And as I mentioned earlier, that score in the FD for N&K was 20 points higher than their score from the Chesapeake Open, which was for the same program only a month earlier with apparently the old scoring system. (While we do see sometimes see around a 10 point improvement between a debut & a follow up skate, that's still a big difference).

We'll get a feel for the new scores eventually. Lake Placid is coming up this week.

Hopefully with enough teams that we will see a range of senior scores. And also with an international judging panel.

I'm going! So excited to see new programs:biggrinbo.
I'm soon jealous.

Don't they have 14 spots. Don't believe L/B will be going to Placid.

Yes, the U.S. has the full 14 spots. It's just that the U.S. has so many fairly-evenly matched teams that some deserving skaters are going to be left out. Last season only 8 teams were sent since many teams got two assignments. Assuming at least Green/Green, Nguyen/Kolesnik, and Gropman/Somerville get two this year, that leaves eight spots for some combination of the following:

teams with previous JGP experience:
Gunter/Wein [J6], Elder/Elder [J11], Amoia/Becker [J10], Lewis/Bye [J3]

teams that were junior last season who have yet to debut on the JGP:
Haines/Kozuta [J7], Efimova/Petrov [J8], DelCamp/Gart [J9]

rising juniors who excelled as novices
Wolfkostin/Zhao [N1], Brown/Brown [N5]

and probably some new teams and others I'm forgetting.

Yes, I agree that at least all these teams are in the hunt. If Lewis & Bye don't skate & earn their usual two spots, then there will be at least 4 berths up front. And--since it's quite plausible some of those teams won't meet the scores/results USFSA requires for a second berth--there could be anywhere between 0-4 afterward. I'm thinking 2-3 would be a likely estimate if this is the scenario. It's even possible that all the teams on the ISP will earn a berth, but if you are going to control your own destiny, you need to be among the first four.

I am trying to save my :wuzrobbed about Lewis & Bye until we actually learn something. And trying not to point out that losing them this season would royally suck. They could fight for medals and play a major role in helping to earn junior dance berths for next year or even fight for that senior spot at SA. Their SB from last season is well above Manta & Johnson's . . . but, yeah, I'm trying to be patient & wait. And, of course, they would need to be ready to compete, and I get that they are that age when you are looking ahead to your future, blah, blah, blah. And I'm hoping no one is injured or retiring or repartnering. But, yes, I'm trying to be patient & wait.:saint:

What happened to Aldridge/Eaton. I thought them refinding each other was supposed to be working out. Is it just that U.S. senior ice dance is so loaded and they had little chance of moving up the ranks?

Seems that they have had relationship problems for sometimes. Probably like getting a divorce, then remarrying thinking that you can do it better the second time only to find out you can't. Just me guessing.

Eliana GROPMAN / Ian SOMERVILLE
Emma GUNTER / Caleb WEIN
Jocelyn HAINES / James KOSZUTA

International Senior RD Thoughts from Lake Placid:

McNamara & Carpenter--Ooh, I like this. (I know, you're shocked;)). But it's the footwork & patterning. Very creative & interesting. You think it's going to go one way, and then it changes direction. I'm really glad I got to see it live because I don't think you will be able to see how it works & travels throughout the rink on camera. They are doing three sets of twizzles in the SD this year, arm position change on the second set. New rotational lift positions, styled for the tango. She had a little bobble at the program's end, just going into the ending pose. I don't recognize the music. Has a very different feel from their tango last year. Weaves between a lightness and intensity throughout. 73.50

The Parsons--Familiar music with familiar occasional voice/talking. I was thinking Assassin's Tango, but I'm not hearing the voice part when I listen to that so something else. (Hopefully someone will identify it, maybe before I finish typing my notes). He was into it at the beginning and then after he Poje-wobbled his twizzles, he was less into it. She's a smiler. They are also back to three twizzle sets in the short. 68.17

Sales & Wamsteeker--Nice, cohesive solid program. Lyrics come in only at the end to help build the excitement. Might have done an uneven number of twizzles on the first set, but I would have to rewatch. (I'm liking that you can choose only one piece of tango music and liking a lot of the programs in which teams chose to do exactly that). 56.23

