2019 Oscars Red Carpet & Ceremony - All Awards Lead To Roma

They should have just closed the carpet after Billy Porter.

On my “what were you thinking list” so far... Melissa McCarthy and Glenn Close.

Where is Yalitza Aparicio from? I don’t mean just the nationality. On the red carpet they introduced her as the first indigenous actress to be nominated.

ETA - I loved Melissa McCarthy’s dress.

For my TV, love Gemma Chan’s pink dress with pockets, but all the pics I’ve seen so far make it look like she’s wearing a pink cotton tent.

This poster hopes that at least one leads to "The Wife" (its only nomination).

The one for Best Song can lead to "A Star is Born"'s nomination in that category so that all the "Little Monsters" and other fans of one of its writers can celebrate.

Other than that, I don't care much (oddly enough, the title of a song recorded long ago by a previous Oscar recipient for Best Song from a version of ASIB).

Strange, my mom and I both felt that "Shallow" was one of the weaker songs in ASIB
Amandla Stenberg looked lovely

ETA - I loved Melissa McCarthy’s dress.
Her parents are from indigenous Mexican background, her dad is Mixtec and her mom is Triqui according to her Wikipedia page.

What time does the Oscar ceremony start? 6 pm MST or 7 pm MST?

ETA- it starts at 6 pm here. So I have to skip the gym tonight.

Glenn Close’s Golden dress reminded me of Meryl Streep’s golden dress when she won her third Oscar.
It has 4 million beads and it weighs 42 pounds!

I’m disappointed Kendrick Lamar won’t be performing his song from Black Panther. It probably would have injected some life into the broadcast. I hope Spike Lee is the surprise winner for Best Director as I think that could be quite a moment, but I think it’ll probably be another well-deserved win for Cuaron.

This year has been a bit ho-hum for me in terms of quality of films but since I watched almost all the Best Pic nominees and all of the nominees for Acting, etc. I'm more invested.

I'm going to give what I'm hoping for in terms of wins in bold:

BEST PICTURE

Roma
Green Book
Black Panther
The Favourite
Bohemian Rhapsody
A Star is Born
BlacKkKlansman
Vice

But I would also love it if The Favourite or BlacKkKlansman won.

BEST ACTOR

Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
Christian Bale, Vice
Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
Willem Dafoe, At Eternity's Gate

Don't really care. I think Cooper was actually really good in A Star is Born. Bale seems very impressive. Malek will win anyway. I wish Ethan Hawke had been nominated for First Reformed.

BEST ACTRESS

Glenn Close, The Wife
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Lady Gaga, A Star is Born
Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma

Close, Colman, and McCarthy are all award-worthy and I'd be happy with anyone of them winning, but my heart belongs to Close.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me
Adam Driver, BlacKKKlansman
Sam Rockwell, Vice
Sam Elliot, A Star is Born

I'm all for Richard E. Grant.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Amy Adams, Vice
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
Marina de Tavira, Roma

I'd be happy with any of these nominees winning except Amy Adams and Emma Stone.

BEST DIRECTOR

Alfonso Cuaron, Roma
Spike Lee, BlacKKKlansman
Adam McKay, Vice
Pawel Pawlikowski, Cold War
Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite

Cuaron deserves it, but if Lee or Lanthimos pulls off an upset, I'd be happy too.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

First Reformed, Paul Schrader
Green Book, Nick Vallelonga, Brian Hayes Currie, Peter Farrelly
Roma, Alfonso Cuaron
The Favourite, Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara
Vice, Adam McKay

I want First Reformed to win but The Favourite is also amazing.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

BlacKkKlansman, Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, Kevin Willmott, Spike Lee
Can You Ever Forgive Me, Nicole Holofcener, Jeff Whitty
If Beale Street Could Talk, Barry Jenkins
A Star is Born, Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper, Will Fetters
Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Joel and Ethan Coen

I can't pick one. BlacKkKlansman, Can You Ever Forgive Me, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Ballad of Buster Scruggs were all great adaptions and have screenplays that did their jobs.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Roma
Cold War
A Star is Born
Never Look Away
The Favourite

Roma's cinematography was breathtaking.

EDITING

Bohemian Rhapsody
The Favourite
BlackKklansman
Vice
Green Book

I thought BlacKkKlansman did the best job editing the scenes and overall narrative. Everything flowed well.

PRODUCTION DESIGN

Black Panther
The Favourite
Mary Poppins Returns
Roma
First Man

I don't feel that strongly about this category as no production design really wowed me among these nominees. But The Favourite had such a distinct look. I don't know how much of it was design or preexisting rooms. I get skeptical with these British historical pieces.

SOUND MIXING

A Star is Born
First Man

Black Panther
Bohemian Rhapsody
Roma

SOUND EDITING

First Man
Roma
Black Panther
A Quiet Place
Bohemian Rhapsody

I think editing the sound for a genre film like A Quiet Place is more difficult than the others and the movie was all about sound since the characters weren't allowed to talk so every sound was important.

COSTUME DESIGN

Black Panther
Buster Scruggs
Mary Poppins Returns
The Favourite
Mary Queen of Scots*

The Favourite hands down.

VISUAL EFFECTS

First Man
Ready Player One
Avengers: Infinity War
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Christopher Robin

No opinion.

ORIGINAL SCORE

Black Panther
Mary Poppins Returns
Isle of Dogs
If Beale Street Could Talk
BlacKkKlansman

ORIGINAL SONG

Shallow from A Star is Born
I'll Fight from RBG
Where Lost Things Go from Marry Poppins Returns
When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
All The Stars from Black Panther

This is all about how a song actually fits in the movie, plus a bit about the quality of the song itself. To me "Shallow" fit the film and served the film more than any other and hit the climax well. However, I love the Buster Scruggs song.

MAKEUP AND HAIR

Vice
Mary Queen of Scots
Border

Christian Bale was unrecognizable and looked so much like Cheney without looking too make-upy. Looked natural.

ANIMATED FEATURE

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Ralph Breaks the Internet
Mirai

IMO, Spider-Man was one of my top 4 films of the year.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

RBG
Free Solo
Hale County This Morning, This Evening
Minding the Gap
Of Fathers and Sons

I really want Minding the Gap to win.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FEATURE

Roma (Mexico)
Cold War (Poland)
Capernaum (Lebanon)
Shoplifters (Japan)
Germany, Never Look Away

Roma is going to win no doubt. But I'd be happy if Cold War or Shoplifters win.

LIVE ACTION SHORT

Mother
Skin
Detainment
Fauve
Marguerite

Did not see any of them.

DOCUMENTARY SHORT

Period. End of Sentence.
Black Sheep
End Game
Lifeboat
A Night at the Garden

Did not see any of them.

ANIMATED SHORT

Late Afternoon
Animal Behaviour
Bao
One Small Step
Weekends

I saw all of them and I think Bao deserves it.

Just goes to show how much you Hate BR. You won’t give it a single award.

For cinematography I was picking Roma earlier but after seeing ‘Never look away’ I thought it was very deserving too.

Bao was my choice too in the animated short.

Live action short - All were so tragic (except one). All deserving. ‘Skin’ or ‘Fauve’ May win. Both were horrifying at the end.

anyone got streaming info for those of us without tv? :saint:

I'm pretending I'm in Australia right now so I can watch the Oscars because CTV doesn't have livestreaming without an a cable provider.
