Chinese Skating News, Pt. 3: A long & winding road to Beijing 2022

In all fairness, obviously the Chinese team has a budget and they have to make decisions accordingly. I don't know how much that played into things here. Paying for Chinese skaters to live and train in Canada for 5-6 weeks is a significant expense, for sure.
True...but they can reach out to skating contacts they have as far as locating ice time for them in Toronto area and bring everyone together in a few BNB's close at hand. It is a 45min plane ride to MTL right b4 Worlds or rent a bus and driver for the 5hr drive to MTL.

It does appear that they farmed out selected skaters to different training areas to avoid the mandated quarantine. I really wish they could have managed to do that for all of the skaters. I wonder where Hongbo is. How can you effectively coach your athletes when they are in three different countries?

Because they're not his athletes, Han Yan is on Pang/Tong's National team. Sui/Han and Boyang went to Toronto, Peng/Jin are in SK for 2 weeks after 4CC and will supposedly join them in Canada later. Wang/Liu back to Montreal. Nobody else went.

The problem with all this is that in Canada many places are asking you self quarantine if you've just come back from China or are in close contact with someone who just came from China so even if he gets to Canada after his quarantine we don't know if he'll be asked to stay inside for 2 weeks or if he can find a place to train. There are currently no cases in Quebec and I'm sure they'd like to keep it that way.

Chinese Juniors are unable to attend Junior Worlds due to the outbreak and even if they were able to, because everyone is being asked to stay inside, the training centres in Beijing are not open so they're probably not in competition shape.

Well, this just got complicated. As a pairs fan, I'm glad Sui/Han will be definitely okay, but I'm nervous for the others. I'm really hoping Peng/Jin are cleared to go too - they really have a shot at bagging a World medal this year and I would hate to see them miss out because of something stupid like this. Obviously taking precautions to avoid spreading the virus comes first, but it would totally suck if they got caught in the crossfire.

There is a rumor that Peng/Jin did not go back to China. Instead they are staying in Korea, training in an Incheon rink.

Hate to say it, but it sounds like the A team for Worlds (Sui/Han, Jin) got taken care of, while the C team got the "hope for the best" treatment (as in, return to China and hopeyoumakeit to Worlds).

Peng/Jin seem to be in the middle (B team status?), as I saw a report somewhere that they were staying in Korea for 2 weeks after 4CCs.
Seems sensible to me. It must be expensive to send them over.

The entries for Worlds are online.

No Han Yan for Worlds :(

OTOH Hongyi Chen gets to go, and there are 3 pairs listed.

There are currently 2 pairs and 1 lady (Yi Zhu who trains in USA) listed for JWC.

There were updates in the American news yesterday that spread of the CV to the U.S. (and thus, globally) is seen as inevitable, and that everyone should be taking precautions and preparing. :( :saint:

Shen and Zhao disliked him so much and try to block him by all means.
Yan was told by Shen and Zhao after 2018 Olympic he should transfer to be an Ice dancer, otherwise, he would not gain any fund from the sports authority. Yan was against their will and intended to retire but Pang and Tong invited him to skate in their rinks. But Pang and Tong can not support him for a long time due to lack of the fund, Yan had to leave but Shen and Zhao didn’t let him train in their rink. Therefore, Yan doesn't have the rink to train and even get the chance to compete in WC because he is labelled as an "unwelcomed person" by SZ.
Anyone still holds a beautiful memory for SZ, plz remove them. SZ are evils and have a stinky reputation among Chinese skating fans.

Yeah, I remember the interview where Yan said he had no support from his coaches/federation, and some were even actively undermining him.

Trust me, after what Zhao and the Chinese fed did to Yu and Jin, I'm already there.

S/Z are my favorite pair of all time and I don't think I can remove my beautiful memories of them. I have watched their Turnadot about 100 times and am still almost in tears every time.

But I am really sorry to learn that they tried to block Han Yan - makes me lose respect for them. Anyone know exactly why?

Can you add Peng to that list? Her gorilla partner was trying to break every bone in her body and he plus Zhao treated her like garbage. When they did the switchover she was being discarded. There was no way they expected Peng/Jin to be such a great pair and so loved by fans.

Yan Han did publicly complain about how he was treated. That said no one knows the details.

I often don’t find speculations to be in the mark

sigh .. it all sounds tragic. if only the truth can be known.

i tend to feel for han yan and hope that he can find happiness ... whatever he decides to do.

to be honest apart from boyang jin they don't really have anyone. so why don't they give han yan another chance?
It is almost criminal. He should have been sent right to Canada right after 4cc.He was in Korea for a few wks before the competition so he would not have been quarantined in Canada- just checked out.

2 yrs ago, The Chinese sports authority divided the whole Chinese figure skating team into 3 separate teams leading by S/Z, P/T and Lu Chen. SZ for sure still kept the top tier of the skaters, PT led the second tier of the skaters and Lu Chen led the naturalized skaters(Beverly Zhu, Ashley Lin). It was not an afterthought for PT to invite Yan Han to skate, they truly wanted him to continue and tried very hard to re-boost his confidence and career. PT helped Yan to find a new choreographer, Yuka Sato and Kurt Browning; and helped Yan to sign the top sports agent in mainland China.

