2018 Summer TV New/Returning Shows

new t.v. ish - there's an article about how happy All My Children fans are that The Chew is being cancelled! ha ha (fyi - it's been in AMCs time slot since AMC was cancelled. Not that AMC is coming back; it's just the principle. We all said we would boycott it. I've seen parts of a couple shows in all these years, flipping channels.)

Even if hardly anyone watched The Chew, I'm pretty sure the network saved a lot of money looking at how many actors they had to pay for the soap and how many different sets they had to have. (I hadn't watched AMC for decades and neither did I see more than 10 minutes total of The Chew.)

Of course they did it to save money. AMC went off the air in 2011 so somebody must have been watching The Chew since then - just not AMC fans. I still have the last weeks' episodes of AMC in my DVR. Too sad to watch again though. The reboot that came back a couple years later was just not as good.

p.s. I never would have given a second thought to seeing that The Chew was cancelled. I didn't read the article. It was the headline on Yahoo, something about how All My Children fans would be happy, that caught my eye.

Anyone watching Elementary? Sherlock’s new friend Michael is pretty creepy.

Also, Dr. Jeff Rocky Mountain Vet is back on June 9!:cheer2::cheer2:

I've been watching Elementary. I really like the cast - the leads and Marcus and Aidan Quinn. Jonny Lee Miller is a delight. Very quirky, but nice entertainment. And I love Joan's wardrobe.
And yes the new friend is creepy and it will not be pleasant whatever will happen. I think I prefer just the case of the week and don't like the creppy long arc stories.
This past week- I liked that Joan's sister showed up and they are buddies. And her comment that Joan already has a child to take care of. hee hee.

I have never read Sherlock Holmes and know people that have and very picky about the various tv shows and movies.
I love the British tv show with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and I love the movies with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law. I think it is good I have not read the books - as I just enjoy all of them for the great acting and quirky characters and stories and mysteries - good buddy cop show.
If I had read the books - I would probably be picky too.

I have read all the Sherlock Holmes books, and I can watch Elementary - but only because I think of it as a mystery crime show, and not as a Sherlock Holmes show. I tend to be hit and miss with Elementary though - if I happen to be sitting down and watching tv when it is on, I watch it, but I don't make a point of watching every episode. I have not seen the Benedict Cumberbatch ones and I'm sure there are other versions out there I haven't see also. My person favourite and the one where I think the actor most embodies the Sherlock Holmes (as well as the actor who plays Watson) of the books is the British ITV series that stars Jeremy Brett & Edward Hardwicke.

Probably my favorite series this summer so far has been "Killing Eve." I always liked Sandra Oh and have become a fan of Jodi Comer. I liked Comer in "The White Princess" but love her performance in this series.

One other mention: In the last few months I have binged on "Last Tango in Halifax", "The Split", "River", and "Unforgotten." I don't know anything about Nicola Walker but she was prominent in each series. Is she a huge star in Britain?

It's been so hard for me, because I'm SO hooked on this show, and no one in my family or friends/co-workers watches it, so I've had no one I can talk to about it, and all of my paranoid theories and intrigues! At least my sister is going to binge watch it on her way to vacation in June!

Wednesday, May 30
12:01 a.m. PT - Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 4 - Netflix
12:01 a.m. PT - DALLAS & ROBO - YouTube Red
8 p.m. - MasterChef Season 9 - Fox (2-hour premiere)
8 p.m. - American Ninja Warrior Season 7 - NBC
10 p.m. - Running Wild With Bear Grylls Season 4 - NBC

I think that 10 PM listing is wrong. From everything that I've seen in the latest ads and commercials, I believe NBC is debuting that new show Reverie (Sarah Shahi stars in it) this coming Wednesday and not the Bear Grylls show which for me has all ready been airing on Monday nights. :)

Deception just had a great cliffhanger ending .... and now we'll never know cause the show got canceled. I loved that show!!! :wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed:wuzrobbed

So my brother, his gf, my husband, and I just finished binge watching this new Netflix animated show called Aggretsuko. It's a show based on a character who is an anthropomorphic red panda who lives in a world of other anthropomorphic animals (deer, hyena, eagle, hippo, pig, etc.) created by Sanrio (the people behind Hello Kitty!). It seems it would be a simple, easily disposable kids cartoon, but it's not. It's actually made for working adults.

