FSU Watch Party Sunday #1: 1991 Worlds part 2 [12pm CDT/6pm CET]

I think they were being rewarded for their brilliant 1990 Worlds FD performance at this Worlds especially after Klimova/Ponomarenko left an opening and seemed a bit distracted at this Worlds.

I find Duchesnays’ technical content is really low.
Martini is trying to be polite by saying “I don’t know how this will stack up against the Russians”.

The European commentator laughing at the 5.4 from the French judge for G and P reminded me of how heavily entrenched blocked judging was in ice dance back then.

Ice dance now is way more athletic no question and requires more skating skills showcased. But it doesn’t have the intricacy and partnering nor the close holds past ice dance has. You’ll see it more with Klimova/Ponomarenko’ free dances pre-Albertville.

To outsiders, it must seem a bit silly to see a bunch of Eastern Euros dominating a competition evaluating one’s ability to dance to the blues.

I’m having a flashback while watching these Canadian teams of when Bourne and Kratz arrived at nationals and beat them all and how upset they were that B and K had not respected the wait-multiple-Olympic-cycles-until-it’s-your-turn ice dance hierarchy

Your comment about two foot skating made me think about the fluff piece of Renee Roca and Gorsha Sur teaming up. They asked Gorsha why didn’t she train the Russian way instead of him training the American way, and she made some snarky comment about well we could do it the Russian way and skate on flats and just emote with our arms and faces.
