pair partners.

I mean, waxed mustache that curls on the ends, a beard. And a key to the harem.

Listening to Mark right now. Oh so this was just a one off? They’re just doing this competition for Feedback?
Was it not clear from what Mark said during the commentary about their reasons for doing the JGP?

They've had very little training time due to a lack of rink/ice access in Ukraine over the summer, plus she had to break in new boots unexpectedly last month.

Yes, Holichenko/Darenskiy are very much a senior team at this point but seeing as Sierova/Khobta have ended their partnership and HolDar are eligible for Jr comps due to the age increase, it made more sense for them to give themselves an extra week of training time and enter this JGP to get 1) a SB, 2) earn some WS points, and 3) earn the CTES mins for Jr Worlds rather than try and get themselves ready for Nebelhorn last week.

I doubt, very much, that they need feedback on their SP since they kept it from last season. I'm not sure if they also kept their FS from last season but given the minimal training time they've had, that may very well be the case also.

Yeah Gürl go to sleep. I even edited my post with Mark’s commentary.

Regardless, and of course I know what’s going and the limited ice time I just didn’t know if what looks to be approaching 28 years old they would let you in to the junior Grand Prix. Did not know he was 23.

Switzerland clearly picked up their 2nd spot at JGP #5 from Georgia relinquishing a spot. I'm not sure why Italy picked up their 2nd spot at JGP #7 unless the ISU just forgot to re-allocate one of the spots Georgia relinquished earlier and tried to make it up by giving Italy 2 spots in China, but it doesn't quite make sense that the 3rd spot Georgia did not use wouldn't have also been reallocated to the USA as they were next in line. Regardless, for the Women, all but 1 spots assigned to Groups A, B & C were used and there's really not much to quibble over (at least, not from my US POV since our women have been so abysmal this year that I'm not sure we really warranted an 8th spot).

So, GBR and SUI each had 1 spot they didn't use, but they had enough teams to potentially decide they needed/wanted to use all of those spots - I'm fine with giving them a pass for not using them because they're not the reason why Italy didn't pick up a 2nd spot at 6 of the 7 JGPs - that's clearly on Cyprus for not relinquishing their spots. I can even give Germany a pass for not relinquishing their spots in Thailand & China because that wouldn't have impacted Italy not picking up additional spots at those 2 JGPs had Cyprus followed Israel's lead and relinquished their spots for reallocation.

Of course, it's always possible that Italy said they wouldn't need any additional spots beyond the 7 they earned but that seems unlikely since they were glad to pick up the 2nd Women's spot and Italy has 5 dance teams listed as entries or substitutes, so I have to believe they'd have gladly accepted 3 extra spots at any of the JGPs Cyprus originally had.

All in all, apart from Cyprus - most of the countries came pretty close to utilizing all of their assigned & reallocated dance spots - and it's a shame Cyprus didn't because Italy would have benefited.

If that became a common practice, I would support increasing the spots from 7 to 10 for 4th-6th best countries. Actually, I’d support that anyway. :)
I just re-read this and... Let's think here...

Countries 4-6 increased to 10 spots with the opportunity to pick up 1 additional spot for the 4 remaining JGPs where they only have 1 spot during reallocation - adds a total of 9 extra spots overall.
Additionally, countries 7-10 are increased to 7 spots total, also with the opportunity to pick up 1 additional spot for each JGP - adds a total of 4 extra spots overall.

That increases the # of spots by 13 total - 2 per JGP. How would that impact the overall #s of entries per discipline in Men, Women & Ice Dance?

Looking over the JGP General Announcement - currently, the max # of entrants for a JGP, if every country used ALL their spots assigned is:

Men -
JGP China - 42
JGP Thailand, Slovenia - 41x2 = 82+1+1 = 84
JGP Latvia, Czechia, Turkey - 40x3 = 120+2+2+2 = 126
JGP Poland - 39+3 = 42

That adds 11 of the 13 new spots, so 2 of the JGPs would need to take on the burden of, potentially, an 8th warm-up group, plus the practice time, etc - you can probably offset for that by putting those two assignments with the non-European JGPs where the actual # of participants is always lower than at the European JGPs.

