The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

Can we talk about Smolkin's Italian pasta-gate?
What were people claiming they'd said?

Related to D/S, clicking through to their instagram showed me this post by Diana describing the exact situation with her hearing, which was interesting. Explains how it doesn't affect her ability to hear music as a dancer, but affects her ability to comprehend speech, making it understandable that she avoids interviews, and is certainly not something just exaggerated for attention, as some people have implied.

Lajoie/Lagha have Romain Haguenauer listed as a former coach in their ISU bio. I found that interesting. He has been with them in the KnC since their junior days. Maybe it means they won't be working with him anymore in the future, even though they are staying with IAM?
I could see them moving into the space C/B now hold (Patrice primary coach) when C/B retire.

It seems like it was the opposite. She downplayed it for a long time to avoid attention.

I for one made my comment because there was some truth to it, and I ain’t gonna stop for a tone police officer minimizing Papadakis’ experiences by equating a few light roasting comments to something that caused her actual psychological damage that motivated her to end the near lifelong partnership on bad bad terms and write a whole book discussing her trauma.

Mildly joking about Cizeron's narcissism has been a thing for many years, even when he was winning everything under the sun with Papadakis. I see no problem with the jokes this week in that regard as they're just continuing in the same, lighthearted vein, even if the tentacle of truth contained in it upsets some.

That's a great development IMO. And I do think giving the BS choreo elements so much weight actually helped produce the result here tbh. I know it was done to boost entertaining teams with comparably weaker skating skills like F/G, Smart/Dieck, Chock/Bates etc., but in practical terms it created a situation where the more hardcore technical elements and at least smaller mistakes in more technical elements could be overcome with maxing out GOE on the choreo stuff. Chock/Bates arguably profited from this structure a number of times and FB/C also overcame the wobble in the twizzles with massive GOE in these elements, as I understand. Live by the BS choreo element, die by the BS choreo element.

At the moment, the system has these vague vibes elements making up an IMO disproportionate amount of the technical score.

Looking back after the Olympics, I still wonder what on earth Skate Canada was thinking when it granted Fournier-Beaudry a release.

On the bare results, Skate Canada did itself out of a silver medal in Ice Dancing and possibly fourth place in the Team Event. There also seems to have been some blowback on the prospects of Lajoie & Lagha, who finished seventh at Worlds last year.

With all this stress with the dance and men’s events, we are DEFINITELY going to need a toilet thread, or something similar, at season's end.

Releasing her was the lesser of two evils.

Pretty sure Guillaume has Canadian citizenship and they could have competed for Canada if they don’t release her to France (assuming France released him and they probably would.)

Piper and Paul would have been Canada team # 2 then and pushed off the Olympic podium in favour of LFB/GC.

Plus Skate Canada most likely wanted no part of any association to Sorensen.

It's not just Skate Canada that had to release her, but both Skate Canada and the COC had to agree to let the IOC override the requirement that country switches could only happen if the participant(s) hadn't participated in ISU championships for the former country in the last three years, which she had. This is part of the Olympic Charter.

We assume Guillaume has Canadian Citizenship, correct? He's never said, but based on the time he's been in Canada, the fact that there was a point where Gabby couldn't leave Canada since she wasn't a permanent resident, but Gui could, and statements he's made about Canada being his home, people believe it to be likely?

Most IAM teams are not Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents but they all competed at 21 Worlds. Why would Gaby’s situation be any different in terms of returning?

I don't know, because I'm not the person who originally made this point. I am summarizing what people currently seem to believe.

Yes. 👍

She said she didn’t have the same Visa as Guillaume (he had PR) so was afraid she wouldn’t be allowed back into Canada and this is why they didn’t compete the GPs in Fall 2020.

I thought it was why they didn’t do worlds 2021 but someone else said no it was GPs.

Cizeron had Permanent Resident status and could come and go when Papadakis couldn't. He supposedly had applied for Citizenship before the pandemic, during which time there was a big backlog.

I checked Federal processing times a few years ago, and they were back around two years, but Quebec has its own citizenship process. Still, if he did apply before the pandemic started, he should have had citizenship by the time they teamed up, or, checking status, it was in sight.