But everything changed last year, the authority changed the plan, and Shen and Zhao gained the whole power again. P/T and Lu Chen were no longer holding the title of "the national teams". Suddenly, the fund for P/T was stripped away by the authority, and P/T could not support Yan Han any more financially. Yan has to leave and doesn't have a rink to train until now.

All the shitty things should date back to 2017-2018. S/Z wanted to ensure a gold medal in the 2018 Olympic and tried to adapt the new managing style and policy for the whole team(Honestly, they just wanted to put all the resources for Sui and Han to win a gold medal in the 2018 Olympic). Yan was originally going to LA to train under Rafael arranged by his previous coach Li Ming Zhu, but It had to suspend due to the S/Z's policy. During the Olympic season, Yan compromised and trained with the pair teams with no coach for the sake of obedience to the leaders(S/Z).

Yan was not the only victim under the S/Z's management, Shiyue Wang and Liu Xinyu were also the victims too. They were trained oversea before the 2018 Olympic but had to stop by the decision of S/Z. They suddenly had no coach at that time and even got a cheap choreographer even do not know the technical requirements of the Ice dance ORGANISED BY S/Z AGAIN.

After the 2018 Olympic, Yan demanded that He should go to LA to train under Rafael but was rejected by S/Z. S/Z insulted him like "You are not good enough, we don't want to waste the money." On the other hand, S/Z wanted to please their local provincial sports authority and counterbalance the rival ones, THEY WANTED TO SPLIT W/L, WHO ARE FROM THE RIVAL SPORTS AUTHORITY, AND FORCED YAN HAN TO PAIR UP WITH SHIYUE WANG! Yan was strongly against their plan and intended to retire at the time. This is how the shitty things going to Yan

I didn't say that Han Yan was an afterthought. I said the Pang/Tong were the original afterthoughts, ie treated by the Chinese Fed as afterthoughts -- left alone and in another city, with Tong having to coach them himself, treated as second class at least until they were useful -- so they would empathize with Han Yan's situation and support him, knowing what being in that position is like.

That sounds so awful. I feel so sorry for Han Yan. It would have been such a good thing for him to have been allowed to train with Raf. This is a sad and disgraceful way to treat so talented a skater. There are truly no words for such treatment. :(

I hope Han Yan does not give up and that he can find a way. Maybe fans can help by sending messages of support to Han Yan.

Well it would be too little too late for worlds. He is in a punitive country where you are punished for having any desires not allotted to you. He cannot move to another country to train without their permission(never mind $)as they would refuse to give him assignments. Also they do not only punish you but your family. So he is really between a rock and a hard place. I wonder if he would pay for any attention drawn to him. I hope I am wrong. Does anyone in the know feel there is anything people can do?

I guess the only thing that can be done is to send him words of encouragement.

I feel disgusted about the system, and believe what has been said about the things going on behind the scenes. The problems are so entrenched and I just hope that the whole thing will be shaken and there will be changes (but dunno when that will ever happen).

I had thought things might have loosened up in China with the Federation sending skaters outside of China for skating and even with Brian Orser coming in on the off season to work with the kids with members of his team and some of his students but really?. I watched Cup of China...pairs....as my fav pair anything is Lubov. This has absolutely nothing to do with their placements or scores etc. in fact I thought the judging was really good. They were rewarded with levels where deserved and good GOE's. Silver was theirs to throw away.......and they did. The problem is the crowd. The stands were packed. On one element you could hear a few claps, on the rest absolute silence. I thought at least there would be some reaction to their last lift...which is sensational...but you could easily count the claps. Peng and Jin who skated third to last had polite moderate applause here and there, louder on a few spectacular elements...then Lubov and Charlie- crickets...then Sui/Han...who did get good applause on each move and a little bit of excitement even on some elements but nothing compared to what it should have been for the best in the world on their home ice. It shook me. It was like someone was holding up a banner saying Clap and another Stop. How do you control people like that? Something in the water? Punitive actions? Threats? I really don't get it. Clip starts with Sui/Han...lubov skated right before it.

Moving this to the relevant thread before responding.

The stupid and mean decision was to send any of the 4cc competiters back to China. If someone who was allowed to talk had reached out I am sure they would have been looked after. With the large figure skating community and huge Chinese community in Canada.

But are you sure the skating community has the power to dictate travel arrangements in this type of scenario? I mean Misha couldn't even get his visa arrangements settled to get him to France for a GP in ordinary circumstances, and these are not ordinary circumstances. Some of the Chinese athletes have been to Canada more recently than others, which probably helped. I'm honestly glad that any of them made it out of China in order to get to Worlds. I am sad for Yan Han but it could have been much worse. I'm still crossing my fingers for a few of the athletes that were named to Worlds but whom we don't yet have confirmation are actually outside of China. Also, it is worth noting that China chose Han Yan to compete at Cup of China this season, and they sent him to 4CCs, which they do not always do with athletes.

Someone here explained that when he competed for Uzbekistan, Ge had to travel with an Uzbeki passport with an entry visa to the competition country, which is why he had constant visa issues that he would not have had with a passport from China or Russia. As a choreographer, he can travel on any of his passports.
