The Dance Hall, Part 4: To Helsinki & Back -- Seeking Rhumba Magic ...

Last few weekends were a treat, with seeing programs for the first time.
I find Latin mostly dismal so far, with few exceptions.
Virtue/Moir- though I think I prefer Prince SD, their Latin is not far off. I think Hotel California section loses a bit of energy, but overall- phenomenal. A program I will rewatch and find new things every time.
OTOH, I did not like "MR", and I tried, rewatching it multiple times. The skills and connection cannot be denied, but I have problems with the concept. It starts strong (though I would cut out all the little Tessa movements in the beginning- they worked for Prince and Latin, and now are getting redundant). "Roxanne", love it or hate it, is a powerful song. But then I feel that both the storytelling and musical quality fizzles. "MR" the original, though it is not my thing, was fresh, eclectic, camp. To take it in all seriousness with very mediocre music and the storyline going basically from "Roxanne" to the heroine's death rings hollow to me. Maybe if they revamp the middle and make the "love story" stronger, I'll buy into it. The choreo for the last minute is effective (and illustrative), but middle is lacking. And I do not know if they can get the full effect with the music they have.
Gilles/Poirier. I just love them. They won me over throughout the years for being so different (and good enough to be different!). Hope they skate another Olympic cycle. I was smiling all throughout their SD. Maybe my favorite.
W/P. I've loved them for years. I hope to be wrong, but I think they went the wrong way. Their all-out sincerity and originality always stood out. I loved their Phantom, MR, Malade, Seasons. But "Spartacus" just brings Domnina/Shabalin to mind, and they did it better. "Spartacus" is balletic and mainstream; I think it does not play into W/P's strength. They are the ones who need to repeat MR. I hope to be wrong, but I worry.
I find Bobrova/Soloviev's SD unwatchable (literally. I started like 4 times and could not get past the first minute. Finally watched it and the dance misses musical accents and feels like such a chore for everybody), and their FD really strong, the one I look forward to rewatching over and over. If Zhulin wants them to be relevant, he better rework that SD, because the FD is competitive with the best.
Love H/D's FD. As for SD- I want to see how it develops; it could be stronger musically. It is all built on rhythm, but then H/D are such strong personalities and skaters, they can compensate. The more they play it to the rafters, the more it'll shine.

Wow, Coomes/Buckland's SD is great. Best choreography for a SD so far, and by far too. The transitions into the different music are really smooth, well edited, the skating is energetic anc classy. I think Christopher Dean did this, they used music of his rhumba with Jane, and he was next to them in the K'n'C.

Penny bubbled a little on the twizzle and their rhumba pattern was somehow a little weird with the height difference but I loved it! Great to see them back and in good shape too. (Personnal best for them with 71 points, btw.)

Now that I've rewatched, I confirm all my first impressions :D

Seemed a bit dated, using the same music as Torvill and Dean might have been more interesting with a stronger team. But she looked so thrilled to be back skating so that was great to see.

I loved it!
It was very classy I thought.Loved the costume dress but sorry don't like her hair.
The music edit was great it seemed like one whole and you didn't notice the elements. She must of worked so hard to recover from the injury.Welcome back Penny and Nick :)

Because otherwise, we wouldn't know they were dancing to Latin other than the music they've chosen (for most teams).

good point, unfortunately it removes the flow of the step seq, I really loved the no touch step seq of V/M last season, but this season it does not look so spectacular because of that stop, IMO.

I’m glad we talked about the rhumba pattern. Adding a few level 4s to the list. New additions in bold.

Torn & Partanen-Nebelhorn Trophy
Virtue & Moir-Autumn Classic
Bobrova & Soloviev-Ondrej Nepela
Hubbell & Donohue-U.S. Classic

McNamara & Carpenter-Lake Placid International

Coomes/Buckland's SD really reminded me of T/D's 1994 Rhumba OD in parts and in flavor, with a bit of Daisuke Takahashi 2010-2011 SP music edit, which is why I think it works well. It's a coherent dance that knows what it is.

I honestly think Muramoto/Reed have my favorite SD that I've seen so far, but I wonder how much of that is just me loving Kana Muramoto and how she ice dances.

Same, I totally ignore to Chris , she is a star.

Yeah, but almost every other team last season who chose hip hop had a pretty hard time incorporating the kind of body movement & sharp accents the music/genre required while still getting the levels, so I'm not surprised that this year the teams were given a chance to stand around & wiggle their hips a bit and be like "hey look, we're doing Latin! chico chico!" in the middle of that st sq (because, y'know, another genre of music that calls for the kind of body movement that's super duper hard to combine with going-for-level4 no touch footwork, if you're not V/M)

The music edit was great, but this was so difficult for me to watch because I associate that music so strongly with T/D. I kept remembering T/D's movements so much that it distracted me from what C/B were doing. I really wish they had picked different music.

okay I am calling bullshit on this sudden requirement that Latin SDs be classy. Wonder where that came from

And if the Shibutani's were skating that SD exactly with the look and movement as C/B I know for a fact one of you would be saying it was boring as fcuk.

Not me. :saint:

Just watched Min/Gamelin....that whole program needs to be re-thought. Whatever one's feelings are about Despacito (at least it's not the Justin Bieber version), it's a bad idea to use and then abruptly cut it off before it really gets going. The music edit and construction doesn't build at all, the choices are disjointed, and it comes off as a very generic Latin SD where elements came before construction and choreography.

Is that a serious question?

Yes? I saw some people liking SDs because in their opinion they looked classy, but those are just opinions, so I'm not sure what you're calling bullshit on. Maybe I'm reading too fast.

Well the ones I have in mind know so I will leave it there.

I was thinking exactly the same, I like the song and I think they could take advantage of its popularity but they used it wrong, and totally wrong use it for the pattern :duh: :wall:. They need fix it. But yes, I'm grateful that they did not use the Bieber version.

Well as I'm fairly new to Ice Dance (P/C brought me to Figure Skating as a viewer in 2015), I'm still discovering T/D work. Lucky me ! #OrNot
I've been trying to learn more about Ice dance since then (and the different thread here helped a lot!) but I remember it was hard for me to get into the past ice dancing. (I remember mostly the program of the 2014 Olympics, not the things I was prepared to see xD). Now that I'm more knowledgable (a little more) I can post easily around here.

It's not a requirement. Just like the "all in your face" type of program is not a requirement either, even for latin. But what was classy was the skating, the program was more easy on the eyes if you prefer this phrasing ;)
