Just came back from The isle of Dogs which was very enjoyable. It follows many of the typical Anderson's codes in regards with colors, symmetry, dead pan humor, familiar actor's voices ... I'm not a fan of Wes Anderson, I mainly like The Darjeeling Limited (most probably thanks to the presence of Adrien Brody and a fantastic soundtrack) but got annoyed by other of his projects. However, this was quite charming and the animation is just amazing, the details are impressive, some shots are like Japanese print with a clear homage to Hokusai. I could have done without the exchange student character though, extremely irritating. Plus
I'm thinking the japenese students certainly didn't need the help of a blond Ohio teenager to save the day.
Next stop, we've got our ticket for the Avengers on Saturday. I'm ready to have my ears shattered by the decibels as it will undoubtedly be much louder than the isle of dogs :D

Avengers Infinity War = G.O.A.T. and I am going to see it again on Sunday! :cheer2:

P.S.
There is only one post credit scene and it is an important one so don't leave!

Just watched Coming Home, another brilliant collaboration between actress Gong Li and director Zhang Yimou. A subtly (and therefore more powerfully) heartbreaking movie about the personal repercussions of the cultural revolution in China. Li's performance is so perfect. I was going to post that she deserved an Oscar nomination for this performance, but after I reviewed the nominations and winners for the 88th Academy Awards, I think that Coming Home deserved nominations for picture, director, actress, actor (Daoming Chen, playing the husband) and supporting actress (Huiwen Zhang, their daughter). I believe these awards were the year that received the #Oscarssowhite backlash, with all twenty acting nominations going to Caucasians. They definitely screwed up by not nominating all of the people involved with this movie.

I saw Avengers last night. Personally I found it a bit unsatisfying. As with most of the big action movies these days, they just have massive fight scenes for the sake of massive fight scenes with loads of collateral damage. I think they are kind of losing edge because of it.

Having said that, I though Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) was a much more interesting villain and had more dimensions to him than most of the villains in movies these days.

And you need to stay to the very end for the spoiler.

Two girl power movies I enjoyed: The Beguiled and Joy.

I was thinking that I was happy to (finally) LOVE a movie directed by Sofia Coppola, but I checked her filmography at Wikipedia and she directed The Bling Ring and Marie Antoinette, both of which I enjoyed. Lost In Translation was okay, but I didn't enjoy it like everybody else seemed to. The Beguiled is her best though, and the cast (Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst) are brilliant. I was so into the story that when it was over, I found myself missing the characters and wishing this was an ongoing TV show.

Joy was a surprise in that the script was more interesting than I expected and Jennifer Lawrence's performance was actually understated, I expected big fireworks, especially since that's how David O. Russell seems to always want to direct her to do. The rest of the cast went for over-the-top, but it was really nice to see Lawrence make subtle choices so often with her performance.

The Beguiled is her best though, and the cast (Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell, Elle Fanning and Kirsten Dunst) are brilliant.

Is "The Beguiled" the remake of the Clint Eastwood film? The injured civil war soldier and ends up in an all girls school and he learns the lesson of a woman's wrath?

I'm not sure if it was one of the DVD extras, or in an article I read (I think the former), Coppola said that friends of her brought the Eastwood movie to her and thought it would be something to remake. But told from the perspective of the women, rather than of the man. So it was re-written for people to experience the story anew, from this new point of view. Often I'm interested in seeing original versions of films I like, but I fear watching Eastwood's version might make me angry...

I think you would like it. It's been a very long time since I've seen it but I left feeling like he got what he deserved without playing him off as a victim of anything but his own bullshit. If the original film was ever meant to exude sympathy for Eastwood it didn't work on me. He was kind of clueless to what he was setting up. It would be interesting to see it from the lady's viewpoint so I'll have to put The Beguiled on my list.

ETA: I only saw the tv version so I'm sure they edited out a lot. I would be interested to hear your take on the complete version.

15/15 although I really had to think about number 13 because of the colours.