Retsuko, the main character, is a 25 year old Tokyo office worker who is not the best nor the worst at her job. She's just existing and goes through every day annoyances and work issues. When things particularly irk her, she actually goes into scenes where she's imagining herself screaming to rage death metal. Her solace that nobody knows about is renting out a karaoke room and just raging on. The beginning of the show is an introduction and the episodes are only 15-minutes long, but by the end of the 10-episode first season, it became clear that this was a bittersweet insight into real human female workers.

As this article points out, this show from the people who brought us Hello Kitty! is a shockingly insightful portrait of female rage.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/1/17302544/netflix-aggretsuko-show-sanrio-character

But Aggretsuko, the 10-episode animated series that recently arrived on Netflix, surprised me. Aside from its liberal use of profanity and booze, the animated series is impressive for its refreshingly accurate portrayal of working women in Asia — especially their pent-up rage in response to the ways they’re expected to perform in society. The fact that it comes from Sanrio, a company whose most famous character is a mouthless cat so devoid of personality that she can literally be anything, is even more jarring. If Hello Kitty is a blank canvas ready for all manner of brand partnerships, Aggretsuko is her polar opposite: she is the frenzied energy of a Jackson Pollock painting, and it’s comprised only of red and black paint.

Check out the trailer in the article. This show really blew me away in the end at how much I related to her and the other characters. It's seriously one of the best things I've watched. Between this and Steven Universe, I'm seriously finding myself thinking the people behind animated television really understand how to tell relatable character-driven stories about big themes that often get ignored in ways that I have not been impressed with live action shows, even some of the best ones I've seen. I also think they are more in the forefront of having their fingers on the pulse on the type of stories people are really desiring before we ourselves realize we wanted to see those stories. I have a theory on that, but I won't get into that now.

I think we love fiction because fiction is an exaggeration of life so it becomes more true than real life some times, and animated television is an even more exaggerated way of storytelling so it really knows how to hit the notes efficiently and with more emotion.

You can watch it in Japanese with English subtitles, or with English dubbing. I liked watching it in Japanese because I feel like we get the original intent with the line delivery and tone of the dialogue, but I plan on watching it in English because I bet those death metal songs sound great with localized translation and in English.

One really silly spoiler and another more serious one below so don't read it if you plan on watching the show, seriously:

After The Lion King and watching so many nature shows as a kid hearing about how hyenas just stole from other animals' kills, it was nice to see a hyena playing a potential romantic interest. I also think the portrayal of the boyfriend who didn't work out towards the end was a very sensitive portrayal of a character who may have been on the autism spectrum.

I am watching Killing Eve too. I think it is great and really enjoy both (female!) leads. During the season finale, I couldn't help thinking that the actress who played Konstantin's daughter Irina looks like a young Irina Slutskaya.

We've been binge-watching the last season of The Americans. At first, I felt like the season was going slowly and I didn't feel as engaged as I had in seasons past. But things picked up the last couple episodes. Last night, we watched the penultimate episode and I couldn't believe how sad I felt for Elizabeth. After all the things she's done!! Bizarre. Things are ending in a sudden way that I didn't really expect.

