NBR tends to be the most mainstream out of the critics' groups. To get a sense of their tastes, they never met a Clint Eastwood movie they did not want to award in the past decade or so.

Also, the Gothams announced their winners. Each category is chosen by independent and separate five-member juries and they only reward independent cinema. They are like the Spirit Awards but are NYC-based as opposed to LA-based.

Wow, first time in a long time that 4 movies I’ve seen or plan to see someday made the list for Best Picture.

I'm a bit confused over A Star is Born and even Bohemian Rhapsody's categorization in the Drama field considering similar films with music have been nominated in the Musical/Comedy category. I guess the Hollywood Foreign Press Association just takes the studio's categorization and don't question it, though they put Portman in lead (and she failed to get nominated) when the studio has been campaigning for her as a Supporting Actress in Vox Lux. I guess this categorization is part of both films' Oscar campaign strategy as winning an award in Drama may weigh more heavily than Musical/Comedy.

I'm really excited for Constance Wu getting nominated for Crazy Rich Asians, I will admit I'm a tiny bit disappointed she wasn't nominated for Fresh Off The Boat because she's amazing in that and does not get enough recognition for it. But getting recognition for CRA is good too.

Also I am 1000% here for Olivia Colman winning as many awards as possible even though I have no idea when I'll get to see The Favourite. I've just been a huge fan of hers for so long.

Honestly, this is probably the strongest and most congested Best Actress race in a very long time. There are seriously like nineteen (19) women who have received major nominations at other awards going into this race.

Is it just me or does anyone else not understand why Black Panther is hailed as such a fantastic movie. IMO it's no better than any other Marvel movie, but people have been pushing it for awards season for months. I just don't get it, and the colour of the characters skin and taking place in Africa (which is all many people focus on) isn't enough of a reason IMO to regard it so much more highly than others.

I didn't think that movie nor Logan last year was worth the hype that it received to get awards attention honestly. But since so many people loved it and it resonated for them, maybe I'm the one missing something. Also, I do think there is something to be said about NOT ignoring the context of why people are celebrating this movie. IMO, race and socio-political messages are important parts of storytelling IF that is the kind of story so the movie may be weighty for people because of those things. On the other side, I remember talking to some colleagues and friends who are from various African countries saying they disliked the movie for portraying Africa, in general, in a certain light and how it make people in this country all excited about a fantasy version of Africa rather than be show any interest with real African countries.

I just feel like the skin colour and location aren't enough of a reason to praise a movie so much. Yes, it's fantastic that representation is out there, but those are the only two things that I hear people praising for the movie. Technical awards I'd understand completely (costuming, sound, editing, effects, etc.) but the actual movie... no way at all.

It's subjective. A movie that people love that much probably worked for them on aspects that we may find lacking. The race and skin color and location are very important and should not be dismissed as it's part of the storytelling of this movie. That said, there have been write ups by passionate fans that go beyond that while recognizing the importance of the representation. Some argue Oscars have been rewarding movies for portraying stories for reasons that may read as superficial as skin color (if one thinks that's superficial) but are couched in other terminology and deal with themes voters care about because it relates to them personally (age, a powerful man learning to use his voice, etc.), so why not allow an awarding body to recognize a movie's achievement in racial representation? Plus, on the other side, people argue that Oscars don't reward "popular" movies enough and that Best Picture shouldn't only mean only awarding things that critics and cinephiles love. Black Panther isn't really winning or topping (or even included) in many critics lists so there's that.

So Kevin Hart was selected to host the Oscars. Then old tweets of him making homophobic comments surfaced (he's referred to them as jokes. They are not jokes). He gave a non-apology (the old 'sorry you were offended' style thing), claims he's apologized before (non apologies, basically just saying when he made the 'jokes' people were less sensitive... similar to 'when I assaulted that woman, that's just what people did'), refused to apologize when the Academy gave him an ultimatum, and has now stepped down as host. (He offered an apology after the fact).

All within 2 days.

So I'm predicting a member (or members) of the LGBT community as the new host. I think Billy Eichner would be fun (and on Twitter he seems interested). Or they could get NPH again. RuPaul would be fun (just imagine the costume changes!)

I love that Hugh Grant is getting recognized for Paddington 2 (he was also nominated for a BAFTA earlier this year). Not only is it kind of hilarious, but having seen the film, he actually is pretty brilliant in it. The ending scene alone is worth it (spoilers for those who haven't seen Paddington 2)

Some people (Kevin Kline is one) have said that "this was just the style of comedy then". Shouldn't we be cutting a lot of men some slack then as women were "just treated differently" back in the day as well.

