I had thought about starting a GSD thread for the ISU's 3rd World Ice Skating Day (decided not to after searching - there were 2 previous threads in the Trash Can for the inaugural edition in 2022 but very few posts). I attended the Holiday Stars On Ice show last night in Kitchener with a bunch of skating friends. I was impressed with the show, and how entertaining it was. Standouts for me were Nam Nguyen (surprisingly, I haven’t seen him skate in a while but he is so personable), Keegan Messing (love him), Elladj Balde who is always amazing, and Jeremy Abbott who skated programs I wouldn’t have expected from him! I didn’t take notes and really don’t remember who skated to what music, but I really enjoyed the show. All the skaters did a great job, and the group numbers were cute. Elvis of course carries the show, and his level of skating at 52 is outstanding. He keeps himself in such good shape. They need his name to sell tickets to the casual fans. Sadly it was not very well attended but we made enough noise in appreciation to make up for all the empty seats. I am not sure that they will be able to keep this tour going much longer, sadly. But I’ll attend as long as I can.

I was there too, with my mom! I had the same thought about Jeremy's first program - I was surprised to see him do something that was so comedic in nature, but he did a great job with it. (For those who haven't seen it, he was kind of a doll/mannequin come to life. He really got into it, and seemed like he was having lots of fun with the physical comedy aspects of the choreo.)

I attended the Holiday Stars On Ice show last night in Kitchener with a bunch of skating friends. I was impressed with the show, and how entertaining it was. Standouts for me were Nam Nguyen (surprisingly, I haven’t seen him skate in a while but he is so personable), Keegan Messing (love him), Elladj Balde who is always amazing, and Jeremy Abbott who skated programs I wouldn’t have expected from him! I didn’t take notes and really don’t remember who skated to what music, but I really enjoyed the show. All the skaters did a great job, and the group numbers were cute. Elvis of course carries the show, and his level of skating at 52 is outstanding. He keeps himself in such good shape. They need his name to sell tickets to the casual fans. Sadly it was not very well attended but we made enough noise in appreciation to make up for all the empty seats. I am not sure that they will be able to keep this tour going much longer, sadly. But I’ll attend as long as I can.

I was there too, with my mom! I had the same thought about Jeremy's first program - I was surprised to see him do something that was so comedic in nature, but he did a great job with it. (For those who haven't seen it, he was kind of a doll/mannequin come to life. He really got into it, and seemed like he was having lots of fun with the physical comedy aspects of the choreo.)

I was at the Winter Ice Show, a small holiday show featuring local skaters at the Wheaton Ice Arena in Maryland. The seats were filled, and many people stood by the boards to watch, including me.

All the skaters were cute and their performances were impressive, but there are two skaters who especially caught my attention:

Zuri Davis (Intermediate and I think she is now 15) skating to a Christmas song - she has speed and nice carriage, and landed a nice 3Lo as her opening jump.

Amelia Campbell (she was intermediate in 2022 and I am not sure which level she is now) - she had some landing problems (no falls) but had a really good expressions.

I googled and found this article about Zuri Davis (dated March 2, 2022):

So when Savary founded Diversify Ice in 2017 to introduce figure skating to youth of color, and started recruiting skaters in Anacostia, a Black neighborhood in southeast D.C., he’d ask residents about skating at the local Dupont Ice Arena. The answer was: “‘We know that ice rink is there, but it’s only open for figure skaters that compete,’” he says. “Some other families right across the street didn’t even know that that was an ice rink.”

Through his foundation, Savary wants to help redefine who and what a skater can be. He provides aspiring skaters of color with mentorship, scholarships and a sense of community. “I’m able to see people that look like me, and be with people that look like me,” says Zuri, who is now a Diversify Ice ambassador with dreams of competing in figure skating at the highest level, like her idol Starr Andrews.

Joel Savary in this article, who is a founder of Diversify Ice, is actually an older brother of Emmanuel Savary, who won the Eastern Sectionals this year (and he will be competing at the 2025 US Nationals).