Women -
JGP Slovenia, China - 42
JGP Czechia, Thailand, Turkey, Poland - 40x4 = 160+2+2+2+2 = 168
JGP Latvia - 39+3 = 42

Same issue as the men - That adds 11 of the 13 new spots, so 2 of the JGPs would need to take on the burden of, potentially, an 8th warm-up group, plus the practice time, etc - you can probably offset for that by putting those two assignments with the non-European JGPs where the actual # of participants is always lower than at the European JGPs.

Ice Dance -
JGP Slovenia, China - 39
JGP Thailand, Poland - 38x2 = 76+2+2 = 80
JGP Latvia, Czechia - 37x2 = 74+3+3 = 80
JGP Turkey - 36+4 = 40

Adding 13 spots would not, at this time, cause any increase to the maximum # of warm-up groups required for any JGP.

I know there are other additional financial & time burdens involved with adding to the # of spots overall, but I do think it's something the ISU should consider. Ultimately, none of the JGPs have wound up with more than 38 skaters in Women, 30 in Men or 23 in Ice Dance, so the actual financial & time burdens for all of the JGPs have been lower than what is required when submitting a bid to host one.

With new federations being added every couple of years and smaller countries starting to develop more skaters and using their allotted spots, aren't they going to have to increase their spots at some point? (I think all federations are guaranteed spots in JGP?)

I don't recall it ever being this difficult to predict who the qualifiers will be for the Jr. Grand Prix Final. After 5 events I'd say that it is still pretty wide open for the, IMO, remaining 4 slots in each of the men's and women's fields. In years past, I'm usually able to predict 4 qualifiers with the last 2 events determining the last 2 slots among 2 or 4 entries. This season it seems like the standings list can still be really shaken up!!

Your thoughts...

The FFSG is being just as mercenary with their JGP spots as the USFS is. Dapoigny was replaced by Milena Mozeiko for China next week and Medard is off the entries list entirely, so no 2nd JGP for him. France had 7 spots for Men initially and has wound up not using 2 of them.

Perrier Gianesini/Blanc Klaperman and Nguyen/Giang need to win. They would go to 24 points and with a 1st place they would win the tiebreaker against the Mullens and the Peals (who would be at best at 24 with a 2nd and 3rd place).

If Peals win, they are qualified. 11+15=26 points
If they finish 2nd, they would need 165.04 to win a tiebreaker against the Mullens. But they would need someone other than Perrier/Blanc and Nguyen/Giang winning in Wuxi, otherwise 2nd place would be not enough.

Ted Barton’s clip from the rink built inside the Wuxi Taihu International Expo Center:

ETA that I just noticed that all the federations hosting a JGP have this sentence in their respective Announcements - from the one for Wuxi:

"The organizer will provide and cover the expenses for rooms and meals for all Competitors and Judges
participating, beginning with dinner on Tuesday October 8, 2024 until breakfast on Sunday, October 13,

Anthony Paradis's 22-minute vlog about his Riga JGP experience (includes appearances by his Canadian teammates and Flores/Wang): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbZmBOyMTLk
Since I previously shared his first vlog in this thread, here's his second one - "Two months late... but still us twirling through gdansk" JGP vlog by Anthony Paradis (20 mins.) that also features his Canadian teammates Lulu Lin, Edward Vasii, Julia Quattrocchi/Simon Desmarais, Noemie Rolland/Etienne Lacasse, Sandrine Gauthier/Quentin Thieren & Summer Homick/Nicholas Buelow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1TbuNpHOuo
Near the end of the video (after the 16-min. mark) he talks about how he coped with anxiety when he couldn't fall asleep.

I'm really looking forward to the JGP Final in Grenoble! According to the colored schedule:

Thursday, December 5, 2024: Junior Pairs/Women/Rhythm Dance;
Friday, Dec. 6: Junior Men SP & Junior Women FS;
Saturday, Dec. 7: Junior Men FS, Jr. Free Dance & Jr. Women FS & Jr. Pairs FS.
