U.S. Ice Dance 2022-23 news & updates

Green/Parsons had a pretty good showing at Skate Canada. Hawayek/Baker are showing they can make a run for the title. Chock/Bates need to get back into the groove because they lost TES to a bunch of teams in Skate Canada, including Green/Parsons (I know competitions aren’t supposed to be compared but we all do it anyway). And I am now a crazy stan of Ian Somerville.

Anybody else has thoughts regarding US ice dance after the first two GP events?
If you add the invalid elements back in that wouldn’t be the case on top of skate America being much more harshly judged.

Ian Somerville is a rockstar and definitely outshines his partner. Hawayek and Baker looked great at SA and showed the greatest confidence and technique I've ever seen.

I think that the days of Chock and Bates using pretty (dragging Madison all over the ice) may be over. While I know judging panels are different at different competitions, C&B's scores are so low, relatively speaking, that other pairs being judged at significantly higher levels, is sending a signal. Evolve or else.
I thought Madison’s skating skills have actually improved.

True. Chock/Bates’ TES would be higher by about 4 points plus/minus some tenths. That being said, Green/Parsons would still have a higher base value by over a point and judges have nothing to do with calls.

I meant harder calling and judging.

As I posted in the U.S. Women's thread, check these start times. I believe these are converted to Pacific.

I don't have the actual schedule for Easterns/Dance Final, but I did check the times for the Pairs, Mids and Pac Coasts against the available schedules with the times in my Peacock - the times listed in Peacock are local for those, so I assumed that the Eastern & Dance times were the same.

NHK is a nightmare as usual. I can force myself to stay up late, at best til 1 AM. I can get up early: anything after 5 is no big deal. But dance is right in the middle so there’s no way I can watch it live. I’m hoping it will still be available in the East Coast morning.

I was actually talking about the Sectionals. I am writing off NHK, no way.
For once, I'm happy to be on the West Coast - NHK I can probably stay up late enough for dance (the Men though...)

What is really sad about NHK is that it is the most stacked of the GP and missing it will be heartbreaking. I may stay up all night.
I don't want to sound like a broken record, but in other parts of the forum (most notably the Peacock discussion thread in TV Alerts), it has been discussed endlessly about free, quick alternative options to be able to watch the Grand Prix on delay should you not stay up all night.

I understand the frustrations with Peacock and not having the most straight-forward method, but there really are other options.

I thoroughly enjoyed both new teams too. I have no idea how all the teams will rank at Nationals. A couple strong teams will finish out of the top ten! I'm so curious how Carreira and Ponomarenko will do this week - fingers crossed for them!

I'm impressed with both of them also, but WASA's Ice Dance team needs to work on glamming Isabella up. She looks much too young to be partnered with him, but they aren't that far apart in age - he's 21 and she's 19. It's mostly just a styling issue with her that they need to fix.

Just finished watching Eastern Sectionals ice dance. I am impressed with the depth of US ice dance. Saw some really nice stuff and these are the lower ranked teams. Z/K were looking very good for not being together long. And F/D were lovely as well. I also liked the team of Koncius/Shcepetov, they skated to the beautiful WE soundtrack.

I would like to see Isabella pave her own way in style as in all else. To me, shes a unique talent and an old soul. I’d like to see her do her over time.

Sorry for the self-indulgent post, but here is my article from a recent interview with Pate and Bye.
You worked hard and dedicate time to your passion. No need to apologize.

Great article, by the way.

Videos of the Top 2 from US Dance Final today

Just finished watching these two videos and while I likes F/D, I think I’m more impressed with Z/K. He’s obviously very good and has been for years but she was a high level freestyle skater until when…spring? That is a pretty amazing transition. She is obviously the weaker of the two, but she has great stretch and she kept up with him well. I also knew the moment they started the program that they were a Shpilband team, the program was very him. I think in a year or two, they could really be amazing. I do think both teams will be giving the other teams in places 6-10 in the US a run for their money!