Lanaghan & Razgulajevs--New, tango-flavored lift right at the beginning. (It's really great!) This is someone's music, but I'm blanking on which team I identify it with. My mother really liked this program. Lanaghan smiles a bit much for my taste. They are growing together as a team and good improvement from last season. 52.59

Monaghan & Fourati--Slow tango. Probably a good choice for them as I believe this is a new partnership. He fell on the twizzles. 42.04

Ichilov & Davidovich--And we have Chicago program #3. (All That Jazz, Cell Block Tango). I've been looking forward to seeing this team because I haven't seen them live before, and I really enjoyed them last season. He's quite tall. She has all the expression. I'd like to see the choreo match the story better, but of course, it's new. She collided with him right before the final lift. It's quite a spectacular rotational lift right at the end. I was kind of impressed that he was getting through it after the collision, but he gave out & dropped her to the ice at the end. I'm looking forward to watching them develop though. 41.43

Reynolds--Another cohesive program. Traditional feel, but kind of a fun way of putting the music together with the movement. Has some good highlights & nice twizzles/turns from him. She looked really nervous (I'm not sure if they have competed internationally before?) but it was a solid debut for them. Their speed is lacking and I'm sure the edges also, but I enjoyed it. 38.41

Takahashi & Altukov--Standard Tango. New partnership. Glad to see them skating early this season and her getting the experience. She seems closer to his age than his partner from last season. 33.61

Great to see so many of the teams choosing one piece of music for the rhythm dance!

International Junior RD Thoughts:

Gunter & Wein-2nd piece is fast & more them. (Their personalities come out). I'd like some more choreographic details to serve as highlights in the program. You've gotta enjoy Caleb when he's having fun. 54.72

Makita & Gunara-Oh, I like them. (New team for me). This is a tango. Intense feel, lots of footwork. I believe the same piece of music all the way through. He performed it really well, and she did a good job too. He botched the first set of twizzles.:( If the FD is as good and clean, might go their way. 50.94

Galiyanova & Lochead-Very nice twizzles. Clean performance. Impressive for a debut together. He is very low on the spin. Her expression reminds me of Kirsten Moore-Towers. 50.54

Amoia & Becker-I somehow missed these two in my note-taking, but I remember thinking they look much more together this season. She got the twizzles. He worked a lot harder at selling the program than last season. Overall nice debut for them. 49.91

Efimova & Petrov-Feel like the program would benefit from more cohesiveness or a stronger point of view. And more of a relationship. At the moment, it seems like she's overselling & he's not selling. 48.73

Fear & Waddell-Standard tango followed by Libertango with an added beat. Think his second set of twizzles was not good, but I would need to watch on replay. 44.65

Bashynska & Beaumont-Carmen. Sigh. Well, it was clean until the twizzles. He was down on a knee on the first set and missed the second set also (not sure if they will call it a fall or not, but probably no levels). Gutsy to put the twizzles at the end of the program but high risk. 43.64

Friend & Badoui-Standard tango, but they've grown a lot from the first time I saw them. I think it is probably good that they have moved back down to juniors for this and can compete with their peers again. 41.40

Katrayan & Derochie-She has expression. They're happy with a solid skate. 37.70

Nguyen & Kolesnik withdrew. Bummer. I knew it was a stretch to expect them after they competed at Skate Detroit last week, but they were on the entry list so I was :biggrinbo to see them. Assume they didn't come, though they were announced for the warmup so must not have officially withdrawn in advance. It's a shame they withdrew at the last minute because I assume, per usual, the top two ranked U.S. junior teams were purposely split between events and Gropman & Somerville could have done the international.

Speaking of which, something must be up with the Greens because I think everyone else competing for the U.S. from team Wheaton is here--complete with a good 7 giant black stuffed puppy dogs (for all the juvenile/intermediate/novice teams) that are going to fill up a sizeable amount of travel space on the way home.

Lots of super close scores here! It's going to be interesting to see how the results come together in the FD.

