The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

I'd like good programs. Is that too much to ask for?

I know people are blaming IAM regarding the judging, but what I’m truly blaming IAM for is the complete monotony of programs the last few years. They all seem like rehashes of each other. One or two might pop out, but it’s all just felt so generic. The most interesting programs are coming out from new choreographers like Jean Luc or smaller schools that don’t have to think about 30 different free dances.

I’ve seen people say that they’re just impeccable at packaging and programs, and sure to some extent, but most of their teams blend together for me or just rehash the same style year after year.

Okay. Are we seriously going to bag the programs coming out of IAM and then hold up Jean Luc as new choreographer bringing something new to this world because

I forgot about the Browns and now I recall saying I wish LaLa had that FD

So I guess I like two FDs right now but only one of them is going to the Olympics ( FB/C).

I've never felt that way...

Same could be said of the “elderly” Chock/Bates but it appears they get to play by a different set of rules. Any other team with her shallow edges and their slow speed would get hammered but not them.

Seems to me like several teams at this GP Final have been accused of having shallow edges by at least one partner, and they don't seem to be getting hammered...

I don't think Chock and Bates should be getting away with it, either, but lets not pretend that every other dancer in the GPF is some brilliant technician and Chock is the only one getting away with it. If the 6 teams where both partners were the most technically skilled were at the GPF, I think several of these teams would be at home.

Both teams have benefited from the lack of focus on RD patterns (what would happen if F/G had to do a waltz?)
Fear and Gibson had an exhibition program which was a waltz a few years ago. Not the same as a competition program obviously but it was nice and they handled it just fine. They also would have had to pass all their compulsory dances under the UK system, and that includes a number of waltzes. Anyway, my point is that if there was a Rhythm dance with a waltz pattern they'd still do okay, even if it's not their usual wheelhouse.

Another skater who might be seen to benefit from lack of patterns is Olivia Smart, but she was saying on her youtube how she wishes they would come back, because she feels like she missed out on getting to do them, and really wants to! They might be difficult, but lots of ice dancers... like dancing and want to experience it??? shocking i know

You know, with all the complaints that certain senior teams are getting generous calls and GOEs, maybe the calling at Skate America and Finlandia that everyone complained about and that was being investigated (at least Finlandia) was actually more accurate than usual.

It may very well have been. The problem was the suddenness of it. If skaters are doing some things poorly, call them on it consistently, don't pamper them and then pull the rug out from under them.

I can see the announcement now.
We have been very lax about enforcing the rules for Ice Dancing. We apologize.

Given the short turnaround time between this announcement and certain upcoming competitions, we will continue to be lax until 1 January 2026, when we get strict. Prepare yourselves.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Wishful thinking...which has already been discussed a million times.

Make the RD back into the Short Dance - with the focus on tech. Then the Free Dance, can be 'free'. Take the RD back to a SD/CD format similar to the years with two required pattern dance sections. Still have five elements - 2 patterns, twizzles, lift, and one Partial Step Seq - rotate each year one in hold/no touch. Drop the choreo step nonsense.

For the Free Dance - add back a leveled lift. Drop the two of THREE choreo elements.

Zach would make an awesome Michael Corleone!

This. Also, dump "a sliding element" or "a character step sequence" as possible choreo element choices.

I like these ideas. If the IDTC is so in love with their choreo "elements" maybe an alternative could be to have one choreo sequence in the FD similar to what the single and pair skaters are doing. I would also add that the GOE for the choreo elements need to be reduced significantly.

As long as they don't do Compulsory Dances to "I'm Too Sexy," I think that I will be okay with almost any changes.
