The fact that TAT, Trankova and several others, after the Olympics, publicly announced "they wanted Med to win, sorry Alina, nobody was cheering for you" did not help at all, nor the media, nor few other people's actions.
However, there is not need to feel sorry for Zag or find excuses. She did mess up 4 jumps in this FS, which she did just fine in practice. Nobody can help her with nerves, but she herself. I don't see a very big tragedy, all season long she is either in 1st or 2nd place (Russian nationals she was 2nd among seniors). She is one of the few ladies to skate the next season after Olympic gold, and she is staying in 1st and 2nd places.
Understandable, she is only 16, but if one starts "playing in the game" for top medals and placements, one should learn to handle the media and fan pressure. If she and her agents are smart, she'll figure out how to use all of this to "cement herself".
(I am so happy Samodurova will be on the world team... for my own reasons).