Note: Galit Chait was the caller. The assistant tech specialist was from Canada, but I missed the name.

The Greens are listed on ISU website as doing the first JGP in Slovakia in August (along with DelCamp & Gart) If its confirmed they are going to Slovakia, perhaps that is why they decided against competing. Its coming up very soon.

I noticed several teams did not compete at LP. Nguyen/Kolesnik withdrew, Not entered: Elders, Wolfkostin/Zhao & Lewis/Bye. Most of these teams already competed at Chesapeake, Texas and/or Detroit so that may be the rationale for not doing LP. Also, Chicago and Utah are coming up.... lots of opportunities to compete nationally and internationally.

Junior RD Thoughts (domestic competition):

Gropman & Somerville. Looks clean in the footwork. Uneven number of twizzles on the first set. Twizzles are right at the end of the program. Rest of the elements looked good. I love them, but I don't really feel like either has the right feel for the tango. She smiled clear through, and he needs more sense of command. Judges liked it. 61.22

Brown & Brown. Well, now I know how they finished third at the Chesapeake Open in the SD. It's a strong program. Two pieces of music but the similarities within the choreo hold it together. Matching leg line & unison were strong. (Looks like they share the same genes;). Tango style footwork and doing their dangdest to make it look like a tango, and I can't tell you how impressive that is because these two are so short. And pulling off a tango with short legs is seriously tough--quite a number of quality short teams have dropped in the standings or lost ground in the tango at this competition. 56.55

Cesanek & Yehorov. All tango feel. Solid for a new team. He's a head taller than her. Have a feeling that explains he new partnership. 55.68

Haines & Koszuta. Standard tango, switches to tango version of Sweet Dreams. (This is seriously the 2nd tango + Sweet Dreams program I have seen here. LOL. Though this one does sound like a tango. Not bad. Cleaner skate than last year. They are also short and, as I said, it's tough. 55.47

Orihara & Royer (CAN). She's selling it. Felt like a tango. Pretty solid for a brand new partnership. Some jostling. He whips her around in the lift. She's quite a bit smaller than him. 53.80

DelCamp & Gart. 3 pieces of music, middle was Libertango. A little rough throughout. (Maybe nerves). Twizzles were off sync through the first two sets. Ambitious program but uncohesive. Think two many music cuts. 50.81

Rose & Michel. Something followed by Maria de Buenos Aires. Black lace dress. Going for "mature." Choreo needs to be sharper and quicker for a tango (though this is probably slow on purpose to help with cleanliness). Missed the twizzles. 46.39

Bratti & Usanov. New partnership. Lacking drama poses;). He's really smiley, a la Tanith. 42.56

Purnell & Purnell. Well, they are looking better. Nice 1 foot position on rotational lift. A more basic level team, slower, and very slow twizzles. She smiled clear through it. Not tango feel in their expression but some nice choreographic highlights in the program. 41.73

Melton & O'Donnell. New team. Just learning. Choreo looked like the tango, but they need the expression to go with it. Probably focusing more on the steps at this point.

Very curious who is going to grab the less obvious U.S. spots on the JGP. Not sure if we're even going to know after this competition. Placements are here, there, & everywhere.

It's possible, but it would be out of character. Wheaton always has teams at the first event (2015-The Parsons, 2016-Gropman & Somerville, 2017-Gropman & Somerville) and they always compete at Lake Placid. This is closer to home for them.

No one is confirmed yet for Slovakia on the USFSA assignment page so we wait & see.

Igor & Camerlengo--now coaching together--obviously elected to do Skate Detroit instead of Lake Placid this year. (It's fine for Nguyen & Kolesnik. They'll be on the JGP). Not sure about the other teams. All the teams in the middle of the pack are swapping placements & scores so I'm very curious how things will turn out.

Did the Green compete both programs at Chesepeake?? if not, they might not skate the first JGP because they need to skate both programs, I think it's 30 days prior to their assignment to show readiness...Didn't see L/B anywhere yet? So ready for first JGP G/S, G/W, A/B, N/V, D/G