I don't think I've ever gotten all of the questions right on one of these before.

I saw the Eastwood version when I was in my teens, but I've never forgotten it. I don't know if it would make me angry if I watched it again today - but a lot of movies make me angry when I look at them from a feminist perspective.

I'd actually forgotten about 'The Beguiled', so that's for the reminder as I'd like to see it (on Pay per View)

I saw the beguiled. There was lots of eye candy because all the actors were so pretty. I liked the flip where the women were the bad guys. I can’t inagine a movie with Eastwood where Eastwood doesn’t prevail, so I bet the original is different.

Just saw isle of dogs. Very clever and fun. My bf said he liked Anderson’s fox movie better but i didn’t see that one.

12/15, not bad. We saw avengers yesterday. I enjoyed the fact they chose to instill more humor than in the last one which I thought was way too grim. You can feel the Thor Ragnarok and the Guardians of the Galaxy effect. The first half was quite calm with the bigger fights at the end. It was well paced out and not too overwhelming sound wise. There is supposed to be a 4th one right ?

Avengers Infinity War is breaking records for Hollywood movies in India where Hollywood movies traditionally don't do well.
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com...ood-release-in-india/articleshow/63949143.cms

ETA:
Avengers Infinity War is believed to have had the biggest opening weekend of all time with an estimated $250m in North America and $630m WW and that is without China and Russia. So in other words the movie has made back both it's production and advertising budgets in one weekend! Except for Rampage all the movies in the top five preformed above expectations which still includes Black Panther at #5! :cheer2:

How To Be Single was better than I expected. I remember seeing the trailer and it looked like a gross-out comedy with Rebel Wilson at the centre being as gross as she possibly could. But the movie is more about three women figuring out relationships and maybe singlehood. It had more heart than I expected. There's plenty of comedy, but very little of the gross-out-ness the trailer seemed to focus on. Maybe boor-ish people go to movies more often than non-boors, so the movie-makers were trying to trick an audience into seeing what is actually a nice, sweet movie. Dakota Johnson was fine in her role, she's been criticized a lot because of the Fifty Shades movies, but she's the central character here and does a good job being the sweet one amongst some wild and/or neurotic characters. Glad I saw this one. :)

I really enjoyed How to be Single. The other movie in a similar genre that came out around the same time was Sleeping with Other People. Funny Alison Brie was in both of them.

Just got back from Blockers. It was a bit better than I expected. A good mix of comedy and heartwarming parent-child relationship stuff. John Cena was probably the best in this movie, but Leslie Mann was good as well. I think Cena is more than ready to headline a movie on his own. He was even better in Trainwreck, if you saw that in the theatre, check out the DVD extras where his ad-libbing is freaking hilarious. I wonder if Cena will start doing action movies soon. That's what's expected from somebody like him, so it's cool that he's focussed on comedies to show how funny he is instead of just being a muscle dude.

Some new movie trailers:

Hereditary – Horror mystery with Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne and Alex Wolff
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzs9OYdqVbM

I saw a different trailer for this played before A Quiet Place. It was an even better trailer than this one and looks like it's going to be REALLY good. I hope Collette has a monster hit with this.

*** LADY GAGA ALERT****

My friend who works in Marketing over at Warner Bros says that execs think "A Star Is Born" with Gaga and Bradley Cooper is so good that they have reassigned its premier to Oscar campaign Season.

Funny, I was wondering about this movie a while back and checked the release date. At that time, it was set for a May release, so I thought, "good, not too long to wait". Now the release date isn't until October 5th. :(

@PeterG I saw Blockers yesterday too. I really enjoyed it! I won't remember it in a couple of months but it was certainly a really fun ride. Nice for a story to focus on empowered young high school girls and the sex positivity message, and also a focus on female friendship is always nice. The chemistry between the high schoolers was lovely, as was the chemistry between the parents.

I wanted to like the first two movies on this week's list. But both trailers looked like letdowns. If anyone sees either of them, I'd like to know if you recommend the movie or not.
