Ashley Wagner Cheer Thread #3: The Subject of Tonight's Lecture...

My big takeaway from the team Men's SPs were - uh, at least Ashley's ad was cool.
But still not clear what she is doing in Korea. She was mysteriously hyping about sharing from the Opening Ceremonies, but I glanced at her social & didn't see much. And if she's been doing (tape-delayed) stuff for a media outlet, why keep it secret?

Ashley has been sharing in her Instagram stories for the past couple of days that she is in Korea for Team Toyota (this press release was posted on the previous page): http://pressroom.toyota.com/release...+olympic+winter+games+experience+for+fans.htm

"Thin Ice" (YT direct link): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUhRSz4eeow
When you're dancing on thin ice, every jump is a leap of faith. This film follows the story of Team Toyota Athlete Ashley Wagner, a figure skater who overcame the traumatic effects of six concussions to win an Olympic medal. At Toyota, we believe when we are free to move, anything is possible. So we’re on a mission to make movement better for everyone.

Tweeting during film breaks RN. Can we talk about how amazing @Adaripp was?!?! I see him skate like this every day and to watch him just let it happen is so refreshing

Excerpt from the end:
And then? [after SOI tour] "We’ll see!" she says. "I’m training through the summer and I’m going to make up my mind with what I want to do next year, but, definitely headed [for] commentating or something to that degree. I’d love to get involved with the other side of the sport."
Wagner says her "story" is far from over, and certainly didn't end when she didn't make the 2018 Olympic team.
"My career has been through so many ups and downs. Not making this Olympic team was a huge disappointment for me but I like to think that who I am as an athlete and, you know, my struggle is also part of my story," she explains. "And people seeing that, and seeing that you can take something that was just a devastating tragedy and turn it into something so much bigger than what you thought it was gonna be in positive direction, I think that’s really important for people to see."

It’s funny. When Adam made the team and Ashley didn’t one of my thoughts was, wow he will be so busy and how hard for her to go through this alone. And this makes it sound like that’s how it’s kind of playing out.

"Adam is always on his phone, but he never texts back!" divulges Wagner. "I've managed to sneak in a couple of video chats with him so we can talk about his experience — it’s something that’s so cool [but] sometimes you just need someone to vent to and just get it all out there."

True. But if she needs someone to vent to she needs to find some off else this week. Adam is a little busy.

Really, really wish Ashley had been named to Worlds; no point looking back at the OG picks, but Ashley's presence in the public eye - cover of People, new Toyota ad, GMA, etc. - and showing the first marketable personality the sport has had since Kwan IMO (U.S. perspective) could really give post-Games competition a boost in converted casual-to-actual fans.

On a selfish note, that would give her one more meet to perform LLL and if it followed her usual crash-rise-crash-rise pattern, a farewell bronze wouldn't hurt. Even just a typical clean LP (with a < and !) would be more appropriate closure than Nationals.

Well,, form what Im seeing in practice today (NOT COUNTING BRADIE, she on fire) Ashley should be on this team.....

Just dont know why judges gave it to Karen and not Ash when Karen showed no confidence this season or at Nats.....

Sigh... and oh yeah... #NotSorry

Nice video from Ashley. She’s apparently dating a bobsledder.

There was also a rather unflattering interview from Raf basically saying she was lazy about training leading up to nationals. He also made some extremely candid comments about Chen and what went wrong after the Olympics. Wouldn’t surprise me if Chen moves on. Especially if he goes to college. Raf could be down three stars next year.

He didn't say she was lazy. According to the translation, he said she wasn't training well. That could mean lazy or it could mean something else.

Confidence has never been an issue for Ashley...

Ashley totally would have ranked well had she been sent to the Olympics and skated reasonably well. Ashley scored 64+ at Skate America with 2 underrotations in the SP. In the '16-'17 season, she scored 69+ and 70+ at Skate America and WTT respectively with 1 underrotation in the SP. Good call USFSA!

I don't know how she wouldve done at the Os, but the fact they didnt even give her worlds was the extra insult.

I was so tired the other night, I didnt even watch the SP. I woudve drunk a gallon of coffee and been on the edge of my seat for Sashley.

(Considering what a US Ladies uber Ive been for decades, it says something that a Ukrainian-German winning pairs and Canadians winning a 2nd gold in dance were my Os highlight.)

I'm snoopy enough to google who the bobsled dude was. And she follows him on instagram, of course.
