Absolutely. Musicals can be dramatic. This is just pure and transparent Oscar campaign shenanigans, just like how some supporting performances are sort of lead performances.

It is Musical OR Comedy.
Anyway, I went to the Scottsdale International Film Festival today. I saw the Japanese movie 'Shoplifters'. It was very good. It got a bit boring in the second half, but it picked up quickly. Very touching, about human emotions, love, etc. The five year old girl is adorable. There is humor, worry, sadness, curiosity, Joy. We get to see some of Japanese culture. Before the movie started, someone welcomed us and then the president of the Japanese association in the valley addressed the audience.
Nicely developed suspense. Realistic and touching ending.
This is the first time I have been to any film festival. Very interesting experience. They gave us ballots at the door. After the movie we had to submit a rating for that movie, with 5 being Best and 1 being Worst. I gave it 5. I believe there ia an Audience Award at the end of the festival.
Imdb has 8.1 for this movie.
I bought a ticket to one of next Saturday's movies - Woman at war (Iceland). So once again, after my painting class I will go to that theatre. I wish it was not so far, or I might have seen a couple more movies. They are showing 'Boy Erased' late Sunday evening. It doesn't fit my schedule. I am sure I will get to see it in a regular movie theatre fairly soon. I saw the trailer yesterday.

I have been hearing great things about Bohemian Rhapsody. Organising to see it next Friday with friends.
I saw it yesterday. By far this is the best movie I have seen this year.

They keep playing commercials for this new "Grinch" cartoon on television. ZOMG, why bother? The Jim Carrey movie was awful, and this looks just as craptacular.

Going to see BR this afternoon. Just read the WaPo review and how can you not be intrigued by something described as "giddily entertaining", "the bad movie that works even when it shouldn’t", "pure, inexplicable pleasure", "....a bad movie. But boy, is it entertaining".

The worst movie I have seen so far this year is First Man, but critics are nominating it for Best Picture. It's all political.

Hello Destroyer is a recent drama about sports and how physical things can get. In this movie, we see an extreme example of this and how it has serious consequences for one young hockey player. I found this movie to be pretty good, but quite heavy in the subject matter.

That movie was filmed in my hometown. I kind of assumed it was going to be terrible based on the media coverage it got at the time.

I saw 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and loved it. Great music movie.
Yes I know the story is not accurate, but any biopic has inaccuracies, so I try to enjoy the film for film sake and highly recommend.
Also in general any movie based on real life that is recent/people involved are still alive - there is always criticism. But even historical movies of events hundreds of years ago have inaccuracies. One just has to ignore that, or don't watch them.
I thought Malek did a good job as Freddie, but something in the eyes distracted me on closeups.
I assume they glossed over issues within the band, but I do appreciate how it showed differences within the band but how they still cared about each other.
Hard to believe Live Aid was over 35 years ago - I remember turning the tv on late morning and ended up watching a big chunk of the day. And Freddie/Queen were the highlight! The movie brought me back to that day.
Each time I see Tom Holland I am growing to love him more and more as an actor.
On a side note - I read Bob Geldof's autobiography 'Is that It?' many years ago. Details on the planning of Live Aid was very interesting to say the least.

Just got back from Bohemian Rhapsody and totally enjoyed it! My immediate first thought was, I wanna see it again!!! Wow, what an ending! I thought the performances were all very good and the script kept things moving and never left me hanging. My husband's comment was that, while it wasn't exactly a good movie, it got better as it went on. He also said that it could have been the worst movie ever made and it would have been worth the price of admission to see the last 20 minutes.
I saw this at a theater in outer suburbia and though it was sold out, the audience wasn't as involved in the concert scene as much as I would have liked. My goal is to see it over and over at different theaters around Denver until I find one where everyone is grooving at the end.

IMO BR rises continuously and reaches the peak in the final concert (no surprise). Along the way I never felt that it got stuck anywhere (a common flaw in many movies this year). Since I don't know the real life story of Freddie Mercury and the band, I will avoid commenting on that. However, I can make a general comment that a feature film is not a documentary, and so it is ok to take a poetic license while telling a story. Also it is not possible to cram every detail in a roughly two hour movie.

I was 13 - I remember watching bits and pieces of it, mostly the U.S. concert but I think they included some scenes from London. But I don't remember Queen or any specific groups. I think I just wanted to see Madonna, lol.I saw the movie today - wow. I thought it was paced well, I wasn't bored. I didn't know much about Queen or Freddie Mercury's backstory other than what I read in the lead-up to the movie release. I would expect an Oscar nomination for Malek and the picture, probably the supporting cast too.