There are lots of comedians who have never used homophobia, racism, misogyny of anti-Semitism as a way to get a laugh/make a buck.

Yep!!!
Kevin's may have been 'comedy' but his was pure homophobia - saying he'd smash things over his son's head if he did 'gay things', and that as a straight man, his biggest fear was his son being gay. Yeah, not comedy. He also refused to apologize, initially just saying things like "I wouldn't make those comments today", then when asked to apologize last week, saying 'I've already addressed it.' Yeah, you mentioned you'd said those things, but there was no apology to the LGBTQ+ community.

Nick Cannon recently commented on comedians Amy Schumer, Chelsea Handler, and Sarah Silverman using the slur f*g or f*ggot in some tweets, and how they aren't being criticized like Kevin was. Yes, use of slurs is completely wrong, absolutely. However their comments were not based in homophobia and as an attack.

There's some speculation that they might go to Ellen Degeneres for host. She's not 'problematic', has successfully hosted before, and is a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Anyway, I'm going to start campaigning now for Hugh Grant as best supporting actor for Paddington 2. Seriously, if you haven't seen it yet, go see it! I'm not being facetious when I say that it's his best performance in years!!!

I posted this in the other movie thread, but I felt this video montage fit this one as well and I just wanted to reshare what I felt was an excellent montage of the year in film put together by Indiewire critic David Ehrlich :

https://vimeo.com/304064569

I look forward to his montages every year. I love how he skillfully edits the scenes in the montage that does not always include films included in his top favorites but were memorable enough to be included in the opening montage that is later followed by a countdown of his personal 25 favorite films of the year. I love that Paddington 2 is sitting at number 2 sandwiched between First Reformed and Madeline's Madeline.

For the list without watching the video:

https://www.indiewire.com/2018/12/d...ies-2018-video-compilation-edit-1202024765/2/

1. First Reformed
2. Paddington 2
3. Madeline’s Madeline
4. Shoplifters
5. The Tale
6. Burning
7. Mission Impossible: Fallout
8. If Beale Street Could Talk
9. Wildlife

13. Hereditary
14. Suspiria
15. Support the Girls
16. Eighth Grade
17. Roma
18. Annihilation
19. Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda

Any "best movies of 2018" list that doesn't include Bohemian Rhapsody is not credible to me. Yes, the movie had a flaw or two, but the acting was EXCELLENT (especially Rami Malek) and the last 20 minutes alone were worth the price of admission. I felt like standing up and applauding at the end, and not many movies make me feel that way these days.

Looking forward to seeing that film. Love Hugh Grant - such a fine comedic actor, and I've always thought he was rather brilliant (love him in 'About a Boy' and 'Love, Actually').

I can't wait until The Favourite starts showing around here. I adore Olivia Colman. She has such an amazing range as an actress. She's hilarious and relatable, and can be heartbreaking as well. Such a complete performer.

And she seems so down to earth as well. One of my favorite moments of hers was her interview in the Graham Norton show when she was promoting The Night Manager with Hugh Laurie. She was seated next to Kevin Hart and the two of them had wonderful chemistry. Hart seemed totally enchanted by her. I would be, too.

I am with vgerdes on this. If this was a list of five best movies, I could understand BR missing out, but not even in the top 25? That is ridiculous when you see movies like MI (zillionth sequel?) and Widows listed. I have never heard of Many of these movies, and haven’t yet seen some others. Still BR deserves to be on the top 25 list.

I wouldn’t have put it in my top list either. I think it’s fine to disagree but to say it’s not credible because you would have put other movies in there is quite a statement and I find it to be a statement without merit. The lists I provided came from one film critic who just listed his personal top films and it’s his job to see every movie. He also saw BR and decided to leave it off the top list though he featured Queen’s music in the montage. I find that more credible than someone who didn’t watch many of the movies on his list but make a judgment about it anyway. The other list I provided was from Sight and Sound and were results of a poll conducted by 163 international critics and curators so that’s just the results they gave. I don’t see how it has no credibility.

I did point out two movies that did not belong there. Widows is one of them, and I have seen it. I gave it 6/10. IMO any version of MI does not belong on ‘best pictures’ list. May be the original did at the time it was released (I didn’t see it).

It’s fine if it is one person’s list. I disagree with some of his choices and some of his omissions. I do have the right to my opinion.