It is also weird how my perspective on the show has changed with the changing politics. In 2013 when it started, it felt completely like a period piece, and it felt much more, I don't know, safe in some way, and I could sort of get into the Russian agents just as characters. Now in 2018, after what happened in the 2016 election, there's a renewed sense of threat and the show no longer seems quite as much like fiction, and it's actually quite easy to think of this being reality, or close to it, with all that entails. My perspective on it has changed. It's interesting because I also feel like the anti-American rhetoric of some of the main Russian characters (Claudia, Elizabeth) has definitely increased this season. Enough to be noticeable. I think, though, that has a lot to do with clarifying Elizabeth's character and who she really is.

ETA: Interesting profile of Holly Taylor, who plays Paige.

I've heard really good things about:
So I can't wait to see it! :respec:
i don’t watch that much tv but I just happened to turn it on and be flipping channels when I caught this (Hedy Lamar bio doc). It was pretty good. Most of it I knew already but there was new stuff too as it was pretty thorough. I really enjoyed it.

i don’t know how you define “huge”. British tv reminds me more of the old Hollywood studio system where you’d literally see the same actors over and over again in most movies. So she’s definite someone who works regularly and shows up as a guest star in like everything, but I don’t know if she’s “Joan Crawford” vs like “Agnes Moorehead” or “Ellen Corby” if you know what I mean. She’s somewhat typecast as the high strung “damaged” woman.

The scenes between Irina and Villanelle cracked me up!
Squabbling like the siblings they sort of are!

Good heavens there are surprising twists and turns in this. If I was a shrink I don't know who I'd want to treat more: Villanell or Eve.

Hahaha, I enjoyed that act too! I can't believe she got those cats to actually do tricks. :biggrinbo I LOVED that young band who sang the song that made Mel B. cry. They were SO good. I also enjoyed the card magician (SERIOUSLY, how did he do that?!), the fountain guys made me laugh, and that last group of dancers was incredible. I'm glad Tyra gave them the golden buzzer. The one act that creeped me out was that girl with the doll and she did the magic thing with the paper about the murder.....I have NO idea how she did any of that but it was hella creepy and yet kinda cool.

World of Dance started tonight as well and I really enjoyed this first episode. There are some amazing dancers on this show! That young 16 year old guy was amazing and I loved that salsa duo at the end too. This show is SO much fun to watch and I'm excited to see Eva Igo again at some point (she was the runner up last season). She was my favorite last year! :cheer:

If you have Showtime... DO NOT MISS Patrick Melrose. Stellar acting by all, but especially from Benedict Cumberbatch, who is dazzlingly good (seriously, if he doesn't get an Emmy for this, there's something wrong with the world). Yes, the subject matter can be harrowing (child abuse, drug addiction), but it's riveting stuff, IMO. And I may have teared up a time or two.

Kimmy Schmidt is back! I just finished two episodes, and the writing and comedy is just on fire this season. After talking about Roseanne today, I almost forgot what actual good comedy writing was like for a spell and needed to be reminded.

I binge watched Killing Eve too - in the last three days. Very suspenseful with a lot of funny parts surprisingly. 8 episodes flew by fast!

Enjoying the return of World of Dance. Having watched last year I will try to watch to just enjoy the dances and not worry about the scoring etc. which last year had some questionable judgments at times.

^^ Is Derek still as annoying as he was last year? I had to quit watching cause I couldn't take Derek anymore! :blah: I just watched clips of just the dancing.

I'm watching Billions on the computer now (a friend sends me videos), so I'm not sure if it is airing - but I think it is, as I'm having to wait for the final two episodes.

I wasn't sure I would like this show, but surprisingly am enjoying it very much. The acting is first rate and the relationships are interesting and pretty much the focus of the show, more so than the actual money/trading framework.

Plus, a surprise appearance from John Malkovich playing a Russian oligarch. I haven't seen him in many years! He must be about 75 now, and he's not lost his touch. He's one of my favorite actors of all time. :respec:

After reading glowing reviews of Pose (premier Sunday 9 EDT on FX), I set it up on my DVR. I hope it's as good as the critics think.

75 - really?? He's not even 65 until December and doesn't even look that old imo.