It depends on the movie. I may not want to see a movie because of a certain cast, but occasionally I may if I really like a particular actor/actress. If it us an independent or art film, there is a greater chance of my wanting to see it. Also the background of the movie is important to me.

About the second question, I do watch the NHL sometimes. Lately I gave been indifferent to Hockey and Sports in general (except FS of course).
I do care about violence in sports (and on the silver screen). So if this us the topic of the movie, I will be interested in watching it, regardless of the cast.

It is a hockey town, but it was more that production seemed really chaotic and disorganized.

In the case of some actors, I'll see a movie because they are in it and often, they don't disappoint. For example, I've never seen a film with Annette Bening or Joan Allen that I didn't like.
Saw Bohemian Rhapsody this weekend... I LOVED it. Rami Malek absolutely nailed his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, and deserves all the awards. The rest of the band members were spot on as well, IMO. In fact, I thought the casting in general was excellent. The best part is the music, of course — especially if you're a Queen fan, which I am — but even if you're only casually acquainted with their music, if you aren't fully engaged by the recreation of their Live Aid performance, you're probably dead. It's considered to be one of the very best live band performances of all time for a reason, and they did a stupendous job of recreating the excitement of it. And Freddie's story is, of course, heartbreaking, even if at least some of his descent into darkness was self inflicted. They didn't gloss over his homosexuality at all, though they did whitewash the band's rock & roll debauchery more than a bit (for instance, profanity is virtually nonexistent in this film, which is... unrealistic, to say the least). All in all, however, it was well worth the price of admission, IMO.

Boy Erased is the most-known movie of those included here, with many awards predicted by this film critic to take home the award. I saw 'Mid90s' today. It had 7.8 on imdb, so it looked like a safe bet. When the movie ended, I thought - this was really bad. Mercifully it was short (86 min).
It is about a 13 year old boy Stevie (he looks more like 10 or 11) and his older friends who are skateboarders. It is an escape from his miserable family life. He smokes, drinks, does drugs, and more, while enjoying the group. He feels a part of it. The movie is about his relationships, particularly with the skateboarders.
The movie does not have a real plot or a strong story. It is mostly about character and relationships, and the Mid90s era. In general I have no problem with that. In this movie though I could not connect with the story or the characters. I didn't think of the Mid90s as an era. It is too recent to be called an era.
After coming home I read the reviews on imdb and I was shocked by the raves the movie and its director (and screenwriter) Jonah Hill were getting. Many reviewers were men who were either teenagers or younger in the mid 90s, and they totally identified with the boy Stevie. Many said they were just like Stevie.
I have never been on a skateboard and I did not have the kind of problems these kids had. It doesn't mean I cannot enjoy a movie about people who are unlike me, but I simply did not enjoy this movie.
The positives- Everyone agrees that the background music and the young actor Sunny S. are outstanding. I think Jonah Hill did a good job as Director, because he got good performances out of the actors. The story or plot just didn't have enough material to make this a strong movie. 5/10.

- The Grinch trailer makes the movie look MUCH better than I expected. Not enough to add it to my To See list…but maybe your reviews will change my mind!
- Early in the trailer for Overlord is a mention of J.J. Abrams being a producer. Normally this would make me want to see the movie. But the trailer looks so over the top and violent…and not much else. So I’ll pass.

I've never been much into the whole Grinch story. I didn't even really want to watch the trailer. So I was surprised when it made me laugh about three different times. Maybe the short TV trailers excluded the funny bits that are in the full trailer?

Apparently the same studio will be in charge of rebooting Shrek. They are now owned by the same parent company when Dreamworks was bought out.

I like Lakeith Stanfield quite a lot; but Hollywood has done crap with the Stieg Larsson books so far.
I saw Tea with the Dames last night, an afternoon with Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright, and Eileen Atkins where they reminisce about their careers and lives. If you're a fan of these actresses, you'll love it. I could have used subtitles.

I've seen all the earlier movies, both the Swedish and English versions. I've enjoyed them all. But the trailers promoting the new movie don't look good. I'm finding that trailers (in general) for movies that have any kind of action just show lots of explosions, care chases, guns blasting...for two minutes straight. Which makes the movie look awful to me, that there's no story to be seen. So The Girl in the Spider's Web is not on my list. Hopefully some of you will see it and let me know if the trailer is just a ploy to get 14 year old boys into the theatre.
