And IIRC Skate Canada bought itself a mess when they tried holding Soucisse/Firus for ransom. Screwing with the reigning Olympic champion’s choice of a partner and with IAM would have been a lot messier. They let the Duchenays go all those years ago, clearly they understand that sometimes you give and sometimes (Piper, Weaver, Messing) you get.

Some time ago I browsed 15-20 year old figure skating discussions (not on FSU) and I was pretty shocked how venomous some people were. Like flat out calling skaters fat cows or talentless hags. And nobody reacted to that. So at least when it comes to social media, 'good old times when people had manners' never existed.

Yes. Plus they also got Romain LeGac from France and Nadiia Bashynska's new partner Noe Perron is from France.

I think if they said that, Guilluame would have shown up 5 minutes later with a release from France and Canadian citizenship to compete 2025-2026 for Canada.
 
Not indefinitely, but unless they have contractual guidelines, they could have killed him with bureaucracy and/or asked for a huge ransom, which could have gotten both Feds off the hook. Those negotiations could have been dragged out.

And what if he had? Skate Canada should be dismantled if all of this was about protecting G/P. They should haven jumping through hoops thinking the same thing as the French Fed, a possible gold handed to them.

They would have needed to make one statement and repeated it ad nauseum: FB is free to skate with whomever she chooses. Her personal life is not the issue. Plus a mention of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, et voila.
 
There has to have been a reason that FB/C wanted to skate for France, though. It meant that Laurence had to get French Citizenship, which ended up not being difficult but still. They needed a lot of cooperation from the Canadian fed to make it happen. If skating for Canada would have been trivially easy, why did they skate for France?

I think it was Guillaume's first choice to skate for France so they asked Canada for a release first.

Skate Canada wanted to be away from the hassle of Sorenson and the mess/pushback of having G/C compete for Canada so said yes.

If they skated for Canada I imagine there would be many more competitive hoops to jump through re: competing at the National level through qualifying in regional and sectional comps too.

Plus French Fed was probably super supportive of the team and Canada would not be because of G/P's position and the mess of Sorenson so why do that unless no other choice.
 
How much money is there? I can see Cizeron preferring to skate for France, and Laurence has already skated for different countries so what’s another?

Like, I kinda hate that the main reason Skate Canada would be is to protect Gilles and Poirier, whom I like a lot. And it wasn’t even working most of the season! Would it have worked if the Brits didn’t make such a clear error? There has to be other reasons! Not to demean G&P, but not they’re not exactly Patrick Chan or Virtue & Moir.

Has Skate Canada not released a skater or delayed it? I think they have but the name escapes me. Was it Vanessa Crone? Maybe Skate Canada doesn’t like to play those games. It’s a reason that makes more sense to me, I can still act morally superior but not that much, and I can still wuzrob Gilles and Poirier.

Perhaps Guillaume knows Skate Canada is bad at politking and didn't want to skate for Canada. :lol:

Seriously though, he probably realized early on that he'd rather have the full support of France than divided loyalties and attention from Skate Canada. You can hardly blame him there.

I think there would have been another reason: to keep Fournier-Beaudry out of the spotlight and send a signal to skating partners and coaches to refrain from portraying those accused of rape as victims.

I find the justifications advanced by some here unpersuasive.
